Injected poisons enter the body through bites or stings of bees, scorpions (蝎子),spiders, snakes, and so on.
If someone is stung by a bee, remove the stinger by scraping it away from the skin with your fingernail or a plastic card.Wash the area with soap and water, cover it to keep it clean, and apply ice to reduce pain and swelling. If the victim begins to have trouble breathing,he or she may be experiencing an allergic (过敏的) reaction and his or her body is going into shock. You must call EMS (Emergency Medical Service) immediately.
Only a few species of scorpions are known to cause deaths.Scorpions live in dry regions of the southwestern US and Mexico, under rocks, logs and certain trees. They are most active at night. If you are stung by a scorpion,it will be wise for you to call EMS unless you are sure that the one that bit you is not poisonous.
Only two kinds of spiders in the US can make you seriously ill or kill you. They prefer dark, remote places, and bites usually occur on the arms or hands of people searching in dark garages or in wood piles.
Symptoms of spider bites and scorpion stings are:feeling sick, throwing up,having difficulty breathing or swallowing, sweating, severe pain in the bite/sting area,a mark indicating a bite/sting,and swelling of the area.If you suspect you have been bitten by a spider or stung by a scorpion, wash the wound, apply ice to the area, and call EMS immediately.
Only four kinds of snakes found in the US are poisonous. If you are bitten by a snake, wash the wound and cover the area, keeping it lower than the heart if possible.Don’t apply ice, don’t cut the wound, and don’t apply a bandage. And call EMS immediately.

Talk to an expert.
Shoe salesmen and personal trainers can study your stride(步伐) and the shape of your feet.__4__

第三部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
What do you do with people who ask you to do something that you’d rather not do?“Do me a favor, will you?I don’t have anyone to look after the dog.”“What do you mean you don’t have time to help me paint the house? You’re on vacation.”And so on.
An invitation for help is not like appearing in court.People who don’t want to attend events to which they are invited have the choice of refusing.“I’m sorry, but I won’t be able to attend.”That’s all that is necessary.
But it is not easy to do so.Why is it common to give in to others’ demands? Why do so many people feel bad about saying no?Human beings are social animals.Helping another human being is wired into us and further reinforced through cultural upbringing. In other words,we can’t help but want to help a crying baby,a friend bitten by bad luck, and so on.And our parents raised us to be kind and helpful.
But there are limits, especially in today’s world where there are so many demands on one’s attention. It is normal for one to feel sorry for another, but that doesn’t mean you have to fix his or her problem. The issue here is setting limits.
The way to refuse to do something one doesn’t like to do is to refuse.“No.Thank you.”“No.I’m so sorry.”“No.I simply can’t.”“Thank you for asking, but I’m afraid it’s impossible.”Repeat these phrases as often as necessary to wear out the attacker. It is a mistake to give a reason for refusing. As soon as you try to explain, you invite debate about why you won’t do it in the first place.Make your refusals polite but firm. And you will find yourself better able to protect your private time.
56.By Paragraph 2,the writer mainly wants to tell us that ________.
A.people like asking others to help them nowadays
B.refusing other people’s invitation for help is simple
C.we have the choice of refusing other people’s request for help

57.In the writer’s opinion,when we’re helping someone,________.
A.we should do whatever he/she requires
B.we shouldn’t agree to all his/her demands
C.we should do our best only when there is a reward
D.we should ask him/her not to ask for help next time
58.According to the passage, what should you do if you want to turn down someone’s request

59.How does the writer lead to the topic of the passage?

External bleeding.Apply direct pressure.Place a clean, folded cloth over the injured area and firmly apply pressure. If blood soaks through,do not remove it.Instead, cover that cloth with another one and continue to apply pressure to the wound for 7-10 minutes. If the bleeding is from the ear, place a clean bandage over the ear,lay the victim on his side, and allow the blood to drain out through the bandage.
Elevate the injury.Position the wounded part of the body above the level of the heart if possible while you apply direct pressure.
Know the pressure points. If direct pressure and elevation don’t sufficiently slow the bloodflow, find a pressure point.Large arteries(动脉) found close to the skin’s surface supply blood to the head and to each arm and leg.The most common pressure points used during the first aid are located in the upper arms and in the creases above the upper legs.Apply pressure to the closest pressure point to the wound so that the artery is pressed between your fingers and the bone directly behind the artery. If using the pressure point on a leg,you may need to use the heel of your hand instead of your fingers.
Resort to a tourniquet(止血带,压脉器).On very rare occasions everything listed above may fail.To prevent the victim from dying, you should apply a tourniquet.Once a tourniquet is applied,it should not be loosened or removed until the victim has reached medical help.Use a tourniquet only if everything listed above has failed. If you use a tourniquet, write down somewhere on the victim the time when it was applied,so medical persons will know how long it has been in place.
60.According to the passage,if a person is wounded and bleeding, you should________.
A.cover the wound with a clean, folded cloth and press it
B.spread some salve (药膏) on the wound

