Our Christmas Goose
On a cold morning that December, my brother Rick and I were sent to Uncle Tommie’s on the other side of Little Mountain to get a goose for Christmas dinner. This long journey over the mountain was hard but worth it.
That morning, dark clouds were coming together overhead. I knew it was going to snow on the 1 .
When we arrived, Uncle Tommie was already waiting for us. “Boys, I’m not 2 you off,” he said, “but the wind is picking up. You’d better get the goose and head for home soon.”
After a quick thank you and goodbye, I took the goose and we left. Halfway up the mountain, it began to snow heavily. I held the goose 3 to me.
By the time we reached the top of the mountain, it snowed more heavily. And the wind seemed to blow straight through my coat. I stepped in front of Rick. “You must be cold. Open your coat!”
“Are you crazy ” Rick asked. “I’ll lose what little warmth I have!” When he saw I was 4 , he slowly opened his coat.
I placed the warm goose inside his coat. Rick sighed happily(舒了口气). My plan was 5 .
On the way down, I started to shiver(发抖). Rick said, “Dave, it’s your turn now.”
He passed me the goose. For a long moment, I just stood and 6 my freezing(冰冷的) hands on his body. We passed the goose back and forth(来回地) between us all the way. Finally, we got home.
Sitting at the table, we explained how the goose kept us from freezing. “We can’t have him for dinner! This goose helped 7 our lives,” I said.
Later, we named the goose Charley and he lived out his life in the yard, bossing around the chickens and another goose we bought to keep him company. A life as the most important bird was fitting for our 8 .

At the end of my first year of high school, I realized I needed to find a summer job. I was tired of having to ask my parents for 1 . I wanted to go to the shopping center or movies with friends without having to ask for $20 from my parents. I imagined having a job at a store or at a summer camp where I could play games with children. But what actually happened was 2 . The only job I managed to find was cleaning up tables at a local restaurant.

Run for Class President
Two months ago, when our class election(选举)started, I decided to run for class president. I enjoyed speaking in public and got along well with people, so I felt it easy to win. But I was 1 that people would feel bad for me if I lost.
I was busy preparing in the following week. My plan wasn’t to make promises to do things I couldn’t 2 but to show my class why I wanted to be president. Since I was 3 prepared, I felt that my chances of winning were strong.
However, when I gave my speech on Election Day, the response(反应)wasn’t what I had 4 . Few people actually listened. When it was my opponent’s(对手的) turn, everyone was screaming his name. His speech was short, but all to the point. By then, I realized I should have made mine shorter and clearer.
It was obvious who would 5 . For the rest of the day, I felt like it was over. I wanted to just go home and cry, but I made it through.
My 6 was right: I didn’t win.
The next day, people were still talking about the election. I just pretended(假装)not to hear. But later, things got better. People 7 about the election and talked to me just as they did before.
I don’t regret putting time and energy into the election because I’ve learned that things aren’t always going the way I expect. And moments of failure like this build 8 —since then I’ve learned to face disappointment and grown stronger.

A Winter Meal for the Poor
I’ve never thought that a fundraiser (募捐活动) could have had such a huge influence on my life. Back in the 5th grade, there was a fundraiser at school and each class would get a 1 to fill up with small change. To make my class come to the first place in the fundraiser, I took two fifty dollar bills 2 to school and put them into the box.
Two weeks later, my parents asked me about the money. They said they had 3 the truth but they weren’t angry. In order to make up for it, I must do something.
My mum had the perfect idea in mind. The day after Christmas, she took me to St. John’s Hospice (收容所) and 4 that we were going to be working in the kitchen for several hours, making meals for the homeless men that came in each day.
As the lunch began, I thought I could wait for this by playing with my new toys. But as the mealtime went on, I found these men were overjoyed at the 5 food they were receiving, which I couldn’t believe. I considered it a very common winter meal. The men’s faces lit up with the food they were given. I realized how poor some people in this world actually are.
I had always heard about giving to the poor, but I never fully 6 it until that day. It was enlightening to see how thankful they were for something I thought was cheap. I learned that I didn’t really need all the good and expensive things I hoped for. On the drive home, my mum 7 Mc Donald’s for lunch and I answered no at once. I knew that I didn’t need it.
That day I came to know how good the feeling is to help people who are really in need. I now return to St. John’s Hospice every year, trying to help the poor. This is why I am becoming a doctor, thinking that in the future I will make a 8 in people’s lives in a way just like my mother did on that December 26th.

