In today’s Ireland,it seems hard to imagine the grim days of the 19th century when so many of the population starved,or that,in those days, many poor people had no clue how to prepare any food other than boil a potato.Nowadays,it is quite possible to eat both well and heartily all over the island.
Tourism has made a vast difference to the standards of cooking in Ireland.Until recently, there was hardly any tradition of eating out in many districts, except perhaps on very few occasions at a local hotel.Patterns of diet were old-styled,based firmly on ‘meat and two vegetables’ (somewhat overcooked),potatoes (of course) and large quantities of dairy produce. Now things are very different.Tourist demands for predictable, inexpensive fast food are met,as everywhere, with hamburgers and pizzas—a better bet being fish and chips. But more sophisticated tastes have introduced whole foods and vegetarian restaurants (almost unheard of before),and a vast number of new restaurants, often French in style, have opened in the main tourist centers.Food “events” such as Kinsale’s Gourmet Festival or Galway’s Oyster Festival attract large numbers of visitors and reflect the new interest in food.
Whatever Irish cooking lacks in finesse(精细),it nearly always makes up for in plenty, and ingredients(成分) are of a high quality.Home-grown produce includes rich dairy foods, beef, lamb and pork, and a great variety of seafood. One of its great specialties is soda bread. It is made with buttermilk and is served fresh and warm with every meal.Recently there has been a return to simple Irish foods such as stews(炖菜) and potato dishes.
One of the best-value meals in Ireland is breakfast.A “traditional Irish breakfast” is a plateful of bacon and eggs with soda and potato breads.Accommodation rates are nearly always quoted with a full breakfast included,so you might as well eat enough to keep you going all day and get your money’s worth!
1. What was Irish food like until quite recently?
A.It was very conservative and uninteresting.
B.It was influenced by French cooking.
C.It was very unhealthy.
D.It was plentiful.
2. How has Irish food improved in recent years?
A.There are more French restaurants.
B.Food produce is fresher.
C.There are more kinds.
D.Food is more expensive.
3. How does the passage describe Irish cooking today?
A.It is exciting and interesting.
B.It is boring and overcooked.
C.It is plentiful and simple.
D.It is good-looking and tastes bad.
4. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Eating out at weekends is traditional in most parts of Ireland.
B.Today most Irish people prefer fast food to the traditional Irish cooking.
C.Nowadays French-style restaurants are quite common in tourist centers.
D.Many Irish people are vegetarians and grow their own vegetables.

In 2001,British Prime Minister,Tony Blair said,“We celebrate the diversity (多样性) in our country, get strength from the cultures and the races that go to make up Britain today.”
People from all cultures and races can be found in every corner of Britain and each person in his or her own way has contributed to making Britain the place it is today.
If you walk down a street in Britain, especially in the bigger cities, you will usually see people with different hair, skin and eye colors. They may have white, brown or black skin and blonde, brown, black or red hair, with blue, black, brown or green eyes. Many of the people you will see will be British people but they all look different because the people of Britain are a mixed race.
Britain is and has always been a mixed race society.Early in the British history they were invaded by Romans,Saxons,Vikings and Normans armies and later Africans were brought to Britain by force in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as slaves or servants.Over the years, thousands of people have been forced by persecution (迫害) or hunger to leave France,Ireland,Russia, and other countries, and have settled in Britain.
About 8% of the population of Britain today are people from other cultures and races. That is 4.6 million people.According to a BBC report in September 2005,immigration (移民) made up more than half of Britain’s population growth from 1991 to 2001.The Guardian newspaper reported in 2007 that the number of immigrants to the UK was 145,000 a year.

The Tower of London was originally built by William the Conqueror, following his successful invasion of England. The Tower of London is perhaps better known as a prison. The prisoners would be brought, via the river, from Westminster where they would have been tried.Crowds would wait on the river bank to find out the verdict (裁决) to see if they would be treated to the spectacle of a public execution (处决).The executioner, with his long sharp axe, would stand behind the accused on the boat.If the accused was guilty he would point his axe towards the victim and if not guilty he would point it away.People knew that if the accused was guilty there would be a public execution 48 hours later.
In the centre of the Tower of London is the famous White Tower. It is the oldest part of the fortress. Many people have been locked in the Tower,or the Bloody Tower, for religious beliefs or suspected treason (叛国罪).Famous prisoners included Anne Boleyn,ElizabethⅠand Walter Raleigh.ElizabethⅠwas held in the Tower as a prisoner for two months by the order of her half sister,Queen Mary.Queen Mary felt that her position was being threatened by Elizabeth,so she imprisoned her in the Tower.
Ravens (渡鸦) have lived at the Tower of London for hundreds of years. The presence of the ravens is traditionally believed to protect the Tower. There is a legend that if the ravens leave the Tower of London, the White Tower will fall and a great disaster will happen.

