Almost no young people today know who the cartoon character Oswald the Rabbit is,but they certainly recognize his successor,Bugs Bunny.Oswald,Bugs, and hundreds of other characters were created by Walt Disney, perhaps the most famous cartoonist in history.
Born in Chicago in 1901,Walt Disney always wanted to be an artist. After returning from World War Ⅰ,in which he drove an ambulance,Disney worked as a commercial artist. He enjoyed drawing cartoons more than anything else, and decided to try his hand at a technology that was new at the time, moving pictures.
In the 1920’s,he produced several films where he made cartoon characters move as if by magic. The technique Disney used was painstaking. He made hundreds or even thousands of repeated drawings of the same character. In each drawing, the character was changed just a bit.A film was taken of the series of drawings, and when it was shown, the characters appeared to move. The process, called animation,is still used today, although computers have made the process much easier.
In 1928,Disney created his most famous character,Mortimer Mouse, who we know today as Mickey. The mouse starred in a cartoon called Steamboat Willie, which was unusual because it involved the use of a sound track.Within the next few years,Disney invented many of his other characters.
The list of Disney’s animation successes is long and memorable. It includes Pinocchio,Dumbo,Bambi,Cinderella, and Peter Pan.Perhaps his most remarkable animated film is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.Created in 1937,it was an immediate success.Today, more than fifty years later,it is still one of the most popular films for children.

It is probably the strangest sport anyone has ever invented. And at first sight,it looks like the easiest.Competitors have to do two things. The first is to stand still. The second is to place their hands anywhere on the body of a car,and keep it there.
This is where things start getting difficult.Lots of people are doing the same thing. And the winner of the “handathon” contest is the person who can carry on doing it for the longest time. That person gets to own the car.
It still seems to be an easy thing to do.At the beginning it is.Anyone can stand still. But when the contest has been going for four or five days, standing still seems like the most difficult job in the world. And keeping the hand in place over this time becomes an act of serious attention. After a few days, the hand seems to belong to someone else—someone who wants to go home and get some sleep.
Competitors are allowed to take a five-minute break every hour to eat, drink or do whatever else is necessary. No one is allowed to lean on the car for support.Winners need to be able to show great powers of attention. They also need to be able to develop special skills.
Maybe the popularity of the handathon is due to the fact that it is not necessary to be a trained athlete to enter.Entrants in the Longview handathon certainly don’t seem to do much preparation. Most say they will prepare by “getting lots of sleep”.Others say they will “eat healthy food” or “pray for success”.The whole event gives ordinary people the chance to do something interesting and win something in the end.Handathons are competitions, but there is little rivalry(敌对) between competitors. They help each other out and keep each other’s spirits up.People who drop out early return with food, drink and encouragement.
1. The reason why the sport is called “handathon” is that competitors ________.
A.cover a long distance
B.keep hands in place for long
C.wave hands as long as possible
D.do the same thing as in a marathon
2. What ability is likely to be needed most in a handathon?
A.Standing without any support.
B.Not leaning on the car.
C.Eating and drinking in five minutes.
D.Having strong powers of attention.
3. Why is handathon popular?
A.Someone can win with special training.
B.It doesn’t need to make any preparation.
C.Anyone who is interested can join in it.
D.People get along well with each other in it.
4. What is the writer’s opinion about handathon?
A.It is not as easy as it looks at first.
B.It is the easiest of all sports.
C.It can purify people’s spirits.
D.It is not good competing in a handathon.

There were smiling children all the way.Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang.Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia.I was moved.
I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car,so this was the first time I was on a train.I did not particularly relish the long train journey and had brought along a dozen magazines to read and reread.I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face.I sighed and sat down to read my Economics.
It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia.Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore,so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past.As we went beyond the city,I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight.Immediately I came alive;I decided to wave back.
From then on my journey became interesting.I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me.Even the trees were smiling.I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.
The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry.I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3∶00 p.m.Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth.I looked at the people all around me.They all looked beautiful. When my uncle arrived with a smile,I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug(拥抱).I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his weather-beaten face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.
I looked forward to the return journey.

