Ⅲ. 故事续写
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
When my two-year-old son was diagnosed with the Attention Deficit Disorder, my first reaction was relief—I finally knew the reason for his symptoms. However, I was also overwhelmed with sadness, fear and anger. I felt sorry for my son and for myself. Like many others in similar circumstances, my question was “Why me ”.
In spite of this, I am now able to focus on my gratitude. I believe that I would give him the best I have with enthusiasm. He will teach me to love and understand him for who he is. I am grateful that I have my son, and I am grateful that I was chosen to be his mother.
There is power and healing in gratitude.
How can gratitude help us in our everyday lives as moms Look at all the people around you, and think about the difference you can make in your family’s life just by noticing and being thankful for all the great things they do. When life is good, gratitude is easy. That’s to say, when you express gratitude, you show your love and appreciation. Everyone needs to feel these things every day. Sometimes as moms we feel that no one appreciates us—and it is true that moms are usually last on the list to be thanked. One way you can teach gratitude is by example. Even on the days when it seems your children or husband are doing everything wrong, find a reason to thank them. Take the time and energy to look for the good. Think about the things that your family do and things that deserve a “thank you”. You might say to your husband, “Thank you for working so hard for our family”, or, to your child, “I really appreciate your sense of humor—it feels good to laugh.” Expressing your gratitude helps family members to understand how it feels to be appreciated. And if they still don’t catch on, let them know when you feel unappreciated. You can also tell them how great it makes you feel when they do express gratitude.

In the busy city of New York, such an astonishing thing happened. On a Friday night,a poor young artist stood at the gate of the subway station, playing his violin. Though people were quickly going home for the weekend, many of them slowed down their paces and put some money into the hat of the young man.
The next day, the young artist came to the gate again, and put his hat on the ground gracefully. He took out a large piece of paper, laid it on the ground and put some stones on it. Then he adjusted the violin and began playing. It sounded more pleasant.
Before long, the young violinist was surrounded with people who were all attracted by the words on the paper which said, “Last night, a gentleman named George Sang put an important thing into my hat by mistake. Please come to claim it soon.”
Seeing this, people wondered what it could be. After about half an hour, a middle-aged man ran there in a hurry and rushed through the crowd to the violinist and grabbed his shoulders and said, “Yes, it’s you. You do come here. I know that you’re an honest man and will certainly come here.”
The young violinist asked calmly, “Are you Mr. George Sang
The man nodded. The violinist asked, “Did you lose something ”
“It’s a lottery ticket,” said the man.
The violinist took out a lottery ticket on which George Sang’s name was seen.” Is this yours ” he asked. George nodded happily.
A few days ago George Sang bought a lottery ticket. The awards opened yesterday and he won a prize of $ 500,000. So he felt very happy and then he took out 50 dollars and put in the hat yesterday. However, unfortunately the lottery ticket was also thrown in.
The violinist was a student at an Arts College in Vienna and had booked a ticket and would fly that morning.

Ⅳ. 概要写作
A
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Physicist Stephen Hawking said people should return to the moon and go to Mars because leaving Earth may be the only way to save humanity.
Hawking said that as Earth faces climate change and pressure on natural resources, human beings need to reach beyond our planet.
“We are running out of space and the only places to go to are other worlds,” he said. “It is time to explore other solar systems. Spreading out may be the only thing that saves us from ourselves. I am convinced that humans need to leave Earth, he added. “If humanity is to continue for another million years, our future lies in boldly going where no one else has gone before.”
The University of Cambridge professor spoke during a visit(in June)to the Starmus Festival in Trondheim, Norway.
Hawking said human beings should return to the Moon by the year 2020 and Mars by 2025. “This,” he said, “will unite humans in the shared purpose of exploring the universe.”
“Spreading out into space will completely change the future of humanity”, he said. “I hope it would unite competitive nations in a single goal, to face the common challenge for us all.”
Hawking added that reaching the Moon, Mars and other planets would get young people interested in spacerelated sciences.
He said making the first moves into space would “elevate humanity” because it would have to involve many countries.
Whenever we make a great new leap, such as the Moon landings, we bring people and nations together, usher(引导)in new discoveries, and new technologies, Hawking said. “To leave Earth demands a concerted global approach, so everyone should join in. We need to rekindle(重新燃起)the excitement of the early days of space travel in the 1960s.”
The European Space Agency has announced a plan to create a “Moon Village” after the International Space Station is taken out of service in 2024. China is also reportedly interested in sending an astronaut to the Moon.
The United States is working on sending astronauts to Mars. The U.S. space agency, NASA, hopes to do this by the 2030s.

阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
We all have daily problems with technology, but how many of us can fix them Mya Le Thai, a scientist from the University of California, Irvine. She recently discovered a process that might result in batteries that could last forever.
Thai said she was frustrated that the batteries for her wireless devices degraded. Over time, they failed to charge fully. Thai did not like to keep her wireless laptop connected to an electrical outlet. She decided to do something about that problem. At first, she and her team at UC Irvine thought about inventing a new battery. But as they experimented, Thai discovered something that might permit lithium-ion(锂离子)batteries to last forever. Lithium-ion batteries power most wireless devices. Over time, the batteries lose the ability to hold a charge. One of the reasons why lithium-ion batteries degrade is their use of nanowires(纳米线)to carry electricity. Nanowires are extremely thin. They are extremely efficient carriers of electricity, which makes them useful in batteries. But their thinness also makes them weak. “Nanowires break over time,” she said. “That’s why they lose capacity.”
But, Thai had a theory: The nanowires might last longer if covered with a gel. She and the team tested her theory. “It was a long process and a lot of work,” Thai said. The team tried many coverings for the wires. The nanowires were coated with a gel, PMMA, and cycled through charging 200,000 times. The gel showed no evidence of damage. The results suggested that batteries could last forever without losing charging ability.
Thai said 200,000 cycles amount to about three months on just one device. Thai hopes to continue her research to see if any other gel could work better.
Thai told VOA she was enjoying the publicity about her discovery. She said she never expected her research to get media coverage. “It’s kind of cool,” she said. “I’m really glad people are showing interest in my work—not just in the work itself, but also in technology and energy.”

Dear Lily,
I’ve learned that your school Chinese Club is planning to organize the activity “Read Classics & Learn Chinese”. My suggestions are as follows.
To begin with, you’d better choose some simple poems written by famous poets such as Bai Juyi, Li Bai and Du Fu, whose poems are full of rhythm and easy to understand. Besides, by reading these poems you can experience the beauty of Chinese language as well as learn about the Chinese culture. As for the organization, personally, I advise acting out the poems and reading them to appropriate music, which may make the activity both instructive and entertaining.
I hope that my suggestions will be helpful.
Yours,
Li Hua