The Race of the Robots
The robotics competition was taking place. Lily and Toby followed their two other teammates, David and Marcus, into the big hall. They laid out all their equipment on the table because the rules said the robot could not be assembled (组装)before the competition. They needed to build and program a robot that could make its way around an obstacle(障碍)course. It was said that judges often gave a surprise 1 change that would require the students to change their robotic design at the last minute.
“Teams, it is now time for the new rule,” the host announced. “Some rocks will be placed on the course. You will have to make your robot remove them from the course.”
“We can build an arm to pick up the rocks and 2 them on the side,” said David right away. “But that would take too much time,” Marcus replied.
The team stood in 3 ,each trying to think up new ideas. Toby thought hard about the design they had already planned out. Then he realized something special about their design—the secret box.
“How about we create a door in the front of the 4 space in the center of the robot We can add a sensor (传感器)to the door. So when our robot goes along and comes across those rocks, it will open the door and pick them up,” he explained.
The team thought about it.“Actually, that might work. The fact that the robot is 5 these things rather than just moving them might give us extra points,” Lily said.
The four set to work, 6 but quickly assembling their pre designed robot, then adding the door with the extra parts they had brought. It was hard, and time was running out. As the buzzer (计时器)rang, Toby placed the last part on the robot.
It was time for Toby’s team to compete. They set their robot on the course and watched it make its way and meet the first rock. It stopped for a second, and the members of the team 7 their breath. Then the machine opened its door and slid (滑行)across the small rock. When it passed over the rock, the rock disappeared— 8 in the robot’s secret box. The team cheered, knowing they were one step closer to the championship.

The next day, Hannah sees a woman sitting on the grass with her baby boy. The little boy is trying to stand.“Good boy, Michael,”his mother says.“Stand up now.”Michael stands up slowly. He takes one little step and falls down.“Don’t cry. Try again,”his mother says. Michael stops crying. He takes his mother’s hand, and stands up again. Hannah 6 them for five minutes.“He doesn’t stop falling. But it doesn’t matter,”Hannah thinks.
One Saturday afternoon, Hannah goes to the skatepark with Justin. At the skatepark, Justin says,“Everybody falls off sometimes.”“Sure, how do you do that trick I want to 7 it.”“Put your right foot here, and then push with your left foot.”“OK,”Hannah says,“I need some more practice.”“You’re a(n) 8 skateboarder now, Hannah,”Justin tells her quietly.

When Joseph handed Ms. Taylor his homework, he couldn’t have imagined how writing a short story would help him get more than a grade.
Joseph, who was 1 , had few close friends. In his art class, students usually discussed modern painters and skills of mixing paint. He kept quiet. No one except Karen seemed to 2 him at all. So Joseph wanted to invite Karen to see the Jackson Pollock painting exhibit at the local museum. Every time he had an opportunity to invite her, he’d start by talking about his own painting. He knew his 3 was not as good as Karen’s—she was a natural artist—but he wasn’t sure where else to begin. He never got to the invitation before the bell rang.
But things suddenly changed when Joseph received an A+ on his story about a boy trying to ask a friend to an art opening. He was amazed. He knew that writing was fun and came 4 to him, but he didn’t realize he was good at it.
Ms. Taylor’s comments made him think he had a special talent, kind of like Karen’s for painting. Ms. Taylor 5 him to enter an upcoming national writing contest (比赛). It was January 2021. My second term in high school had just ended. Two weeks earlier, my parents checked my grades and 1 more than 20 missing tasks.
Bright and able as I was, I had often struggled(挣扎)with 2 and procrastination(拖延), especially with writing tasks. But this time was different, and the pandemic(疫情)was to blame. I was doing my first year partly from home—where I did my schoolwork on my own time, and, for the most part, without teachers’ guidance.
The 3 was too much. I could do a million other things rather than my homework. I told my mom what I was missing from my teachers and classmates,“When a teacher walks around the classroom, you want to be on task, and you don’t want to fall behind the other students.”
My parents tried to help, but their 4 fell far short of their expectations. Tired from working long days, they criticized rather than advised. Late night learning hours ended in 5 matches. All three of us were upset and stressed out.
We knew we couldn’t solve this alone. So when my mom heard that Steve Merrill, an experienced teacher, could help, she 6 out.
Mr. Merrill told me that his students also had problems in the same areas: task organization and time management. He taught me to break down big tasks into small ones. We met twice a week, over video, where we could look over my tasks and put the skill into practice. After a few months, I started to see positive results. My grades were improving. My work habits were becoming more regular. There were 7 late night learning hours and fights.
The other evening I came downstairs to ask my parents for help with a writing task. There was something different. I had 8 most of it two days before the deadline! While I don’t expect this school year to be easy, I now have some of the tools I need to help me through it.

