When we asked him what reminds him to do this simple, small but devoted act of service, he shrugged his shoulders and said, “It’s just something small I do so that the leftover bread doesn’t go into the rubbish and the birds get food.”

It was last January, when I’d just finished a charity and was on the train back home, that I put down my phone and started writing thank-you notes to people who had helped.
When I got off the train, I felt amazingly good. The next day, I wrote more thank-you notes and the same feeling of happiness hit me again. I suddenly had the idea: Why not keep on doing this for every day of the year
To keep on task, I decided to pick out a different theme for each month. January was charity.
February would be 2 , I decided. And I thought of a number of names right away: the owner of our local bookstore, who let me and my little son in before the store opened and offered to play his favorite songs; our babysitter, who dropped off a bag of old board games for our kids to play; …
While writing the notes, I realized how often I had spent my time on the phone moving from app to app, appreciating (欣赏) other people’s lives. Writing thank-you notes allowed me the time to do something different, paying more attention to my own life.
In the following months, I wrote to my friends, doctors, teachers and parenting role models. In July, my “food” month, I wrote to Julie, who used to cook at my favorite restaurant. It went like this:
Dear Julie,
I’ve been finding myself missing you lately. Thank you for hosting and cooking beautiful and thoughtful food. Jake and I will never forget when you sent out biscuits shaped into the number VI for our sixth anniversary ( 周年纪念日). We talk about it every year.
Thank you. We miss you.
Love,
Gina
I was happy to receive a note back from her. Julie replied, “I don’t think I’ve ever received such a touching letter before. I’m going through a hard time right now, and this helps.”
On December 31, I wrote my last card — to Jake, my husband, and our two kids. And I took a picture of us, so I could remember the feeling welling up inside me. Gratitude.
( )4. How did Julie most probably feel after reading the note from Gina
A. Shy and surprised. B. Pleased and relaxed.
C. Nervous and excited. D. Moved and encouraged.
( )5. Which is the most suitable word for 2
A. friends B. relatives C. neighbours D. strangers
( )6. What did Gina get by doing her task according to the passage
A. Many thanks from her neighbors. B. More time to appreciate her own life.
C. More help from people around her. D. Happy moments to be with her friends.

Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center drew a map of brain changes after a year of aerobic(有氧的) exercise and discovered an important process: Exercise increases blood flow into two key areas of the brain connected with memory.
The study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, showed this blood flow can help even older people with memory problems. The finding could guide future Alzheimer's(阿尔茨海默) disease research, according to UT Southwestern Medical Center.
In the study researchers followed 30 people who were 60 or older and had memory problems. Half experienced a year of aerobic exercise while the other half did stretches. “We’ve shown that even when your memory starts to drop, you can still do something about it by adding aerobic exercise to your lifestyle,” said Binu Thomas, a senior research scientist of UT Southwestern Medical Center who led the study. “The aerobic exercise group showed a 47% improvement in some memory scores after a year; the other group showed slight change. Brain imaging(成像) of the aerobic exercise group, taken while at rest at the beginning and end of the study, showed increased blood flew into the specific brain areas that played important roles in memory function.”
Many teams across the world are trying to decide if aerobic exercise might fight memory loss. Evidence(证据) is growing that it could at least play a small role in reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. For example, a 2018 study showed that people with lower fitness levels experienced faster retrogression of important nerve fibers(神经纤维) in the brain called white matter connected with memory.
“Blood flow in the brain connected with memory improvement is still a part of the puzzle, and we need to continue piecing it together," Thomas says. “But we’ve seen enough date to know that starting a fitness program can have lifelong advantages for our brains as well as our hearts.”
( )7. What is the study mainly about
A. Old people have memory problems. B. Exercise improves memory.
C. Aerobic workouts is good for people’s health. D. Alzheimer’s disease can be cured.
( )8. What happened to people after one-year aerobic exercise
A. Earlier memories were refreshed. B. Memory scores showed very small change.
C. Brain imaging remained the same. D. More blood flew into the areas connected with memory.
( )9. What does the underlined word “retrogression” mean in the fourth paragraph
A. The process of growing. B. The process of renewing.
C. The process of becoming stronger. D. The process of becoming weaker.
( )10. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. Further research work requires doing. B. More people experience memory loss.
C. Mystery of brain blood flow has been solved. D. Signs of memory loss can be discovered earlier.

Claude Monet’s paintings were quite different from the art styles that were popular in the 1870s France. Traditional artists always did their artwork in a studio and their paintings were realistic — they looked exactly like the real world. Claude Monet was part of a group of painters who were called Impressionists (印象派画家). Their paintings were light and a bit fuzzy — they gave an impression of what the real world looked like. Sometimes Impressionists worked outside, which was a very unusual thought in their time. Impressionism received its name from an early painting by Claude Monet titled Impression, Sunrise.
Knowing that trains were interesting subjects and represented modern progress, Claude Monet created a series of Impressionist paintings of trains from January to March of 1877. He worked on his paintings right on the train platform at the Gare Saint — Lazare, the train station on Saint Lazare Street. Although there were many train stations in Paris, this was the first train station built in Paris so it had historical significance.
Monet’s friend, Impressionist painter Pierre Auguste Renoir, told the following story to his sons about Claude Monet and painting the trains. Monet needed permission to spend time on the train platform and paint what he saw in his impressionistic style. One day Monet dressed himself in his very best suit along with a fine top hat, a good linen shirt and a silk tie. He appeared to be a wealthy gentleman while he really was a poor painter.
When he went towards the clerk at the train office, he presented his calling card which introduced him as Claude Monet, Painter. He asked to see the station master. The clerk quickly allowed this fine gentleman to enter the station master’s office. The station master was also impressed and gave Monet permission to paint on the train platform. The station master even kept trains from leaving on time so Monet could complete a scene even though passengers complained.
Was it all worthwhile Monet’s train scenes turned his career into a success and for the station master, made his train station famous until even now.
