Unit 3

A
My son Sam is 16 and autistic(自闭症).There’s a lot going on in that beautiful and brilliant mind of his, but even on a good day he can be easily at a loss. Throw in some diagnosed anxiety, an inability to read social cues(信号)and an unexpected change to his daily routine, and you have the way to deal with a very public meltdown(崩溃).
It was Sam’s very first day at high school. We’d set up a plan for how he’d get home: I’d pick him up outside the shop near his school at 3: 30 pm and I believed this was a perfect plan. Unknown to me, very bad weather was on its way and I was unable to warn him to take shelter.
With the combination of his dead phone battery and my dead car battery, I was running late and unable to communicate that to him. As a result, he was left alone and extremely frightened. He became very upset outside the shop, exactly where I’d told him to wait.
This was when a beautiful older Vietnamese lady not only went to check on him, but took him inside her shop, calmed him down, got my phone number from him and called me.
Five years later he continued to go into her shop every afternoon, bought a drink, had a chat and she sent him home with enough bread and rolls to feed a small nation.
Sam will graduate this year, and I’m increasingly feeling the need to drop by the shop to let this wonderful lady know that she has saved Sam, and that she has saved me. I’m not sure if I can communicate all of this, but at least I will get to thank her.
There are people I will not get to thank, though—the many kind strangers who have been there for Sam, And believe me. if you’re wondering if this world is a complete mess right now, I’m here to say that it is not.
So I guess this is a love letter to those of you who have helped a stranger out of the goodness of your heart. Please know that you are appreciated, that your beautiful heart and kindness are appreciated, and that, perhaps unknowingly, you have made a great difference in someone’s life.
21. What can we learn about Sam from the first paragraph

A. To express her thanks to kind people.
B. To remind us all to help autistic people.

The human body is designed to move. But modern lifestyles and office jobs rarely give us the chance to move around. As we know, we’re sitting while we’re eating; we sit in the car and we sit while we watch TV. And many of us sit for many hours at work.
New research shows that sitting less than three hours a day might extend your life by two years. Peter Katzmarzyk, a scientist at the University of Louisiana in the southern United States, says that sitting is ubiquitous in our lives, meaning it is something we do all the time, everywhere.
However, Mr. Katzmarzyk says that does not mean you can sit for the rest of your waking hours. He also says you may exercise often, “We can’t throw away physical activity. It’s extremely important. We have 60 years of research showing us that.”
Mr. Katzmarzyk and his colleagues are part of a new generation of researchers studying how sitting all day affects length of life. “Studies that have assessed the relationship between sitting and mortality(死亡率)or television viewing and mortality are very rare. There’s only been a few of them, actually five or six now, in the last four or five years.” They found that cutting television time to less than two hours a day could add one point four years to life.
Luckily, change is al coming some offices, especially in the design of desks. A “standing desk” lets people stand while they work. Another new design is called the “treadmill desk”. A treadmill is an exercise machine that lets you walk in one place. Even some U.S. schools are beginning to experiment with desks that are part bicycle to keep children moving. That’s one of the strategies that many companies are using now.
Mr. Katzmarzyk also says studying this problem has inspired his team to make a few changes in their own lives.
24. The underlined word “ubiquitous” is closest in meaning to _______.
A. dangerous B. impressive C. comfortable D. common
25. Which view agrees with the opinion of Mr. Katzmarzyk
A. Sitting long may help people live longer.
B. Exercise is important and don’t sit too long.
C. People are unaware of the harm of sitting too long.
D. Stopping watching TV is a necessary but hard task.
26. What does Mr. Katzmarzyk think of his study in Paragraph 4?
A. It’s been ignored by many scientists.
B. It’s a study that begins too late.
C. It’s an entirely new are of study.
D. It’s been a hot subject for scientists.
27. Why are the desks of all kinds designed for those who sit more
A. To give them more comfort.
B. To improve their work efficiency.
C. To offer them the chance to exercise.
D. To seek pleasure while working.
C
We live in a time when technology has enabled everyone to be a journalist. Yet not everyone has the proper training. Whether out of ignorance or out of a sense of honor, some of the journalism online has done a better job of changing public opinion than showing the whole truth.
Two recent stories are perfect reminders of the difference between the urge to change minds and basic journalism ethics(道德标准).
“A college kid took some birds from a nearby tree and was sentenced to 10 years in prison,” went a recent online headline from the Chinese Internet. The accompanying vote showed that 85 percent of respondents sided with the student. Some joked that most boys would be guilty of such a crime because everyone had stolen birds when they were children.
Left out of the original report was the fact that the birds in question were falcons, which are on the nation’s list of protected, endangered species. Birdwatchers also said that it was unlikely that Yan Xiaotian, the 21-year-old defendant, had found the 12 birds in one tree. For this particular species, he had to search a much larger area.
For me, the most important questions are: Did he know it was illegal before he took the birds and did he know that before he sold them
Follow-up reporting has found that the evidence showed that Yan knew what he was doing. The only point of uncertainty is the very first time he took the first birds when he could be unaware of their status and value. As a matter of fact, the prosecutor(公诉人)started out asking for a light punishment, but took a U-turn when data from Yan’s cellphone clearly showed that he had stolen them.
The punishment, while sounding harsh, followed the law almost to the letter. The court has since said it would review the case, a sign of giving in to public pressure.
Let’s look at the second story, which can be read as either “Elderly man had to walk in his shorts for hours in Sanya after his bike was taken by the city’s quasi-police(城管)” or “Retired official illegally parked his bike for a swim and made the city apologize and fire a low-paid city management staff member”.
Both played up(渲染)different parts of the same story. For me, Bi Guochang’s age and former official title are not relevant to the case. The key is whether he indeed parked his bike illegally and whether proper procedures were being followed by taking it away and making him get it back. Yet the reports focused on the image of an old man walking only in his shorts. He could have phoned his family for backup or taken a taxi home first before complaining, as most would do in that situation.
Such stories read like badly-written morality tales, with everything in black and white and a simple yes-or-no message. Real life is much more complicated. Reporters have to be neutral(中立的)and avoid taking sides too early.
28. Why was Yan Xiaotian sentenced to 10 years in prison
A. He took some birds from a nearby tree.
B. He searched a much larger area for birds.
C. He illegally took some falcons and sold them.
D. He took 12 birds without knowing they were falcons.
29. According to the passage, the writer implied that ________.
A. the judges should still follow the law strictly.
B. the punishment was too much for the student
C. the student didn’t get fair treatment from the judges
D. the court will re-sentence the student
30. Which of the following is the best title of the passage
A. Two Morality Stories
B. How to Be a Journalist
C. Unfair Punishment
D. Telling Truth or Taking Sides

