The most lively days of spring have come. This year, the Spring Equinox (春分), the fourth of the 24 solar terms (节气), falls on March 20. It marks the point when daytime and night equally (平均地) divide the whole day.
After this day, daytime will last longer than night. Therefore, it is not only important in China, but also in many other countries around the world. Spring Equinox Day is a public holiday in Japan. In Iran, it is called “Nowruz”, which is also known as the Iranian New Year.
The Spring Equinox is the best time for going outside, admiring flowers and flying kites in China. There are also rituals (仪式) that have been kept over centuries, such as balancing eggs. The idea is that on Spring Equinox, Earth’s axis (轴) is perpendicular (垂直的) to the sun. So Earth is supposed to be more balanced on this day. It’s usually very difficult to balance an egg because the yolk (蛋黄) is off-center. But on Spring Equinox, it is believed that there are some special gravitational (引力的) forces that can help. However, this isn’t true. If you focus long enough, you can actually balance an egg on its end any day of the year. All you need is a lot of patience.
But balancing eggs is still a fun tradition for people. In some places, people paint the eggs in many colors and hold egg-balancing competitions. Do you want to give it a try

Reading is very important. World Book Day falls on April 23 every year. It encourages people, especially teenagers, to discover the pleasure of reading. It is also the day to honor great writers.
Many countries celebrate World Book Day. On that day, millions of school children can buy books at a much lower price than usual in any bookstore in England. It has been done every year since 1998. World Book Day is also celebrated in China. Young people should spend more time reading. Books can not change the world, but people can change the world by changing themselves through reading.
Reading helps us become more knowledgeable and smarter. Reading helps us to follow the latest developments of science and technology. Reading gives us information about other cultures and places in the world. Reading is also one of the most important ways to learn a foreign language like English. We all know that it is difficult to learn everything in the classroom, for example, the ways English people are living and working today can be learnt by reading.
Books, magazines, newspapers and other kinds of reading materials can help us to know more about the outside world. Therefore, it is necessary for us to spend time reading every day.

Many Chinese people will wonder what presents to get for their moms on Mother’s Day, but not many know Mother’s Day is actually a festival from foreign countries. Mother’s Day started in America and spread to China in the 1980s. Now it is widely accepted.
Why does a foreign festival become popular in China That’s probably because traditional Chinese culture always encourages love between parents and children. For example, the story of “Taste Medicine for Mother” tells us the filial(子女的) love of Emperor Wen of the Western Han Dynasty. His mother has been sick for three years. He often stayed up at her bedside and cared for her day and night. He tasted the medicine first before she drank it. The subject of “mother love” is also repeated in many Chinese ancient poems(诗), like “Song of the Parting Son(《游子吟》)” by Meng Jiao, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. Now this touching poem is still a must in the school textbooks. Children in China grow up with the education of filial love.
On special days, people often use roses or forget-me-nots to express love. People think carnations(康乃馨) are the perfect flowers for mothers around the world, but few of them know that China has its own for mothers — the tiger lily.
Love for mothers can have different ways of expression. What matters most is love, not the festival itself. What mothers truly want is perhaps just a simple expression of love from their children.

The aim of World Sleep Day is to celebrate the benefits of good and healthy sleep. Events involving discussions, presentations of educational materials and exhibitions take place around the world and online.
Sleep quality plays a key role in people’s health. The studies show that there’re lots of advantages if we always get enough sleep. We can be smarter, thinner, healthier and more cheerful. We’ll also have better skin, better memories adn longer lives. When you lose even one hour of sleep for any reason, it will influence your performance the next day.
In general, adults are thought to need at least eight hours of sleep a night, but a recent survey found that, only 21% of them really get a full eight hours of sleep. For teenagers, a healthy amount is about eight to nine hours per night. However, about 80% of middle school students don’t get enough sleep because they have too much schoolwork to do, or sometimes they spend most of their sleeping-time on games or TV.
27% of people throughout the world have sleep problems. Now there are over 80 kinds of sleep disorders, and most people know little about their danger. So, for our good life and work, it’s necessary for us to realize the importance of sleep and try to have a good sleep.

World No Tobacco (烟草) Day: Protect Our Youth
World No Tobacco Day falls on May 31st each year. It was started by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1988 to let more people know the harmful effects of smoking.
Two national smoking surveys, made by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention among junior high school students in 2014 and 2019, showed that cigarette(香烟) smokers were 2% fewer over the past five years. However, e-cigarettes have become more popular: the number of students who knew about e-cigarettes was 24.9% higher and e-cigarette smokers rose from 1.2% to 2.7%.
Researchers say that the key to smoking control is to keep children and teenagers from cigarettes and e-cigarettes. If people develop a smoking habit when they are young, they will more probably become lifetime smokers. What’s worse, those young people who don’t smoke are still often exposed to (暴露于) second-hand smoke, which is also dangerous to their health.
The 33rd World No Tobacco Day in 2020 focused on preventing young people from smoking. Smoking control researchers called on young people to stay away from cigarettes and e-cigarettes and keep a healthy lifestyle. In response, anti-smoking (反吸烟) activities, such as health lectures and speech contests, have been held in more and more junior high schools recently.
