It was Thanksgiving morning and in the crowded kitchen of my small home I was busy preparing the traditional Thanksgiving turkey when the doorbell rang.I opened the front door and saw two small children in rags huddling together inside the storm door on the top step.
“Any old papers, lady?”asked one of them.
I was busy.I wanted to say “no” until I looked down at their feet. They were wearing thin little sandals, wet with heavy snow.
“Come in and I’ll make you a cup of hot cocoa.”
They walked over and sat down at the table.Their wet sandals left marks upon the floor.I served them cocoa and bread with jam to fight against the cold outside. Then I went back to the kitchen and started again on my household budget.
The silence in the front room struck me.I looked in.The girl held the empty cup in her hands, looking at it.The boy asked in a flat voice,“Lady, are you rich?”
I looked at my shabby slipcovers(家具套).The girl put her cup back in its saucer carefully and said,“Your cups match your saucers.”Her voice was hungry with a need that no amount of food could supply. They left after that, holding their bundles of papers against the wind. They hadn’t said “Thank you.”They didn’t need to.They had reminded me that I had so much for which to be grateful.Plain blue china cups and saucers were only worth five pence. But they matched.
I tasted the potatoes and stirred the meat soup.Potatoes and brown meat soup,a roof over our heads,my man with a good steady job—these matched, too.
I moved the chairs back from the fire and cleaned the living room. The muddy prints of small sandals were still wet upon my floor.Let them be for a while,I thought, just in case I should begin to forget how rich I am.

I remember great Christmas with my family, but I never understood why my mom would cry on each Christmas.
When I was growing up,we struggled as a family. My parents were living the American dream. We moved to the US when I was one year old.My mom was already a doctor, but unfortunately, the US didn’t recognize her degree and she had to do it all over again. My dad, with his bachelor’s degree in finance from the Philippines, wasn’t looked at as equal to another person with the same degree,so his degree and former job experience were ignored. But he knew he had to provide food for us,so he worked as a bus boy at Denny’s.As the years passed,my dad got a job as a bank teller, trying to get back into the business world. He also did a part-time job as a manager for Taco Bueno to pay the bills. My mom worked two shifts(轮班) in a clinic.
You see, their road was tough. They believed that as long as they worked hard, finally they would be able to give their daughters a life full of opportunities and a Christmas full of gifts.
I didn’t quite understand the tears in my mom’s eyes when we opened our gifts, but I do now.As a mother,I get it.For a parent,Christmas is so much more.We want to give our children the list of toys whispered near Santa’s ears.We want to see little faces light up when they see their wish list in front of their eyes. When mom saw us open the gifts, she saw our smiles and was delighted and couldn’t help crying.
25 years later,my parents gave my sisters and me just that—not just material things but opportunities to go to college without the worries of student loans(贷款),travel, dream weddings and so on.My parents gave us the American dream.I’m so proud of them.
5. The writer’s mother cried on each Christmas probably because ________.

My grandmother was from a town in Michigan.Summer after summer,I enjoyed staying with my grandparents as a young child.I was from the city and loved the small town they lived in.People knew everyone, their kids, their pets, their ancestors. The bond with them continued to grow as I grew and they got older.Grandma was always using her hands for something exciting. She would make little sandwiches and we’d have tea parties. She’d make beautiful quilts for each one.I remember the small thimble(顶针) she would use while doing her needle work.
A few years ago, when Grandma left this earth,I bid farewell to a loving grandmother. How quickly our lives can change. We had just had tea together a couple of months earlier,on her 91st birthday.
I missed her very much.On one particular birthday, when I was feeling a little low, something happened to make me feel like she was sharing that special day with me.I was arranging some colorful pillows that she had made, and suddenly I felt something inside one pillow. It was small and hard.I moved the object to a seam(接缝) that I carefully opened, and to my delight out came a tiny silver thimble! How happy I was to find something that had been a part of her.Not realizing it had fallen off her finger,I pictured her sewing it in that little pillow that I just happened to place on my bedspread that day.I carefully laid the thimble alongside the others I’ve collected over the years, where I could continue to see the gift God chose to reveal to me.What a precious memory of a very special lady who somehow,I knew, was laughing in delight at sewing her thimble inside my pillow.
I made some tea, using my best china,as Grandma always did,and enjoyed my tea and Grandma’s thimble. What a wonderful birthday that was!

