The number of animals in Uganda’s national parks has increased over the past decade, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) says. The number of species that have been declared extinct is overestimated(过高估计),some scientists have said.
A study has found that a third of all mammal species declared extinct in the past few centuries have turned up alive and well. Some of the shyer creatures managed to hide from sight for 80 years only to reappear within four years of being officially named extinct in the wild.
The shy okapi—an African animal like a giraffe but with a shorter neck—was first discovered in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1901.Then it seemed to vanish(消失) for decades from 1959;it was believed that it had died out.But in 2005,some researchers found okapi tracks in the wild.
Other mammals “back from the dead” include the rat-like Cuban rat,the flying fox of the Solomon Islands, the Australian central rock rat and the Talaud flying fox of Indonesia.
However, many scientists believe the world is going through a new “mass extinction” caused by mankind—more species are disappearing now than at any time since the dinosaurs vanished 65 million years ago.For example, the Tasmanian Wolf in Australia, the Quagga, the Caspian Tiger, the Stellers Sea Cow have all disappeared.
According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature,22 percent of the world’s mammals are at risk of extinction. In Britain, more than two plant and animal species are being wiped out each year.
1.Which of the following is TRUE about Uganda’s national parks?
A.Many animals have hidden there for 80 years.
B.The okapi was last seen there before disappearing.
C.A third of all mammals “back from the dead” are living there.
D.The number of animals there has increased over the past ten years.
2.When was the okapi thought to be extinct?
A.In 1901. B.In 1959.
C.In 2001. D.In 2005.
3.According to the passage, which of the following has vanished?
A.The Talaud flying fox of Indonesia.
B.The rat-like Cuban rat.
C.The Stellers Sea Cow.
D.The Australian central rock rat.
4. What can be the best title for the passage?
A.Animal population increases VS mass extinction
B.The beautiful Ugandan national parks
C.The life of the okapi before and after disappearing
D.The extinction of the world’s mammals

You can’t always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn’t think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That’s why he created Lampbrella,a lamp post with its own rain-sensing umbrella.
The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia.“Once,I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain.I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy(伞蓬)built into a street lamp,” he said.
The Lampbrella is a standard-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand.Sensors(传感器)then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining.
In addition to the rain sensor, there’s also a 360°motion sensor on the fiberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone is using the Lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.
According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed,so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians.Besides,it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each Lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people.Being installed(安装) at 2 metres off the ground,it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians.
While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production,Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists his creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.
5.For what purpose did Belyaev create the Lampbrella?
A.To predict a heavy rain.
B.To check the weather forecast.
C.To protect people from the rain.
D.To remind people to take an umbrella.
6.What do we know from Belyaev’s words in Paragraph 2?
A.His creation was inspired by an experience.
B.It rains a lot in the city of Saint Petersburg.
C.Street lamps are protected by canopies.
D.He enjoyed taking walks in the rain.
7.Which of the following shows how the Lampbrella works?
A.motor→canopy→sensors
B.sensors→motor→canopy
C.motor→sensors→canopy
D.canopy→motor→sensors
8.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The designer will open a company to promote his product.
B.The Lampbrella could be put into immediate production.
C.The designer is confident that his creation is practical.
D.The Lampbrella would be put on show in Moscow

An international team of scientists have found that up to four billion tons of methane(甲烷) gas could be under ice-covered areas of Antarctica(南极洲).And they say if enough ice melts(融化),it is possible that the gas could run out and add to the warming of Earth’s air.
Jemima Wadham of Bristol University in Britain directed the study. She says the amount of methane gas recorded is more than ten times the amount of that in the Arctic(北极).Sandra Arndt, who teaches in Utrecht University in the Netherlands, also works on the study and she says the high pressure and cold temperatures under the ice make good conditions for forming methane hydrate(水合物),which is like ice.The scientists say the methane gas came from a period thirty-five million years ago when Antarctica was much warmer than today and contained a small amount of life forms.Researcher Slawek Tulaczyk of the University of California at Santa Barbara describes how the methane gas formed:some of the life forms fell to the bottom, then these sediments were cut off from the rest of the world when the ice grew and buried below.
Earlier this year, methane gas was also found in the opposite end of the world.Researchers found thousands of places in the Arctic where methane gas was rising to the surface. They found one hundred and fifty thousand seeps(渗出口)—places in Alaska and Greenland where methane gas had escaped.
Euan Nisbet, who researches the methane gas, from the University of London, describes the Arctic area as the fastest-warming area on Earth. He says the area has many methane sources that will increase as the temperature rises. He says there is a serious concern that the warming could cause more warming. And the news of finding methane gas in Antarctic adds to his worry as the ice top of Antarctic is melting at a high speed.
1.How much methane gas could be under the Arctic areas in Jemima’s opinion?
A.About four billion tons.
B.Less than forty billion tons.
C.About four million tons.
D.Less than four hundred million tons.
2.According to the scientists,thirty-five million years ago________.
A.there were some life forms in Antarctica
B.Antarctica was rich in life
C.Antarctica was as cold as today
D.Antarctica was covered with ice and snow
3.What does the underlined word “sediments” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Something that is lost forever.
B.Something that is new and important.
C.Something that falls to the bottom.
D.Something that can produce energy.
4.We can learn from the passage that________.
A.Jemima Wadham and Sandra Arndt work in the same university
B.one hundred and fifty thousand seeps were found in Antarctica
C.the cold temperatures help to form methane gas in Antarctica
D.Whether exploring the methane gas in Antarctic is under discussion

