Tossing empty water bottles into the Grand Canyon National Park is just the kind of thing people hate to see,but it happens all the time.About a third of the trash is empty plastic water bottles. As a result, the park began the process of banning the use of these bottles in the Grand Canyon.Just as the ban had nearly made its way through the long process to become a regulation, the head of the National Park Service(NPS) suddenly put the ban on hold so that “more information could be gathered”.
According to an article in The New York Times, this sudden thirst for information came from Jon Jarvis, the top federal parks official, after he talked with Coca-Cola that had donated more than $13 million to the NPS.Coca-Cola makes bottled (in plastic) water. The sudden rejection of the ban came after over $300,000 had already been spent setting up free facilities for filling refillable water bottles.
A spokeswoman for Coca-Cola Refreshments USA,Susan Stribling, said the company would rather help address the plastic litter problem by increasing the availability of recycling programs.“Banning anything is never the right answer,”she said.“If you do that, you don’t necessarily address the problem.”She also characterized the bottle ban as limiting personal choice.“You’re not allowing people to decide what they want to eat and drink and consume,”she said.
The NPS is always underfunded by the government. The NPS,therefore, has from the beginning sought donations from the public and from groups, including profit businesses whose interests might not match the mission for which the Service was created back in 1916.
This is another example of private concerns trumping public ones.Is it an unavoidable result of using private donations to make up for government funding shortfalls?

B.has donated a lot of money to the NPS
C.set up free facilities in the national park for filling refillable water bottles

3. What does the underlined word “trumping” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Expressing. B.Defeating.
C.Explaining. D.Obeying.
4. What does the writer think of putting the ban on hold?
A.It is a wise decision.
B.Officials should give a detailed explanation.
C.It is disappointing.
D.Officials don’t have the right to do so.

About 97% of the world’s water is salty and is found in our oceans and seas. But,as we can’t drink seawater, how can it be important?
Every part of our seas and oceans contains an amazing number of animals and fish that live at different ocean depths. Most of the different species of animals and fish depend on simple plants for their food. These simple plants called algae(海藻) drift near the surface of the ocean and use sunlight to turn carbon dioxide and water into food and oxygen. In fact, algae produce over half of the oxygen people breathe. How important seawater is!
Each plant or animal in our seas and oceans is an important link in a food chain. The algae are eaten in large amounts by microscopic animals, which are in turn consumed by larger animals. These food chains are delicately balanced.
The bad news about the food chains in the oceans is that they are under threat because of man.People once thought that the oceans were so big that it didn’t matter if we dumped rubbish into them or caught huge quantities of fish and whales for food. But we now know this is not true and fish stocks in the oceans have started to drop.
Thankfully, the world is taking steps to protect the future of our oceans by introducing international agreements to protect marine habitats. Most countries have introduced fishing restrictions to protect fish stocks in the oceans and new techniques are being pioneered to cope with pollution. Finally, the importance of protecting oceans is being made known to more people. This is just the beginning of a long process to protect the oceans for our future. We depend on the oceans for fish which are an important part of the human diet. How important seawater is!
5. Which of the following is the proper order of the food chain?
A.small animals→algae→microscopic animals→large animals→man
B.algae→microscopic animals→large animals→larger animals→man
C.small animals→algae→large animals→microscopic animals→man
D.microscopic animals→algae→large animals →larger animals→man
6. People used to think that the rubbish thrown into the sea ________.
A.wouldn’t harm the fish in the sea
B.would change the balance of the food chain
C.would be broken down in the sea
D.wouldn’t do much harm to the sea
7. From the passage,we learn that ________.
A.most fish and sea animals live at the surface of the seas
B.it is very difficult to break the balance of a food chain
C.excessive fishing has caused the decrease in fish stocks
D.it won’t be long before the problems concerning oceans will be solved
8. Which of the following is NOT a way being used to protect oceans?
A.The use of international agreements.
B.Forbidding fishing to protect fish stocks.

Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. Our cultural and natural heritage are both irreplaceable (无可取代的) sources of life and inspiration.Places as unique and diverse as the wilds of East Africa’s Serengeti, the Pyramids of Egypt, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Baroque cathedrals (大教堂) of Latin America make up our world’s heritage.
What makes the concept of World Heritage exceptional is its universal application.World Heritage sites belong to all the people of the world, regardless of the territory on which they are located.
The United Nations Educational,Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to encourage the identification, protection and preservation of cultural and natural heritage around the world considered to be of outstanding value to humanity. This is embodied in an international treaty called the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted by UNESCO in 1972.

help States Parties safeguard World Heritage properties by providing technical assistance and professional training;
provide emergency assistance for World Heritage sites in immediate danger;support States Parties’ public awareness-building activities for World Heritage conservation;
encourage participation of the local population in the preservation of their cultural and natural heritage;

