Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does something about it. It is true. People usually begin their talks with “Isn’t it a nice day ” “Do you think it will rain ” “What a fine day!” Many people think they can tell what the weather is going to be like. But they hardly agree with each other. One man may say, “Do you see how cloudy it is in the east It’s going to rain tomorrow.” Another man will say, “No, it’s going to be still cloudy.” Another man will say, “No, it’s going to be fine tomorrow.”
People often look for the weather they want. When a farmer needs water, he looks for something to tell him it’s going to rain; he won’t believe anything else. When friends have a travel, they are sure the weather is going to clear up very quickly.
Almost everyone listens to what the weatherman says. But he doesn’t always tell us what we want, and once in a while he makes a mistake. Still, he probably comes closer to being correct than anyone else.

In most languages, a greeting is usually followed by small talk. Small talk means the little things we talk about at the start of a conversation. In English-speaking countries, people often make small talk about the weather: “Nice, isn’t it ” “Terrible weather, isn’t it ” But there is something special about small talk. It must be about something which both people have the same opinion about. The purpose of small talk is to let both people agree on something. This makes meeting people easier and more comfortable. People usually agree about the weather, so it is a safe topic for small talk. But people often disagree about religion or politics so these are not suitable topics for small talk. The topics for small talk also depend on where the conversation is taking place. At football matches, people make small talk about the game they are watching: “Great game, isn’t it ” At bus stops, people may comment about the transport system: “The bus service is terrible, isn’t it ”
Greetings and small talk are an important part of conversation in any language. The way people greet each other and the things they talk about, however, may be different from one language to another. This shows that there is much more to learn when we learn a language than just the vocabulary and the grammar of the language. We also have to learn the social behavior of the people who speak it.
26.Small talk is ________.
A.to let people disagree about something
B.a kind of conversation with short words
C.a greeting when people meet each other
D.something we talk about to start with a conversation
27.The favorite topic of small talk is about ________.

28.The passage suggests that when we learn a language ________ .
A.we should know the culture about the country

C.we should grasp the importance of the language
D.we should learn about the transport system of the country
29.When we say “Great game, isn’t it ” we in fact ________.
A.have a conversation B.start small talk
C.greet each other D.ask a question
30.What we learn from the passage is that ________.
A.in English-speaking countries we should talk about the weather

C.small talk is an important part in a language
D.small talk depends on the purpose of the conversation

八、材料作文
I strongly believe it is important to be a good listener.
I used to feel stressed before the exam. However, I kept it to myself. As a result, I felt worried and couldn’t pay attention to what the teacher said in class. One day, after I bravely told my close friend about it, I felt that relaxed.
Being a good listener plays an important role in communication. Parents should listen to their children, so they will understand them better and trust(信任) each other. Teachers should also listen to their students so that they can increase their understanding and improve relationships. Students should listen to their classmates, then their friendship will be increased and they will help each other.
In a word, good listening can really make us get closer to each other.
