(2019·江西南昌二中高一期中)If you want to become a fluent English speaker you should take some advice. There are four skills in learning English. They are reading listening, speaking, and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills you should first master the skills of reading and listening.
Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of sentences, the meaning of unfamiliar words, etc. There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammar or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across, but the fact that you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example in other passages or books,is enough. It would be better to prepare a notebook for yourself so you can write down the important words or sentences in it.
As for listening, there are two choices besides reading. You can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skilful at your reading, and then you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening.
For listening you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy. Or if you are good at listening you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes.
If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve automatically and you can be sure that with a little effort they will become perfect.

(2019·北京一零一中学高一期中)If Confucius(孔子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.
While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day,few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.
But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper under standing of China.
In the past two decades, the Chinese study programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in a lot of countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power to the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.
So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well.
Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.
As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.

D. Old Thinker with a Big Future
8. The passage is likely to appear in_________.

(2019·江苏江阴四校高一期中)If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter. This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles.
The study also found the effect is greater when the younger people learn a second language. A team led by Dr. Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five,as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density(密度)in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.

(2019·山东济南历城区高一期中)If you spend some time in an English-speaking country, you might hear the term “etiquette”. 16 This may seem like a difficult word at first, but it can be very useful to understand.
17 For example, standing very close to the person you are talking with is quite common in some Asian countries. However,if you do this in Europe, some people might feel uncomfortable. Even in China,we all know that etiquette is not the same in all situations. Perhaps we think that talking loudly in our own homes is fine, but there are other places where talking loudly is not allowed. For example, most people would agree that talking loudly in a library,a museum or a movie theater is impolite. 18 it is better to keep your voice down in public places.
If we see someone breaking the rules of etiquette,we may politely give them some suggestions. One of the most polite ways is to ask someone—“Would you mind doing this or would you mind not doing that?” 19 so we have to be careful about how we do this.
Although rules of etiquette can often be different, some rules are the same almost everywhere in the world! 20 If you see someone you know doing this, you can ask him , “Would you mind picking it up ”
A. Even if you are with your friends,
B. Etiquette plays an important part in society.
C. It means normal and polite social behavior.

F. For example, dropping litter is almost never allowed.

When you are learning English, listening, speaking and writing are important, but reading can also be very helpful. When you read, you can not only learn some new words, but also learn how to use these English words. When you read,it gives you a good example for writing.
Read something that you can(more or less)understand. If you need to stop every three words to use a dictionary it is not interesting. Reading books with a reasonable number of new words is very important. If there are four or five new words on a page, write them in your notebook. But you don't have to write them while you read. Instead, try to guess their meaning as you read, and mark them with a pen. Then comeback when you have finished reading to look them up in a dictionary and write them in your own vocabulary book.
根据第30空后的 each other’s journals可知,此处为 journal日志,日记。story故事;remark评论;joke玩笑。
29. A固定搭配题。空格前的名词是 reaction,表示“对于……的反应”,其介词搭配为to。
30. A下文语境题。下文提到 He gave it a D(他给了一个D),所以此处老师是让同学们为彼此的日记评“等级”(grade)。
cheer up使高兴;bring up抚养长大;turn up(声音)开大一些,出现。
36. an 37. frequently 38. as 39. spoken 40. Actually 41. changing 42. expressions 43. which mands 45. suggests