61.If blood soaks through the cloth, you should______.
A.change a clean one immediately
B.wash the wound at once
C.press the wound firmly with your hand
D.cover the one with another one and press it

A.four B.three C.two D.one
63.According to the passage,we know that________.
A.it is better to put the injured part above the head to stop bleeding
B.large arteries deep in the muscle supply blood to the head and to each arm and leg
C.we should use a tourniquet first to stop bleeding
D.the most common pressure points lie in the upper arms and in the creases above the upper

Studies show that a drug called Truvada can prevent HIV infections. The pill is taken once a day.Studies showed it was 90% effective when people took it every day.It was only half as effective when people did not take it every day.
At present,in the United States, the drug is only approved for use as a treatment for people already infected with HIV,the virus that causes AIDS.Now a government advisory committee (顾问委员会) says Truvada should become the first drug approved for use to prevent HIV.
Mitchell Warren, head of the HIV prevention group AVAC,explains that Truvada is a combination pill.He said,“It’s made up of two different antiretrovirals—tenofovir and emtricitabine. And those two drugs had already been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) a number of years ago separately, and then about eight years ago they were approved as the combination drug. But all of those approvals were only related to the use of the drug for treating people who are already infected with HIV.”
The advisory committee held a 12-hour hearing on May 10th to consider the evidence. The committee urged the FDA to approve the drug for use by those who are considered at high risk of getting infected.Mr.Warren says Truvada offers hope for a new way to fight HIV.
The manufacturer of Truvada,Gilead, would have to produce what is known as a risk evaluation (评估).This would be a plan to help ensure the safe and effective use of Truvada. The plan would include a lot of training for health care providers.
Some doctors say Truvada is a step toward ending the threat from AIDS.Truvada at present sells for about 14,000 dollars a year. The drug would cost much less in developing countries, possibly several hundred dollars a year. But that could still be too high for some countries.
64.What is the main idea of this passage?
A.The US is considering approving Truvada to prevent HIV.
B.A new drug called Truvada has been found to prevent HIV.
C.A drug has been approved to treat people infected with HIV.
D.A US government advisory committee is working hard against HIV.
65.What do we know about Truvada?
A.At present,it is used only in the United States.
B.It is made up of more than two different antiretrovirals.
C.It has been used to treat people with HIV for years.
D.It can severely harm one’s body if he/she takes it daily.
66.We can infer that before approving Truvada for use by people without HIV,the FDA has to
________.
A.find out if the drug is welcomed by HIV patients
B.provide health care providers with a lot of training
C.wait for several years to see if the drug is harmless
D.refer to a risk evaluation done by the manufacturer of Truvada
67.The last paragraph tells us that people in developing countries ________.
A.will show no interest in Truvada
B.might be unable to afford Truvada
C.might find it hard to find Truvada
D.will not know how to take Truvada
D
You’ve probably heard of a lot about the Internet, but what is it?
The Internet is a computer network that uses the telephone system to connect together millions of computers around the world.
Maybe that isn’t very exciting but once you’re connected to the Internet, there are lots of different things you can do.You can send electronic messages or “e-mails” to your friends (as long as they’re on the Internet, too),or you can sort through all kinds of information on something called the World Wide Web(www世界信息网).
You don’t need to know how the Internet works in order to use it,but if you understand the basics,it may help you work out many technical problems you have—and of course you can help your friends with your Net knowledge!
You may think that your telephone is just for talking. But as long as you have the equipment, you can use a telephone line to send computer data as well as sounds. If you connect your computer with the telephone system it can receive information from, and send information to other computers (as long as they are connected with the telephone system, too).
Because there is not an organization which operates the Internet,no one exactly knows how many people are connected to it.It’s thought that there could be 60 million people on the Net,connected up to over 15 million computers!
68.You can keep in touch with your friends by e-mail.The condition is that________.
A.they also have their own telephones
B.they also have their own computers
C.you have already known their telephone numbers
D.they are also connected to the Internet
69.According to the writer,it’s better to________.
A.work out its technical problems besides using the Internet
B.use the Internet besides working out its technical problems
C.sort through all kinds of information on www
D.help your friends with your Net knowledge
70.With both your computer and telephone, you can________.
A.see the other’s face while calling up
B.receive information from other computers
C.send information to other computers
D.both B and C

A little kid fell into the lake while she was playing with her little friends. They were too frightened to know what to do next.Luckily,a teenager girl and a pretty lady passed by and saw the drowning girl. The lady dived into the water and took the kid to the bank with difficulty and at the same time, the teenager girl called the Medical Emergency Center in time. Before the ambulance came, the lady who proved to be a nurse later performed first aid to the kid.A few minutes later, the kid was taken into the nearest hospital at once and was saved. The story is a good example in which first aid makes a big difference. From it,we know it is necessary to know basic first aid skills so that we can be better prepared for some emergencies.
