W:Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing to complain about the bad service that I received in your restaurant last Friday.
First of all, we were given a table just in front of the toilets because there was not any other table available, although we had booked one in advance. Secondly, we had to wait for half an hour to be served. I remember clearly that we arrived at 7:30 pm. After the long wait we had to change our minds and ask for meat because there was no seafood left.
To make matters worse, my husband found a dead fly in his soup. We were shocked and wanted to leave. So we asked for the bill, expecting we wouldn't have to pay for my husband's meal. Nobody came. After 15 minutes, I asked to see the manager. The head waiter told us that you were on holiday. At last, I was forced to pay D|S65 instead of D|S34 just for mine.
Today I really want you to know about these unfortunate incidents. I very much hope that in future you will take care of these mistakes.
Yours faithfully,
Carmen Pliego

When Shania was eight years old, her mother took her to many different bars, clubs and concerts to perform. In high school, Shania joined a local band, with which she often performed. After that, Shania moved to Toronto, where she continued singing.

In 1995, her next CD, The Woman in Me, which had eight hit songs, sold more than ten million copies. Her third CD, Come on Over, was also popular and she had another hit song.
Shania and Robert Lange, a famous producer, got married in 1993. After finishing her 2000 world tour, she decided to take a break from performing. In August 2001, they had a lovely son, whom they named Eja. After September 11th, Shania decided to spend more time on her family and stayed at home until the fall of 2002. The arts, especially music, should be part of every school's lessons at every grade level. Students would be much smarter if they had some musical experience. They could improve their classroom skills, like paying attention and following directions. People develop all these skills when they learn music. Making music also lets children use their imagination. It provides students with a chance to try out their own ideas.
Music not only makes children better students, but also gives them something positive to do. In a music program, children can be part of a band instead of joining a gang (团伙).Parents can enjoy listening to their children's music instead of seeing them glued_to_a computer or TV screen. In a school band, students get to be part of a team. They can get along well with old friends and make new friends through music.
Music builds self confidence, too. It gives children a sense of achievement and success. Making music is something for them to be proud of, and it lets kids practice performing in front of an audience. Music gives children an opportunity for self expression, and that helps develop their self confidence.
Once again, music is important because it can make children better students, give them something positive to do, and build their character. That is why music should be offered in every single grade in every school.

Background music may seem harmless, but it can have a powerful effect on those who hear it. Recorded background music first found its way into factories, shops and restaurants in the US. But it soon spread to other parts of the world. Now it is becoming increasingly difficult to go shopping or eat a meal without listening to music.
To begin with, “muzak” (音乐广播网) was intended simply to create a soothing (安慰) atmosphere. Recently, however, it's become big business — thanks in part to recent research. Dr Ronald Milliman, an American marketing expert, has shown that music can boost sales or increase factory production by as much as a third.
However, it has to be light music. A fast one has no effect at all on sales. Slow music can increase receipts by 38%. This is probably because shoppers slow down and have more opportunity to spot items they like to buy. Yet, slow music isn't always the answer. Dr Milliman found, for example, that in restaurants slow music meant customers took longer to eat their meals, which reduced overall sales. So restaurant owners might be well advised to play uptempo music to keep the customers moving — unless of course, the resulting indigestion (消化不良) leads to complaints!

30.We can know from the text that ________.
A.background music was first used in big department stores
B.proper music can increase the selling of goods
C.light music has a bad effect on production
D.restaurant owners had better play slow music to comfort their customers

How to protect your ears
You and your friends are leaving a concert on a Friday night. When you get outside, your ears are ringing. You have to shout to be heard. __31__ So no harm done ... right
Not quite. Temporary buzzing may be easy to ignore, but repeated exposure to loud noise will eventually cause serious — and irreversible (不可逆转的) — hearing loss. A new study conducted by researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston shows that one in five people between the ages of 12 and 19 are experiencing slight hearing loss, and one in 20 have mild hearing loss. __32__ But the good news is that there are plenty of ways you can protect your ears from further damage — and still listen to the music you love.
Ask around.Put your earbuds in or your headphones on, and then ask a friend next to you whether or not he or she can hear what you're listening to. __33__ Turn it down.
Buy noise canceling headphones.A pair of earbuds or headphones that fits comfortably will limit outside noise so that you can hear your music better at lower volume.
Take breaks. __34__ So when listening to music, take your headphones off for 15 or 20 minutes and let your ears enjoy the quiet.
__35__ You can buy a cheap pair at any drugstore as an easy way to lower volume at concerts — or while playing or practicing your own music — without changing the quality of the sound.
A.Use earplugs.
B.Keep the volume below 70 percent.
C.If the answer is yes, your music is too loud.
D.But by morning, your hearing is totally back to normal.
E.Like every other part of your body, your ears need rest.
F.Unfortunately, there's no way to get back hearing you've already lost.
G.The exposure to noise is louder and longer than in any previous generation.

Dear Tim,
I'm writing to tell you that I'll take part in the chorus in our school and ask if you'd like to go with me.
As you know, there are a wide variety of clubs in our school that deserve to join. Personally, the chorus is the best choice, where you can learn how to sing together with many people. By learning it, not only can you dig out the charm of the music, but also you can surely be in a good mood. What you should do is follow the teacher's instructions and practice.
What do you think of the chorus I'm sure you will have a lot of fun. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
Jatin and his younger sister,Neha,_lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks
One day, Jatin took Neha' s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn' t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Neha agreed and the two decided to share Jatin' s running shoes. Neha' s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Jatin. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Jatin often arrived late and was warned by the school.
A long distance race was going to be held for the boys in the city. When Jatin learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Jatin had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Neha and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners,_determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish_line drew near, another runner collided (碰撞) with Jatin from behind and Jatin crashed to the ground.

Paragraph 1:
Jatin looked up and he saw the other boys rushing ahead. Refusing to give up at this key point, Jatin clenched his teeth, jumped to his feet and ran as fast as he could. Finally, he was the fourth one to dash across the finish_line. Jatin couldn't help sobbing at the thought of letting his sister down. But much to his surprise, the runner who collided with him was disqualified for breaking the rule and Jatin won the third prize. Jatin felt overjoyed and relieved during the award ceremony, holding the shoes close to his chest.
Paragraph 2:
Filled with pleasure, Jatin walked home in no time. He could not wait to see his sister and share the good news. On his arrival, Jatin found Neha was walking about outside nervously and anxiously. “Neha, see what I have got for you.” Jatin said excitedly,_taking the prize out of his bag with his trembling hands. The instant Neha saw the shoes, her face lit up. So thrilled was she that she threw herself at Jatin. “Thank you! Jatin.” Tears of joy welled up in their eyes as the brother and the sister hugged tightly together.
