You are watching a film in which two men are having a fight. They hit one another hard.At the start they only fight with their fists. But soon they begin hitting one another over the heads with chairs. And so it goes on until one of the men crashes through a window and falls thirty feet to the ground below. He is dead!
Of course he isn’t really dead. With any luck he isn’t even hurt. Why?Because the men who fall out of high windows or jump from fast moving trains, who crash cars or even catch fire, are professionals. They do this for a living. These men are called stuntmen. That is to say, they perform tricks.
There are two sides to their work. They actually do most of the things you see on the screen. For example, they fall from a high building. However, they do not fall on to hard ground but on to empty cardboard boxes covered with a mattress(床垫).Again, when they hit one another with chairs, the chairs are made of soft wood and when they crash through windows, the glass is made of sugar!
But although their work depends on trick of this sort,it also requires a high degree of skill and training.Often a stuntman’s success depends on careful timing. For example, when he is “blown up” in a battle scene,he has to jump out of the way of the explosion just at the right moment.Naturally stuntmen are well paid for their work, but they lead dangerous lives. They often get seriously injured, and sometimes killed.A Norwegian stuntman, for example, skied over the edge of a cliff a thousand feet high. His parachute(降落伞) failed to open, and he was killed. In spite of all the risks, this is no longer a profession for men only.Men no longer dress up as women when actresses have to perform some dangerous action. For nowadays there are stuntwomen too.
1. Stuntmen are those who ________.
A.often dress up as actors
B.prefer to lead dangerous lives
C.often perform seemingly dangerous action
D.often fight each other for their lives
2. Stuntmen earn their living by ________.
A.playing their dirty tricks
B.selling their special skills
C.jumping out of high windows
D.jumping from fast moving trains
3. Which of the following is the main factor of a successful performance?
A.Strength. B.Exactness.
C.Speed. D.Carefulness.
4. What can be inferred from the author’s example of the Norwegian stuntman?
A.Sometimes an accident can occur to a stuntman.
B.The percentage of serious accidents is high.
C.Parachutes must be of good quality.
D.The cliff is too high.

Arthur Miller (1915~2005) is universally recognized as one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century.Miller’s father had moved to the USA from Austria-Hungary,drawn like so many others by the “Great American Dream”.However,he experienced severe financial hardship when his family business was ruined in the Great Depression of the early 1930s.
Miller’s most famous play,Death of a Salesman,is a powerful attack on the American system, with its aggressive way of doing business and its insistence on money and social status as indicators of worth. In Willy Loman, the hero of the play,we see a man who has got into trouble with this system.Willy is “burnt out” and in the cruel world of business there is no room for sentiment:if he can’t do the work, then he is no good to his employer, the Wagner Company, and he must go.Willy is painfully aware of this, and at a loss as to what to do with his lack of success. He refuses to face the fact that he has failed and kills himself in the end.
When it was first staged in 1949,the play was greeted with enthusiastic reviews, and it won the Tony Award for Best Play, the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was the first play to win all three of these major awards.
Miller died of heart failure at his home in Roxbury,Connecticut,on the evening of February 10,2005,the 56th anniversary of the first performance of Death of a Salesman on Broadway.
5. Why did Arthur Miller’s father move to the USA?
A.He suffered from severe hunger in his home country.
B.He was attracted by the “Great American Dream”.
C.He hoped to make his son a dramatist.
D.His family business failed.
6. The play Death of a Salesman ________.
A.exposes the cruelty of the American business world
B.discusses the ways to get promoted in a company
C.talks about the business career of Arthur Miller
D.focuses on the skills in doing business
7. What can we learn about Willy Loman?
A.He treats his employer badly.
B.He runs the Wagner Company.
C.He is a victim of the American system.
D.He is regarded as a hero by his colleagues.
8. What is the text mainly about?
A.Arthur Miller and his family.
B.The awards Arthur Miller won.
C.The hardship Arthur Miller experienced.
D.Arthur Miller and his best-known play.