Does a good mood help when doing your job?Happy thoughts can stimulate creativity, but for common work such as reading a dull textbook, being sad may work better.Stress, anxiety, and a bad mood are notorious for narrowing people’s attention and making them both think and see only what’s right in front of them.
But whether a good mood also expands people’s attention to visual details was unknown. To answer that question, psychologist Adam Anderson of the University of Toronto asked 24 university students to take two kinds of tests after listening to sad, happy,or neutral music. In one test, the students were asked to think of unusual words, thus testing them for the breadth of their thinking. As previously reported by various other researchers, those who have listened to the happy music—and who claimed to be in a better mood—were more successful in recalling unusual words than the other two groups.
In the second test, students were presented with a row of three letters and asked to ignore everything except for the letter in the middle. This measured the breadth of their visual attention and ability to focus on what was in front of them. This time, the happy-music students were 40% more likely to be distracted by the unnecessary information than students who had listened to sad music were.
“Attention can act as a beam of spotlight,” says Anderson.A good mood broadens that beam,he says, and in some cases leads to more distractions. But when focused inward, the broader beam yields creativity.“I like this study quite a bit,” says psychologist Elizabeth Phelps of New York University. So does Jeremy Wolfe of Harvard Medical School in Boston. But,he cautions,“this is a modest manipulation of mood in a laboratory situation.” Future studies should address the effects of mood variation “in real-life situations”,he says.

Family traditions were important in our house, and none was more appreciated than the perfect Christmas tree.
“Dad,can we watch when you trim(修剪) the tree?”My eldest son,Dan,nine,and his seven-year-old brother John,asked.
“I won’t be cutting this year,”my husband Bob said.“Dan,you and John are old enough to measure things.Do it all by yourselves.Think you boys can handle it?”
Dan and John seemed to grow six inches in their chairs at the thought of such an amazing responsibility.“We can handle it,”Dan promised.“We won’t let you down.”
A few days before Christmas,Dan and John rushed in after school. They gathered the tools they’d need and brought them out to the yard, where the tree waited.I was cooking when I heard the happy sounds as the boys carried the tree into the living room. Then I heard the sound that every mother knows is trouble:dead silence.I hurried out to them. The tree was cut too short.John crossed his arms tight across his chest. His eyes filled with angry tears.
I felt worried. The tree was central to our holiday.I didn’t want the boys to feel ashamed every time they looked at it.I couldn’t lower the ceiling, and I couldn’t raise the floor either. There was no way to undo the damage done.Suddenly,a thought came to my mind, which turned the problem into the solution.
“We can’t make the tree taller,”I said.“But we can put it on a higher position.”
Dan nodded his head sideways,“We could put it on the coffee table. It just might work!Let’s try it!”
When Bob got home and looked at the big tree on top of the coffee table,Dan and John held their breath.
“What a good idea!”he declared.“Why didn’t I ever think of such a thing?”

Holiday visitors to Waikiki Beach,Hawaii, may do a double take at the four-legged surfer riding into shore, but the regulars are always calm. They know the eight-year-old pug is Bugsy,a local star whose owner,David Yew,taught the guy,er,dog to surf.
Yew,39,got the idea while he and Bugsy were walking on the beach and came upon a statue of a surfer.Yew put the dog down on the surfboard to take a photo, and the scene looked so natural that Yew was inspired to take the next step.Soon enough, the two were together surfing.
“The first time we paddled out,”Yew says,“Bugsy ran right to the front of the board.”
The two ride a 3.35m,rubber-filled long board.“It gives Bugsy a better hold,”Yew says.He loves the water and dog-paddles so well that Yew has trouble keeping up.
Bugsy wasn’t always so energetic. Two days after Yew,a doctor of emergency medicine, adopted the 12-week-old puppy from a shelter,Bugsy came down with a bad cough, which progressed to pneumonia(肺炎).Yew rushed the pug to the emergency department of an animal hospital, where he stayed until Yew could no longer afford to keep him there.Bugsy needed further treatment,so Yew built his own ICU(重症监护室) in his apartment. He covered an empty fish tank with plastic to use it for further treatment and gave the sick puppy intravenous antibiotics(静脉注射抗生素).Bugsy pulled through.
Since then, the doctor and the dog have been inseparable.“Saving Bugsy’s life created unconditional trust between us,”Yew says.
The pair surf together every week and have shared other activities, including skydiving. At Yew’s wedding to dentist Aimee Kim last year,Bugsy in a dress carried the rings down the aisle placed in a pillow on his back.

Dear_Editor,
I am very glad that the English Summer Camp will be held, which consists of many courses, such as hip-hop,cooking,kung fu and nursing.I want to attend the course about nursing, because I have always dreamt of becoming a nurse since I was a little child.
For one thing,I hope to gain a bit more knowledge of nursing so that it can help me to major in nursing after attending college. For another, learning more about nursing can help to take good care of my parents and relatives.
As is known to all, there are many senior citizens in China. Therefore,I want to devote my life to looking after them after I graduate from college.Nursing is a difficult task in fact, because it needs a lot of patience and skills. So I hope I can learn some basic knowledge of nursing by making full use of this chance.
I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Wang_Xiaohua