Are supermarkets designed to persuade us to buy more When you enter a supermarket, the manager knows better than you: how you will behave — which way you will walk, where you will look, what will make you buy one product rather than another. When customers go into a shop, they naturally look to their left but move clockwise, towards the right. So supermarket entrances are usually on the left of the building. And the layout is designed to take shoppers around the store, aisle(通道)after aisle, from left to right. 31
Fresh fruit and vegetables are displayed near supermarket entrances. 32 Basic food like sugar and tea, are not put near each other. They are kept in different aisles so customers are taken past other attractive foods before they find what they want. In this way, shoppers are encouraged to buy products that they do not really want.
People walk quickly through narrow aisles, but they move slowly in wide aisles and give more attention to the products. One best-selling position for products is at the end of aisles, because shoppers slow down to turn into the next aisle. 33 Supermarkets are paid by food companies to put their products in each of these high-selling places.
34 While parents are waiting to pay, children reach for the sweets and put them in the trolley.
More is bought from a fifteen-foot display of one type of product(e. g. cereal, washing powder)than from a ten-foot one. 35 They do not like to buy from shelves with few products on them because they feel there is something wrong with those products that are there.
A. Another is on shelves at eye level.
B. Sweets are often placed at children’s eye level at the checkout.
C. There are always enough products prepared for customers in the supermarket.
D. Then shoppes will pay attention to all the products.
E. This gives the impression that only healthy food is sold in the shop.
F. Customers also buy more when shelves are full than when they are half empty.
G. Supermarkets are one of children’s favorite places and they are also big consumers.
31. ________ 32. ________ 33. ________ 34. ________ 35. ________

The British summer is extremely beautiful. Trees, flowers, birds and butterflies make the whole country look like a big garden. However, many British people have noticed that butterflies have been gradually disappearing from this fantastic scenery during the past several years. What has happened to them
Butterfly Conservation, a charity in the UK, is running a survey to help answer this question. The result is more serious than people expected. According to the survey, among 59 butterfly species found in Britain, more than three quarters of them are suffering a declining(减少的)population, including the most popular ones. What’s more, half of all butterfly species are in danger of dying out. Some common species such as the small Tortoiseshell butterfly and the Wall butterfly are dropping sharply. The latter cannot even be seen in many parts of central and southern England. The Blue butterfly, which was commonly seen in the south, has started colonizing(迁徙)to Edinburgh in the past few years.
The numbers of butterflies have dropped to a record low in the past several years largely because the summer in the UK is getting cooler. Fortunately, Britain is experiencing a long hot summer this year, compared to the last few summers. Butterfly Conservation believes the warm weather will bring some benefit to the butterflies. Besides, their habitat is getting worse, which is also an important reason for the declining.
The survey is still going on. The organizers hope the survey will help raise public awareness(意识)of the value of butterflies in the UK. Butterflies give an indication(显示)of the well-being(健康)of nature. Sir David Attenborough, president of Butterfly Conservation, said: “Large numbers of butterflies tell us that nature is going well. When they decline, it’s a warning that other wildlife will be soon going the same way.”

第二节 概要写作
One possible version:
In Britain, butterfly species have been slowly dying out in the last few years. A survey conducted by Butterfly Conservation has found three in four butterfly species in Britain are experiencing a decrease with half near extinction. This is mainly due to the cold British summer and their worsening habitat. The ongoing survey is meant to make people realize the importance of butterflies, which acts as an indicator of the health of nature.