Public schools in Washington D.C.provide students with musical instruments for free. When something goes wrong with an instrument,Charles West and Larry Jernigan do the repairs. Both of them approach their work with a passion(激情).For them,it’s important that students have a joyful experience with music.
The two have worked together for almost 20 years. This year alone, they’ve fixed about 450 instruments. Both men are musicians and music lovers,so learning to do repairs came naturally.
“I have been a musician all my life.”says West.“I played in an orchestra here in the city.I majored in music in college.I played in an army band.”
Jernigan’s musical interests are varied.“I was formerly trained in the piano and guitar. The alto sax and the flute,I picked up while working here.”
In addition to fixing instruments, the two also go to schools to instruct teachers and students on how to make minor repairs on their own.
West believes if children start early and stay involved with music,it enriches other areas of their lives.“I see that in other kids.I see it in myself.I have seen it hundreds of times and it works.”he says.“They learn teamwork. They learn patience and respect.”
But West has concerns about the future of music in the electronic age.
“This instant age has taken away from the sit-down,the patience. And to learn to play an instrument,it takes patience,it takes diligence,it takes time.”
Being able to enjoy music on the job is one of the benefits of the job. Both of them agree their best rewards are the students’ performances.

“Everybody loves a bargain.” is a well-known saying. One person’s useless, ugly,or broken object can be another person’s bargain. That is why so many Americans do not throw things away. They put them outside their house. They put on a “For Sale”sign. And,as simple as that, they have a yard sale.
The sellers put a paid announcement in a local newspaper. It tells when and where the yard sale will take place. These sales are very popular during weekends in spring, summer, and autumn.Early in the morning, all the things to be sold are carried out of the house. Then they sit all day in the sunlight—like tired guests at a party—waiting for someone to take them home.
Just about anything can be sold at a yard sale.Sometimes, there are more clothes than anything else.Cooking equipment is also popular. So are old toys, tools, books, tables, and chairs. Then there are objects called “white elephants”.A white elephant is something that you think is extremely ugly or useless. It may be an electric light shaped like a fish. You feel a sharp pain whenever you look at it.To someone else, however,it might be a thing of beauty and joy.
Some people go to yard sales to find a special thing that they collect. It may be old toy trains, for example,or paintings of dogs.Experts say more Americans are collecting old things now than ever before. Most people who go to yard sales, however, are not looking for anything special. They might buy an object simply because it costs so little. They enjoy negotiating over prices, even if they really do not need the object.Later, they may hold their own yard sale to sell all the things they have bought.

In 1969 I was a young girl working in Toronto.I was from a small town in Ontario and had just moved to the big city about three months earlier. It was one week before Christmas and I was going home on the last streetcar of the evening.
I remember looking at my paycheque(工资单) and asking myself how it was going to endure. At that time in my life I hardly had enough money to exist on.Bread for supper and oatmeal for breakfast was the only way I kept hunger at bay.
I got off the streetcar and started walking up the street, when I suddenly noticed a man was running after me.I stopped, turned around, seeing that he was black.I snapped,“What do you want?” The man answered in a soft voice,“I am returning your wallet. You left it on the streetcar seat.”
Because of that man’s thoughtfulness,I was allowed the comfort of going home by bus for the summer holidays.Otherwise,I would have stayed alone in my small room with a hog plate.
I have never been so ashamed of myself, and that poor, kind man had to walk, who knows how far, home.
I recognized immediately that this was wrong of me and it changed my ways forever.