My father had a car accident and left us. My mother suddenly found herself alone to care for five boys. I 1 about the situation, but my mother didn’t, and she assured us that she would keep us together as a family and safe from harm. Although small in size, she could handle heavy horse drawn plows. Besides, she even found time to help us with homework.

One day, my mother took a saw into the forest and 3 with some tree branches. She left them in the barn and didn’t tell her curious children what they were for. She worked on her project while I was in school, but I looked 4 into the barn when I had a chance. Several days later, I still couldn’t figure out her purpose. When later I saw she used nails and paint, I concluded that she must be making presents.
By Christmas week, my mother was happy again as usual. Her 5 was apparently(显然地) completed and she obviously kept it secret because I’d looked everywhere without success.
On Christmas Eve, I lay awake for a long time, 6 Christmas morning.
The next morning, my mother handed out the handmade presents happily in front of her delighted kids.

Grow in high school
High school is a time to find out who you are, what you’re good at, and what you hope yourself to be in the future.
Last year, I found myself lost in Algebra(代数). I truly didn’t find math the least bit 1 , so I gave up trying. Most of the homework tasks and tests were big trouble to me and I would get so upset that I could not get the topic. I ended that year with a D.I knew I could do better and that grade did not represent me, so I signed up for our school 2 for students who were behind in their studies, like me. It was a 4 week program, and I was ready for a 3 . I also asked my math teacher, Mr. Shuster, for more help. I needed his guidance to help me better understand the materials. I knew that with belief in myself, I would become 4 . Finally I turned my D to a B in the following exam. This experience made me realize that no matter how hard something is that you’re going through, there’s always a way around it with hard work.
Albert Einstein didn’t 5 speaking until he was four, reading until he was seven, and was thought to be mentally ill! He went on to win a Nobel Prize(诺贝尔奖). Did I let them push me down or did I overcome them Once these blind points are recovered, you can act on them and 7 . If you can build on your failures, you can use them as a stepping stone. Here was the task. We were divided into groups of 1 . One person stood on one side of the gym, and the other three stood across from him or her. We had to get a baby doll across the gym floor to the fourth member on the other side. But we couldn’t just walk across the gym floor because we had to pretend(假装) the floor was full of crocodiles. And the baby doll couldn’t be dropped on the floor because we were supposed to pretend it was our most beloved baby. If the fourth member 2 to catch the baby doll, the team would not get any grades.

I announced, “While all the crocodiles are busy 5 me, my team members could take all the baby dolls across the gym floor, and at the same time, all baby dolls will be safe and 6 .”
Mr. Dover was shocked. “Jamie, you are going to let the crocodiles eat you Doesn’t that mean you fail ”

Mr. Dover smiled. He said to the whole class, “She is right. The only solution to this task is for one member to 8 up everything for the rest of you. You got it, Jamie! And all of you will get A plus!”

A Winter Meal for the Poor
