Title What’s in a name

Teaching Material Analysis What: The text is an expository article about how the history of the United Kingdom. Why: To introduce the history and culture of the United Kingdom to help students develop a better understanding of this country. How: This article points out that the name of the United Kingdom actually reflects its history
Students Analysis What they have known: Students have already known the name of country --- the United Kingdom. What they want to know: Students may have interest in knowing how the name of this country came into being and want to know more about what is behind this name. What they are supposed to know: Students are supposed to know the UK has four different parts.

At the end of the class, Ss will be able to: Develop a good understanding of the text Retell the history of the UK Know the significance of learning history Language ability: knows how to tell the history of a culture Cultural awareness: knows the development of British history Skill ability: knows how to organize time points into sequence to from a text
Main outcome Outcome: Write an introduction of British history which involves the following points: the history of the UK; the similarities and differences between four countries within UK； the importance of learning history

Lead-in Ask students to talk about the cities they know in the map of the UK Before reading Ask students to predict what they are going to read in the passage While reading 1st reading: read for main ideas Ask students to read through the passage to fill in a table about main ideas for each paragraph 2nd reading: read for structures Ask students to divide the text into three parts 3rd reading: read for details Sort out the timeline for British history 3 mins 1 min 6 mins 1 min 10 mins
Post Reading Discussion: Ask students to discuss the benefits of studying history Expansion: provide more information about the history of the UK Writing: ask students to give a brief introduction of British history Discussion: Ask students to discuss what is in a name after reading and writing 3 mins 3 mins 10 mins 3 mins