Japanese students usually wear uniforms,Ueda said, and have set curriculums(课程) that are light on options and heavy on academics(学习).The teachers are also much stricter than the ones here.“They don’t say any jokes and they’re always wearing suits,” he said.“They’re always angry at students,” he added. He was really hungry that day so he tried to take an early bite of rice from his lunch. The teacher found that and smacked him on the head.Alexander said he’d like to go back to Japan, and recommend(推荐) exchange programs for anyone interested in new languages.Ueda will go back home in 10 months. He said he wasn’t sure what he’d miss about Canada when he returns, but said it probably wouldn’t be the winter.

Societies all over the world name places in similar ways.Quite often there is no official naming ceremony but places tend to be called names as points of reference by people. Then an organized body steps in and gives the place a name.Frequently it happens that a place has two names:One is named by the people and the other by the government. As in many areas, old habits die_hard,and the place continues to be called by its unofficial name long after the meaning is lost.
Many roads and places in Singapore(新加坡) are named in order that the pioneers will be remembered by future generations. Thus we have names such as Stamford Road and Raffles Place. This is in keeping with traditions in many countries—in both the West and the East.
Another way of naming places is naming them after other places.Perhaps they were named to promote friendships between the two places or it could be that the people who used to live there were originally from the places that the roads were named after. The mystery is clearer when we see some of the roads named in former British bases. If you step into Selector Airbase you will see Piccadilly Circus—obviously named by some homesick Royal Air Force personnel.
Some places were named after the activities that used to go on at those places.Bras Basah Road is an interesting example,“Bras Basah” means “wet rice” in Malay(马来语).Now why would anyone want to name a road “Wet Rice Road”?The reason is simple.During the pioneering days, wet rice was laid out to dry along this road.
A few roads in Singapore are named by their shapes. There is “Circular Road” for one.Other roads may have part of their names to describe their shapes, like “Paya Lebar Crescent”.This road is called a crescent(月牙) because it begins on the main road, makes a crescent and comes back to join the main road again.
64.We learn from Paragraph 1 that________.
A.the government is usually the first to name a place
B.many places tend to have more than one name
C.a ceremony will be held when a place is named
D.people prefer the place names given by the government
65.What does the underlined phrase “die hard” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A.Change suddenly.
B.Change significantly.
C.Disappear mysteriously.
D.Disappear very slowly.
66.Which of the following places is named after a person?
A.Raffles Place.
B.Selector Airbase.
C.Piccadilly Circus.
D.Paya Lebar Crescent.
67.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Some place names in Singapore are the same as in Britain.
B.Some places in Singapore are named for military purposes.
C.The way Singaporeans name their places is unique.
D.Young Singaporeans have forgotten the pioneers.
D
The largest earthquake (magnitude里氏9.5) of the 20th century happened on May 22,1960 off the coast of South Central Chile.
It generated(生成) one of the most destructive Pacificwide tsunamis(海啸).Near the generating area, both the earthquake and the tsunami were very much destructive, particularly in the coastal area from Concepcion to the south end of Isla Chiloe. The largest tsunami damage occurred at Isla Chiloe—the coastal area closest to the epicenter(震中).Huge tsunami waves measuring as high as 25 meters arrived within 10 to 15 minutes after the earthquake, killing at least two hundred people, sinking all the boats, and flooding half a kilometer inland.
There was large damage and loss of life at Concepcion,Chile’s top industrial city.Near the city of Valdivia, the earthquake and following aftershocks generated landslides which killed 18 people. At the port city of Valparaiso,a city of 200,000,many buildings collapsed.A total of 130,000 houses were destroyed—one in every three in the earthquake zone and nearly 2,000,000 people were left homeless.
Total damage losses, including to agriculture and to industry, were estimated(估计) to be over a half billion dollars. The total number of death related with both the tsunami and the earthquake was never found accurately for the region.Estimates of deaths reached between 490 to 57,002 with no distinction(差别) as to how many deaths were caused by the earthquake and how many were caused by the tsunami. However,it is believed that most of the deaths in Chile were caused by the tsunami.
68.Where did the largest tsunami damage occur?
A.Concepcion. B.Isla Chiloe.
C.Valdivia. D.Valparaiso.
69.What can we learn about the tsunami waves generated by the earthquake?
A.The tsunami waves as high as 25 meters arrived immediately after the earthquake.

It is almost one year since I entered senior high school.I’m happy to tell you something about my school life.
My school is fifty kilometers away from my hometown. Not living with my parents,I have learned how to live on my own.And I’ve made some new friends, from whom I’ve learned a lot.I have made great progress in my English and math.Besides,in my spare time,I often take part in different kinds of after-school activities. For example, every week I go to the English Corner where I communicate with others in English.
What about your school life?Would you like to share it with me?
Looking forward to receiving your reply early.
Best wishes.