BEAVERTON,Ore.—Jaime Nared is nearly 6-foot-1 and blessed with Michael Jordan-style skills. In games, the 12-year-old can more than hold her own against the boys, dropping three-pointers and sometimes scoring 30 points or more.
And there, according to her coach, lies the problem.
She’s so good,Michael Abraham said;she makes the boys look like scrubs(灌木丛).So she has been told she can no longer play on boys teams at The Hoop,a private Beaverton basketball facility that runs a league in which Abraham’s teams compete.
The trouble started last month, when some parents told The Hoop management they didn’t like Jaime playing with the boys.Hoop officials notified Abraham that Jaime, after years on one of his boys teams, was barred.Neal Franzer,The Hoop’s director of operations, said on Thursday that parents were “adamant(固执的)” that their complaints have nothing to do with Jaime’s skills.
“They said the problem was the boys were playing differently against her because she was a girl,” he said.“They’d been taught to not push a girl, and the focus had shifted from playing basketball to noticing a girl was on the floor with them.”
Hoop officials e-mailed Abraham to remind him of the rules.Abraham,Jaime and her parents don’t buy it.“I think the complaints come from parents who don’t like seeing a girl that is good playing against their sons,” Abraham said.
Jaime, who said she “fell in love” with basketball when she was 8,likes the boys team because boys play a fast-paced game.
Jaime’s mom,Reiko Williams, said the issue boiled over after a particular game.“She scored 30 points,” Williams said.“I remember one play. She stole the ball and made a behind-the-back pass to a teammate. He missed the lay-in,and she grabbed the rebound and put it in.I think it was just too much for some of those parents.”
60.Michael Abraham is________.
A.Jaime Nared’s coach
B.Jaime Nared’s father
C.Jaime Nared’s teammate
D.The Hoop’s director of operations
61.Jaime Nared’s problem lies in that________.
A.she can’t keep pace with the boys
B.she takes advantage of the boys
C.she plays even better than her boy teammates
D.she doesn’t obey the rules of basketball
62.How did the boys feel when playing against Jaime Nared?
A.Proud. B.Angry. C.Interested. D.Ashamed.
63.The parents wanted Jaime Nared barred from boys’teams because________.
A.Jaime Nared had better skills than the boys
B.Jaime Nared was too rude on the court
C.the boys can’t get focused on playing with her
D.the boys didn’t like to play with a girl
C
Parents are often amazed at how fast their child grows and develops.New research has determined that the ability to quantify may develop much sooner than most parents realize.
Kristy vanMarle, professor of the University of Missouri, has determined that contrary to what previous studies have shown, infants(婴儿)are able to quantify substances(物质)—like sand or water—as early as 10 months. As long as the difference between the two substances is large enough, infants will choose the larger amount, especially when it comes to food.
With the assistance of her team researchers, vanMarle tested the quantifying skills of babies by presenting them with two cups:one containing a small amount of food, and one containing a larger amount.Consistently, the babies chose the larger amount.
“Several studies throughout the last 15 years have shown that infants are very good at telling how many objects they see;however, infants don’t seem to count things like water or sand.”vanMarle said.“What we’re saying is that they can quantify substances,it’s just much harder. The infants can see how much food goes into each cup and compare that in their memories. They decide which amount is larger, and they almost always select the larger one.”
“This information further refutes(驳斥)the long-held idea that babies know nothing of the world.”vanMarle said.
“Since psychologists have begun studying infants with sensitive measures,we’ve discovered a lot of early abilities.I think for parents,it should be exciting to know that there’s somebody that has some fundamental and basic knowledge of the world, and that knowledge is guiding their development.”vanMarle said.
In the future, vanMarle says this kind of study could be linked to a child’s progress in math-related skills, although programs marketed to increase those abilities, such as “Baby Einstein”,still have mixed reviews when it comes to academic study.
64.The quantifying ability refers to the ability to ________.
A.choose between different substances
B.get much knowledge of the world
C.describe the quantity of something
D.obtain math-related skills
65.What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 4?

Neatness and personal cleanness have been around for ages and have become an important part of everyone’s daily routine. You might think that all modern societies would have the same neatness and personal cleanness practices. After all, everybody will take baths. Most people do recognize the need for cleanness, which is the basis for health.Neatness practices include all the little things people do to make themselves look their best, such as combing their hair and putting on make-up.However,while most modern people agree that these things are important, people in different cultures take care of themselves in different ways.
There used to be an old joke in America that people should take a bath once a week, whether they need or not.In fact, though,Americans generally take a bath or more commonly,a shower every day.But in contrast to some cultures, most Americans get their shower in the morning so that they can start the day fresh.Americans are known for having very sensitive noses. In America, body smell is socially unacceptable. For that reason,Americans consider it a must to use special lotion (护肤液) to prevent the smell.Ladies often add a touch of perfume.Men may spray aftershave cream or manly-smelling perfume.
Some of the cultural varieties in neatness practices result from physical differences between races.Whereas many Asian men have little facial hair,Westerners have a lot.As a result, most American men spend some time each day shaving or tidying their facial hair to keep it nice.American women,on the other hand, generally prefer not to be hairy at all.
Americans put great value on both neatness and personal cleanness. For some people, taking care of themselves has become almost a religion. As the old saying goes,“Cleanness is next to godliness.” Whether or not being clean and neat-looking brings one closer to God,it certainly at least brings one closer to others.Americans look down on people who don’t take care of themselves,or who “let themselves go”.
68.We can infer from the first paragraph that________.
A.everyone takes baths daily to get a nice look
B.people have the same neatness practices today
C.neatness practices may be affected by cultures
D.neatness means combing hair and doing make-up
69.Americans have a bath in the morning to________.

in________.

Good_morning,everyone!It’s_known_that_our_school_will_choose_some_students_to_attend_the_model_contest.
In_my_opinion,it’s a good idea for us students to enter for the model contest. Some of us are fond of fashion and modeling. We want to be fashion designers or professional models. We may well seize the opportunity to make our dreams come true.Besides, not only do we show our figures and intelligence on the stage, but we also learn how to be independent, how to behave in society and what to do for others while preparing for the competition. However, some of our parents think it possible for us to miss lessons and fall behind in study. No!On the contrary, being student contestants or prize winners,we are encouraged to study even harder and make rapid progress.