Dear Reader,
Today I am going to ask you to support Wikipedia with a donation.
Wikipedia is built differently from almost every other top 50 websites. We have a small number of paid staff, just twenty-three.Wikipedia content is free to use by anyone for any purpose. Our annual expenses are less than six million dollars.Wikipedia is run by the non-profit Wikipedia Foundation, which I founded in 2003.
Wikipedia is driven by a global community of more than 150,000 volunteers—all devoted to sharing knowledge freely.Over almost eight years, these volunteers have contributed more than 11 million articles in 265 languages.More than 275 million people come to our website every month to access information, free of charge and free of advertising.
But Wikipedia is more than a website. We share a common cause:Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That’s our commitment.
Your donation helps us in several ways. Most importantly, you will help us cover the increasing cost of managing global traffic to one of the most popular websites on the Internet.Funds also help us improve the software that runs Wikipedia—making it easier to search, easier to read, and easier to write for.We are committed to increasing the free knowledge movement worldwide,by taking on new volunteers, and building strategic partnerships with institutions of culture and learning.
Wikipedia is different. It’s the largest encyclopedia(百科全书) in history, written by volunteers.Like a national park or a school,we don’t believe advertising should have a place in Wikipedia. We want to keep it free and strong, but we need the support of thousands of people like you.
Thank you,
Jimmy Wales

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
“In only six days I lost seven pounds of weight.”
“Two full inches in the first three days!”
These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper, radio and television ads, promising new shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device. The promoters of such products say they can shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles,or in some other way add to beauty or desirability.
Often such products are nothing more than money-making things for their promoters. The results they produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health.
To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public,it is necessary to understand something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug,FDA (Food and Drug Administration) can require proof(证明) under the Food,Drug, and Cosmetic Act that it is safe and effective before it is put on the market. But if the product is a device,FDA has no authority to require premarketing proof of safety or effectiveness. If a product already on the market is a danger to health,FDA can request the producer or distributor to remove it from the market voluntarily,or it can take legal action, including seizure(查封) of the product.
One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, which had been sold for reducing the waistline. The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the body through contact pads.FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the devices on the grounds that it was dangerous to health and life.
Obviously, most of the devices on the market have never been the subject of court proceedings(法律诉讼),and new devices appear continually. Before buying,it is up to judge the consumer to judge the safety or effectiveness of such items.
56.It can be inferred that the ads mentioned in the text are ________.
A.objective B.costly C.unreliable D.illegal
57.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A.The court is in charge of removing dangerous products.
B.New products are more likely to be questionable.
C.The production of a device must be approved by FDA.
D.The promoters usually just care about profits.
58.The Relaxacisor is mentioned as ________.
A.a product which was designed to produce electricity
B.a product whose distributor was involved in a legal case
C.a successful advertisement of a beauty product
D.an example of a quality beauty product
59.The author intends to ________.
A.make consumers aware of the promoters’ false promises
B.show the weakness of the law on product safety
C.give advice on how to keep young and beautiful
D.introduce the organization of FDA
B
Churchill was born on November 30,1874 in Blenheim Palace,Oxfordshire,England. As a young man of undistinguished academic accomplishment,he entered the army.He served as a cavalry (骑兵) officer in India and Sudan but resigned his commission in 1899 to become a war correspondent (通讯记者) in the Boer War.Churchill entered the Parliament in 1901 at the age of 27.Later he was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer. He resigned office in 1931 after some controversial measures.
And when the final moment of confrontation between Britain and Hitler came in 1940,he stood out as one man in whom the nation could place its trust. When Chamberlain lost the confidence of Parliament,Churchill was installed in the premiership.During 1942,the prestige Britain had won as Hitler’s only enemy allowed Churchill to sustain the leadership in the anti-Nazi alliance with Roosevelt and Stalin.Shortly afterwards he lost the general election and later returned to power in 1951.
In July,1953 soon after his knighthood and the coronation (加冕) of Queen Elizabeth Ⅱ,he suffered a stroke. He continued to hold office until 1955 when ill health and visibly failing powers caused him to resign.Sir Winston’s last 10 years were marked by an increasing feebleness (微弱) in health and were occupied by occasional travel and a little painting. He died in 1965.
Churchill stood unchallengable as the greatest of all war leaders and was celebrated for national leadership during World War Ⅱ.As a prolific (多产的)writer, his Life of Marlborough is one of the greatest English biographies and The History of the Second World War helped him win a Nobel Prize for literature.Sir Churchill occupies a special place in the hearts of the British people symbolizing a magnificent performance in heroic days.
60.How many resignations are mentioned in the passage?

