Step I 学习理解
活动一:识别过去分词(SB,P54,Part 1)
1.Let students look at the following sentences and underline the past participles.
(1) Born in the USA on 2 January 1970, Whitacre began studying music at the University of Nevada in 1988.
(2) Moved by this music, he said,“It was like seeing color for the first time.”
2.Ask students to find more of them in the text, and discuss their functions in pairs.
【设计意图】通过识别、寻找、讨论三大步骤,教师适当讲解,学生初步认识过去分词的构成和作用。
活动二:理解过去分词的用法(SB,P54,Part 2)
l Let students read the following sentence using past participles as the adverbial.
The Silver Hall is usually used for singing performances and is full of cheers and energy. →Usually used for singing performances, the Silver Hall is full of cheers and energy.
2.Ask students to rewrite the story using past participles as the adverbial.
(1)Henry was highly interested in music and began to write original compositions when he was in high school.
(2)They were pleased with his music and songs and finally invited him to perform in the Silver Hall.
(3)Though he was affected by gradual blindness soon after the performance, Henry was still capable of writing compositions and he found that creating music was a relief and cure for his illness.
(4)When he got absorbed in his world of music, he felt as if he could “see” the beauty of the world around him, like he had in his previous life.
3.Let students find out the differences in meaning and function between the newly written sentences and the original ones.

1.Ask students to match the sentence halves and rewrite each sentence beginning with a past participle.

⑤The album was recorded in a new way
⑥ He was invited to perform on the stage

Well known as a successful band, the Impact members show quite a few striking qualities. They never ever give up.

Ask students to use past participles to write down something about one of their hobbies, e.g.: why they’d like to take that as their hobby and how they keep it...(at least use 3 past participles)
Sample writing:
Encouraged by my mother, I began to be interested in playing the piano. Invited to give performances on the stage, I gained confidence gradually. Praised by others a lot, I’ve been satisfied with my achievements in music so far.
【设计意图】为了检验学生是否真正掌握了过去分词,设计了开放式写作环节。本节课的主要内容就是让学生 用过去分词表达感情和描述情景,这一写作练习很好地将两者融合在一起,让学生自由表达自己的兴趣爱好,话题接近学生生活实际,真正可以让学生学以致用,有话可说。
