On a recent afternoon, some 60 years after they graduated from grammar school,Kathleen Rys, 72, and her sister Lorraine O’Kelly, 70, sat down and had a meal with a classmate, Bruce Smit, 71, for the first time.
In the 1950s, Lorraine and Kathleen Rys’ family moved from Chicago to Monee. As new kids at Monee Elementary School, they soon found themselves on the outs with other students.
“I would be with the other guys and see Kathleen walking down the hallway, her head down, holding her books, walking slowly. And all of us guys would be flat against the wall until she passed. Then we’d burst into laughter. How rude is that It’s just crazy,” said Smit, a doctor whose wife, Tammy, organized the meeting.
The women said none of the teachers cared about it. “We just kept it to ourselves,” Lorraine said.
Over the years, Tammy Smit said, “Bruce would just start to cry at times. He’d wonder what happened to the sisters, if they landed OK.” One day a few weeks ago, Tammy went on the internet and found Mary O’Kelly, Lorraine’s daughter, and offered to set up a meeting. The idea of revisiting the pain was not well-received by Kathleen, who had never married, let alone gone on a date. It took some convincing, but Lorraine finally got Kathleen to agree to meet with Bruce.
Bruce broke into tears. “I’m so ashamed, so embarrassed,” he said. “But I’m so happy you’re still here and that I can finally apologize.” He said he hopes his apology will encourage others to seek for forgiveness for the pain they make on others. Lorraine said, “This is a beautiful thing. It’s just wonderful that a person from 60 years ago can ask for forgiveness. It’s like a miracle to us. It’s a healing to us.

Plants are boring. They just sit there photosynthesizing(光合作用)while animals have all the fun. Right Not so much. A new study has found that there is a long history of interactions between ants and plants. The ant and plant coevolution(协同进化)started with ants feeding on plants and plants evolving ant-friendly features.
Plants make a number of different structures that are specific for ant use. Some plants have evolved features that persuade ants into defending them from attack from other insects and even mammals. These include hollow thorns that ants will live inside, or extra nectar(琼浆) on leaves or stems for the ants to eat. Some ants will just cheat and take the nectar and run, but some will stick around and attack anything that tries to hurt the plant. Other plants get ants to help them move their seeds around, by providing them with rich food packets attached to the seeds. The ant will pick up the seed and carry it away, eat the food packet and leave the seed—often in a nutrient-rich area where it’ll grow better, and since it’s farther away from its parent, they won’t have to compete for resources.
But scientists weren’t sure how the evolutionary relationship between ants and plants got started. If evolution is an arms race between ants and species developing ways to make use of their neighbors, then scientists wanted to know whether plants or ants fired the first shot. It was a chicken-and-egg question, whether things started with ants developing behaviors to take advantage of plants, or plants evolving structures to take advantage of ants.
The history of ants and plants evolving together goes back to the time of the dinosaurs, and it’s not easy to tell from fossils who fired the first shot. However, it is a question of little significance. Scientists say their study matters because it provides a look at how these widespread and complex interactions evolved.
24. Some plants attach food packets to their seeds in order to ________.
A. reward the ants
B. make a fool of ants
C. provide nutrition for the seeds
D. get the seeds moved around
25. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us
A. How plants and ants interact.
B. What ants do to protect plants.
C. How plants and ants survive attacks.
D. Why plants and ants need co-evolution.
26. Which is true about the evolutionary relationship between ants and plants
A. Ants depended more upon plants.
B. It caused a race for better evolution.
C. How it got started was uncertain.
D. It was of little value for future studies.
27. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the passage
A. To introduce a science research method.
B. To inform readers of a latest research finding.
C. To arouse readers’ interest in science research.
D. To criticize people’s traditional views about plants.

Why do Americans struggle with watching their weight, while the French, who consume rich food, continue to stay thin Now a research by Comell University suggests how lifestyle and decisions about eating may affect weight. Researchers conclude that the French tend to stop eating when they feel full. However, Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their favorite TV show is over.
According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, a health expert, the French see eating as an important part of their lifestyle. They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table, while Americans see eating as something to be squeezed between the other daily activities. Mercola believes Americans lose the ability to sense when they are actually full. So they keep eating long after the French would have stopped. In addition, he points out that Americans drive to huge supermarkets to buy canned and frozen foods for the week. The French, instead, tend to shop daily, walking to small shops and farmers’ markets where they have a choice of fresh fruits, vegetables, and eggs as well as high-quality meats for each meal.
After a visit to the United States, Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don’t Get Fat, decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how to avoid food. Today she continues to stay slim and rarely goes to gym.
In spite of all these differences, evidence shows that recent lifestyle changes may be affecting French eating habits. Today the rate of obesity—or extreme overweight—among adults is only 6%. However, as American fast food gains acceptance and the young reject older traditions, the obesity rate among French children has reached 17%—and is growing.
28. This text is mainly about the relationship between ________.
A. Americans and the French
B. lifestyle and obesity
C. children and adults
D. fast food and overweight
29. This text is mainly developed ________.
A. by contrast B. by space C. by process D. by classification
30. Where does this text probably come from
A. A TV interview. B. A food advertisement.
C. A health report. D. A book review.

Live Every Day Like It’s a Holiday
We feel great on holiday because we let go of everyday stresses and strains. 31 So whether or not you’re going away this summer, there’s plenty you can do to make sure you benefit from that holiday feeling.
Sleep like a holidaymaker.
Sleep like a baby when you’re on your holidays but stay awake when you’re in your usual routine 32 To reset your sleep pattern, avoid bringing problems to bed. That includes your phone, TV or laptop. Make sure the room is dark and cool. Aim for at least seven hours’ ZZZs—just as you would on holiday.
Get moving.
33 Given that exercise is cheap, healthy and reduces stress, it makes absolute sense to build it into your day. A walk will release happy hormones, and ease anxiety and mild depression.
34
Part of the joy of going away is lingering over delicious food with families. Take up the holiday habit of sitting down as a family for at least one meal a day. Families who eat together experience less anxiety, less depression and less obesity, research has found.
Be a tourist in your own city.
Part of the thrill of a holiday is the novelty of discovering a new place and doing new things. 35 At weekends, check out a new music venue, visit a different museum or have a drink in that interesting-looking pub you’re always walking past. It will get you out of routine and make you feel alive. A bit like a holiday, really.
A. Make your meals a celebration.
B. Carve out some dedicated quiet time.

(2019·广东深圳中学高一月考)
One morning, little William was taking the bus to school. As usual, the students were doing all sorts of things on the school bus, like chatting with friends, listening to music, or just staring out of the window. Meanwhile, William was watching news reports on his phone. It was about 10 minutes before he would get off when he heard a loud noise. Some students in the front were screaming, and William, surprised, looked up to see what was happening. He found that the bus driver was no longer in his seat. He had passed out and fallen onto the bus steps.
The students were scared and didn’t know what to do. William, however, had received bus safety training in Grade 5 and had learned how to use the bus’ two-way radio in an emergency.
Now, in the face of danger, he quickly jumped out of seat, grabbed the radio, and reported that the driver needed immediate help. The radios on other buses allowed the bus driver’s workmates to hear William report the emergency. Soon another bus driver and an ambulance arrived to help.
When they got there, the bus driver was awake, sitting up but unable to speak. They sent the driver to hospital. After the incident, William and everyone else on the bus went to school as usual. William used what he had learned to help a sick bus driver get quick medical treatment. His brave actions attracted a lot of attention. People in his hometown now call the 11-year-old a hero. A local TV station even interviewed him, although he didn’t want to be the focus of the public.