A child sits at his desk waiting for the teacher to hand back his test and praying that it is not sprayed with red marks.Fellow students in the classroom know a paper that has several red markings on it will usually receive a lower grade. The child with many red markings on his test will quickly fold the paper and stuff it into his desk in the hope that no one saw his test.
There is an education movement to retire the reds for the softer colors of purple, green, and blue pens to mark students’ work. Many educators understand the psychological harm the constant red markings on the paper do to a child’s self-esteem.After a child receives his test back with countless red markings there is a rare chance he will bother to find out his errors. It is too embarrassing in the classroom to examine his errors and also many children do not want to show their parents their red stained test.
The purpose of grading a paper or test is to identify the child’s weakness and offer suggestions to improve their ability in a specific subject.Red markings are too bold for the student to calmly understand their errors;instead they become agitated(气恼的) and begin their self-critical dialogue. No students wants to fail;they just do not know how to excel.
All colors have an impact on our state of mind.Red is a powerful color that gives us energy.Colors such as blues and greens are calming colors to the body.Hospitals often have doctors wear blue or green scrubs(手术手套) because it relaxes the patient on a subconscious level.I have never seen a doctor wear red scrubs because it will stress the patient.Remember this when you decide to mark a child’s paper with red,the color of blood.
64.What is the text mainly about?
A.How a child sees his test result.
B.How to grade a student’s paper.
C.The harm of using red color in grading students’ papers.
D.Different impacts of colors.
65.Students will not bother to find out their errors because ________.
A.they have made too many mistakes
B.they are ashamed of their papers with red markings
C.they don’t care about the mistakes they made
D.they are not satisfied with the results
66.We can infer from the passage that ________.
A.many educators still prefer to give red markings on students’ papers
B.we should mark students’ papers with various colors
C.red markings are a kind of drive for students to learn
D.students who receive red markings on their papers may do worse
67.The author of the passage probably agrees that ________.
A.it’s better to grade students’ papers with softer colors
B.it’s not necessary to point out students’ mistakes
C.it’s wrong to retire the reds in grading students’ papers
D.it’s necessary to grade students’ papers with red sometimes
D
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is one of the most loved children’s books of all time, and many adults enjoy it as well.It tells the story of a young girl named Alice, who follows a rabbit entering a magical world called Wonderland. She has many experiences which seem to change the rules of reasoning or common sense. The popularity of the book comes from its imagination, interesting story, and art work.
The writer of the book is Lewis Carroll. In fact,Lewis Carroll was not the writer’s real name. His real name was Charles Dodgson. One day,he took a boat ride down the Thames River to have a picnic with three little girls who were friends of the family. To keep them entertained on the ride,he told them a story in which Alice, the middle child, was the main character. They enjoyed the story very much.
Charles later wrote the story down under the name Alice’s Adventures Under Ground and gave it to Alice as a Christmas present.Later,he gave a copy to his friend George MacDonald.George read it to his children and they loved it.George suggested to Charles that he make a book from his story.Charles then wrote more parts to the story until it was around 35,000 words. It was first printed in 1866,with art work by John Tenniel, under the name Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The book was an immediate success.
One of its first fans was Queen Victoria. She immediately requested a collection of all of Lewis Carroll’s works. She was surprised to find that they included many works on math.In fact,Charles Dodgson was a highly respected mathematician. This can be seen in many puzzles and plays on reasoning that appear in his books and poems.
Since the story was first printed,it has kept selling up to the present day.It has been translated into over fifty languages and has had several movies based on it.The story is even mentioned in the popular 1999 film The Matrix by the character Morpheus.
68.The passage is mainly about________.
A.Charles’ family life
B.a girl’s adventurous experiences
C.a magical world called Wonderland
D.the birth of a book and its lasting influences
69.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

B.The character Alice originated from George’s child.
C.John contributed partly to the popularity of the book.
D.Charles offered a copy to George for advice.
70.We can learn from the passage that________.