Next time a customer comes to your office, offer him a cup of coffee. And when you’re doing your holiday shopping online, make sure you’re holding a large glass of iced tea.The physical sensation(感觉) of warmth encourages emotional warmth, while a cold drink in hand prevents you from making unwise decisions—those are the practical lesson being drawn from recent research by psychologist John A.Bargh.
Psychologists have known that one person’s perception(感知) of another’s “warmth” is a powerful determiner in social relationships.Judging someone to be either “warm” or “cold” is a primary consideration, even trumping evidence that a “cold” person may be more capable.Much of this is rooted in very early childhood experiences,Bargh argues, when babies’ conceptual sense of the world around them is shaped by physical sensations, particularly warmth and coldness.Classic studies by Harry Harlow, published in 1958,showed monkeys preferred to stay close to a cloth “mother” rather than one made of wire, even when the wire “mother” carried a food bottle.Harlow’s work and later studies have led psychologists to stress the need for warm physical contact from caregivers to help young children grow into healthy adults with normal social skills.
Feelings of “warmth” and “coldness” in social judgments appear to be universal.Although no worldwide study has been done,Bargh says that describing people as “warm” or “cold” is common to many cultures, and studies have found those perceptions influence judgment in dozens of countries.
To test the relationship between physical and psychological warmth,Bargh conducted an experiment which involved 41 college students.A research assistant who was unaware of the study’s hypotheses(假设),handed the students either a hot cup of coffee,or a cold drink,to hold while the researcher filled out a short information form. The drink was then handed back. After that, the students were asked to rate the personality of “Person A” based on a particular description. Those who had briefly held the warm drink regarded Person A as warmer than those who had held the iced drink.
“We are grounded in our physical experiences even when we think abstractly,”says Bargh.
64.According to Paragraph 1,a person’s emotion may be affected by ________.
A.the visitors to his office
B.the psychology lessons he has
C.his physical feeling of coldness
D.the things he has bought online
65.The author mentions Harlow’s experiment to show that ________.
A.adults should develop social skills
B.babies need warm physical contact
C.caregivers should be healthy adults
D.monkeys have social relationships
66.In Bargh’s experiment,the students were asked to ________.
A.evaluate someone’s personality
B.write down their hypotheses
C.fill out a personal information form
D.hold coffee and cold drink alternatively
67.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Drinking for Better Social Relationships
B.Experiments of Personality Evaluation
C.Developing Better Drinking Habits
D.Physical Sensations and Emotions

Tens of thousands of students in universities across Britain have been caught cheating in exams and coursework, and the trend is on the rise, according to an investigation.
Over the past three years, more than 45,000 students at 80 institutions have been questioned before college authorities and found guilty of “academic misconduct” ranging from bringing crib sheets or mobile phones into exams to paying private firms to write essays for them. Some 16,000 cases were recorded in the past year alone,as university chiefs spent millions on software to identify work reproduced from published material,or simply cut from the Internet.
But officials warned they were fighting a losing battle against hi-tech advances.Tessa Byars,a manager at Anglia Ruskin University Students’ Union, warned that advances in technology had made it “nearly impossible” for universities to keep up.
“It’s only going to get worse,”she said,“From next September we expect to see cheating incidents rise. The introduction of tuition fees will increase pressure and anxiety to get a good degree. They are all worried about their employment prospects (前景).”
University bosses blame the financial crisis for raising the risks in higher education, making many students do anything to secure good grades.A number of experts claim that the policy of increasing access to higher education has left thousands of young people starting university without all the practical and intellectual skills required.
Ministers have now been asked to step in to help colleges fight against increasingly advanced methods of cheating, particularly agencies that produce essays for students for money.Lord Willis,a former head teacher, said ministers must gain control over the essay-writing companies whose products are almost impossible to detect. He said ministers should record all companies offering “professional advice” on writing essays.“Something needs to be done to bring them into line,”he said.
68.According to Tessa Byars,________.
A.it is more and more difficult to fight against cheating
B.schools should learn to make use of advances in technology
C.advances in technology have more disadvantages than advantages
D.schools can depend on new advances in technology to fight against cheating
69.What’s a disadvantage of increasing access to higher education for universities?
A.Putting pressure on teachers.
B.Causing higher tuition fees.
C.Introducing unqualified students.
D.Leaving thousands of young people unemployed.
70.What should be done by ministers according to Lord Willis?
A.Asking companies to give professional advice to students.
B.Having some control over essay-writing companies.
C.Closing all essay-writing companies.
D.Letting essay-writing companies help fight against cheating.
