An old man and his wife used to live on the second floor.Bill’s mother and the old lady were good friends.Unfortunately the old lady died last month. Her husband could not live alone,so he had his grandson move over and live with him.
The grandson has become a problem to all the neighbours, especially to Bill’s family. The walls of the building are thin and he is noisy.Bill is used to peace and quiet but the young man likes to listen to the radio late at night.Sometimes his friends visit his house and they make a lot of noise. That is too much for Bill’s family.
Bill’s mother once asked the old man politely if he was able to sleep well at night, but obviously the man didn’t understand what she meant. If he did and spoke to his grandson, the young man obviously didn’t listen, since things haven’t changed any.Everyone in Bill’s family agrees that something must be done though they don’t want to hurt the kind old man.

One of the simplest and the most effective forms of communication involves nothing more than the movement of facial muscles. What am I talking about?Smiling!Everyone understands what a smile means, and everyone also understands what a frown means. In fact, these two basic facial expressions can be recognized across countries, across the world and across the globe, regardless of the language spoken or the culture lived in.
Hugs are so beautiful! When you give someone a hug or someone comes up and gives you a hug, this simple act of a hug can “speak” volumes about how much you care for the other person, how much love you want to share with the other person, how much you have missed the other person. This hug has so much to say,and yet there never has to be any words spoken. And,who needs to say the words “yes” or “no” when a movement of the head says the same thing. These basic examples show just how powerful body language can be.Just knowing how to read and use body language effectively, makes it really easy to see why it is not always a bad thing to be lost for words.
Body language in the world of love is a very common thing and sometimes the only thing. And,most of the time, body language is the very first words “spoken” before any words are.The old saying is “love at first sight”,not “love at first word”.Across a crowded room, their eyes meet and linger,he winks at her,and she raises an eyebrow. The connection is made without any words needed. These displays of body language say it all.In fact, sometimes they can say more than words can.
5.How many kinds of body language are mentioned in the first two paragraphs?
A.Two. B.Three.
C.Four. D.Five.
6.The author thinks it isn’t a bad thing to be lost for words because ________.
A.silence is usually better than words
B.body language can save much time
C.body language can be more effective
D.too many words may bring some trouble
7.The last paragraph talks about body language used ________.
A.between two people in love
B.between two good friends
C.between family members
D.between close relatives
8.Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.Many words are contained in a hug.
B.Smiling means the same thing all over the world.
C.Words are not necessary in the world of romance.
D.“Yes” or “no” are usually replaced by body language.

When was the last time someone did something unexpectedly nice for you?Not someone you knew, but a total stranger? It’s happened to me a few times, but two instances really stand out.
A few years ago,I was dining out with a person who kept going on and on about himself, completely unaware of the fact that I was sitting there in misery(痛苦).It wasn’t his company that disappointed me.I was recovering from a bad grade in my study.I could have collapsed(崩溃) in tears right there at the table.
When we picked up the check, the waitress said,“Your meal was already paid for.”My friend and I didn’t have a clue how it happened. Then I remembered a man coming in out of the corner of my eye.He was dressed in mostly white, sat down at the bar,had a glass of wine, stayed for maybe ten minutes, and then left. The waitress said,“Yes,the gentleman who was in here a while ago paid for you.”
Just last year,I was running a half-marathon.With just 0.1 miles to go,I was out of gas.Runners call it “hitting the wall”;I thought I couldn’t move another muscle.Out of nowhere,a teenager jogged up next to me and said,“What’s your name, sweetie?Jennifer?Okay,Jennifer, let’s go!Come on!It’s just around the corner! You can do it!”And he ran with me until I picked up my pace.I found him at the finish line to thank him for the encouragement only to learn he wasn’t even supposed to be in the race that day.He was running in place of someone else.

Exam results do not matter to future employers as much as candidates(应试者)who are “job-ready” and have a broad range of life, work and social skills, business groups say.
While parents and students alike worry about school grades and exam results, employers are looking for something that sets a potential employee apart from the average job seeker.
Business Council of Australia spokesman Scott Thompson said that while education was important,it was the skills learned through extracurricular(课外的)activities that really mattered to an employer.
“Employers are increasingly focused on graduates who are job-ready,” Mr.Thompson said.“They’re looking at the sorts of,what we call,‘employability skills’that graduates can bring.Part of that comes from quality education, but those who have vocational experience that can be useful for the jobs they’re looking for;they’re going to be considered very favorably.”
Mr.Thompson said young people—whether they’re in high school or university—need to get extra skills on their resumes(个人简历) if they want an advantage over their peers(同龄人).
“As a general principle, graduates and young people who are looking to enter the workforce should think about the sorts of employability skills they’re going to need to meet the requirements of jobs they’ll be looking at in the years ahead,” he said.“So if they can bring those skill sets to the table, they should be well positioned to succeed in the job market.”
Business SA chief executive Peter Vaughan agreed, saying that while the importance of education should not be downplayed, experience was often the deal maker in the employment process.
“Education is a major factor in all kinds of employment, and we cannot underestimate(低估) its importance, but having experience in the workforce provides invaluable assistance and guidance to students and allows employers to recruit school leavers with skills relevant to the workplace,” he said.

C.Practical work and life skills.
D.Good educational background.

Barack Obama,Lady Gaga and Steve Jobs—what do they have in common? They are,of course, all Americans. And according to a survey by social networking site badoo.com,they all best illustrate(举例说明) the word “cool”.
But just what does it mean to say someone is “cool”?Most would answer that it is something to do with being independent-minded and not following the crowd.
Yale University art professor Robert Farris Thompson says that the term “cool” goes back to 15th century West African philosophy(哲学).“Cool” relates to ideas of grace(优雅) under pressure.
“In Africa,”he writes,“coolness is a positive quality which combines calmness, silence, and life.”
The modern idea of “cool” developed largely in the US in the period after World War Ⅱ.“Post-war ‘cool’ was in part an expression of war-weariness...it went against the strict social rules of the time,”write sociologists Dick Pountain and David Robins in Cool Rules:Anatomy of an Attitude.
But it was the American actor James Dean who became the symbol for “cool” in the hugely successful 1955 movie Rebel Without a Cause.Dean plays a tough guy who disobeys his parents and the authorities. He always gets the girl, smokes cigarettes, wears a leather jacket and beats up bullies(欺凌弱小者).In the movie,Dean showed what “cool” would mean to American young people for the next 60 years.
Today the focus of “cool” has changed to athletics stars.Often in movies about schools, students gain popularity on the athletics field more than in the classroom. This can be seen quite clearly in movies like Varsity Blues and John Tucker Must Die.
But many teenagers also think being smart is cool.Chess and other thinking games have been becoming more popular in schools.
“Call it the Harry Potterization of America—a time when being smart is the new cool,” writes journalist Joe Sunnen.
