Show Formality With A Pronoun
There are plenty of ways to show respect in English, but what English is missing is the formal “you”. But English has a single, widely accepted second-person pronoun. This is also why English doesn’t have a standard form for addressing more than one person.
___22___. Back in the days of Old English, the word “thou” was the singular you and “ye” was the plural you. By the 13th century, these two had shifted, so “thou” was the informal you and “ye” was the formal one. But over the past several centuries, the pronouns shifted again: “ye” became “you” and replaced both of them.
___23___
How many vowels (元音) does English have Well, if you look at the alphabet, it has only five: A, E, I, O and U. Six if you throw in Y. But if you actually listen to English, there are a lot more. English tries its best to reflect this in its writing system, but the fact of the matter is that people learning English through reading are going to struggle to figure out what vowels sound like. When you throw in different dialects and clusters (群组) like “trough, though, tough”, you can see how tricky a language this really is. ___24___.
You could say, then, that there’s nothing on this list English “can’t” do. We probably won’t wake up tomorrow and suddenly have a completely different word order, but the Englishes spoken 10, 50 and 100 years from now will all differ from the ones we speak today.___25___.

B.Express The Standard Form Of Respect
C.One of the strange things, though, is that English used to have both of these

Rethinking Obesity(肥胖症)
In principle, it sounds simple: eat less and move more. This dietary advice for dealing with obesity has been around for decades. ____31____ So why hasn’t this approach to weight control worked
One possibility is that we haven’t tried hard enough. Perhaps we have lacked the discipline and willpower to maintain healthy dietary and exercise habits—a challenge made more difficult today for those surrounded by inexpensive, tasty highly processed foods.
____32____ In a recent paper, my colleagues and I question the basic assumption of whether taking in more calories than you burn really is the primary cause of obesity. We argue that we are driven to overeat because we are getting fatter.
The key to how this works in obesity is insulin (胰岛素) processed, rapidly digestible carbohydrates (碳水化合物食品) raise our insulin level too high. ____33____ A few hours after eating a high-carb meal, the number of calories in the blood stream falls suddenly, so we get hungrier sooner after eating.
The two opposing views of cause and effect in obesity have very different implications for how to prevent and treat weight problems. The usual approach focuses on how much to eat, with prescriptions (处方) for daily calorie intake. ____34____ Higher-fat foods may help get rid of body fat, a possibility supported by clinical trials comparing high-fat diets with low-fat ones.
This way of thinking might help explain why calorie restriction usually fails long before a person with obesity approaches an ideal body weight. A low-calorie, low-fat diet further restricts an already limited supply of energy to the body, worsening hunger without addressing the underlying tendency to store too many calories in body fat. ____35____
Although much more research will be needed to test this idea, it is time to question the basic assumptions about cause and effect calories and weight gain that have controlled our thinking.
A.Yet, worldwide obesity rates just keep going up.

It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.
Downsize the dishes. ____105____ We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tail, skinny glass.

How is eating in space different from eating on Earth

First, and possibly most important, is nutrition (营养). ____156____ Providing junk food to eat, such as potato chips, sodas, and pizza, would make the astronauts unhealthy.
____157____ If the food that has been provided is distasteful, then the astronauts may avoid eating it. If you’ve ever tried to concentrate on something important while your stomach doesn’t feel well, you’ll know why the scientists in charge of a space mission(task) want their astronauts to eat regularly.
The lack (缺少) of gravity (pull) in a spacecraft also determines what foods can or cannot be eaten in space. Meals must be packaged carefully so they won’t spill(洒落/溢出) into the cabin (one of the areas inside a spacecraft). Water or tiny bits of food could get inside a machine or electronic device and damage it. ____158____ A loose knife bouncing (弹起) around inside the cabin would be dangerous.
____159____ The weight of every object included in a spacecraft must be calculated (计算) in order to ensure that there is enough fuel and power to carry the craft safely into space and back home again. ____160____ Most foods are stored in plastic bags, and often, the foods are dehydrated (使脱水). When an astronaut is ready to eat, hot water is added to the meal and warm it up.
