Throughout its long history, writing has been a big deal in China. Since the earliest dynasties, the skills of reading and writing have been highly respected. In fact, they form an important part of the Chinese art world. Calligraphy(书法), the art of writing with a brush, is almost as old as writing itself. And though this art form dates back thousands of years, it is still very popular today.
________. The answer most likely lies way back in the Shang Dynasty (about 1600-1046 BC). That’s when characters were first used in religious(宗教的)events. This practice showed a spiritual part which gave writing power in the eyes of common people.
Calligraphy spread during the Han Dynasty, when the, necessary tools and materials were more easily got. First there was the brush, made from bamboo and animal hair. Together, these tools were known as the“four treasures of study” in ancient China.

Chopsticks are pairs of sticks with the same length that have been used in most of eastern Asian countries for over 3,000 years. According to the history, chopsticks were invented in China about 5,000 years ago, although the exact date isn't known. The practice became popular in Korea, Vietnam and Japan. Today they are a symbol of Asian culture.
During the Spring and Autumn Period, chopsticks made of copper(铜) and iron developed over a long period of time. Later the chopsticks with coating came in the Han Dynasty. Then gold and silver chopsticks followed. It was said that silver chopsticks would turn black at once if they touched poisoned food (but we know it was wrong today), so in history many emperors used silver chopsticks to check whether the food was bad for them or not before eating. Different materials have been used to make chopsticks until now, among which the most valuable—ones are made of ivory and jade. Those can show how rich the owners are. But bamboo is the most common one.
Chopsticks are also regarded as gifts to others, which are often given to the people from other countries as gifts because they stand for the culture of our country. In China, chopsticks are traditionally given to a daughter when she marries to hope that they will have a child very soon, because the pronunciation of word “chopsticks” in Chinese is like “quick chiid”. When chopsticks are given to a lover, it mean s“We’ll be together forever.” Chopsticks are often given to the people from other countries as gifts because they stand for the culture of our country.
Also, people often believe chopsticks have something to do with good luck. So many families will choose to put new chopsticks on the table at diner on New Year’s Eve as a way of wishing for good luck while dropping chopsticks is a sign of bad luck. Besides, the round end of chopsticks represents the sky and the square end represents the earth. Ancient Chinese believed their shapes represented yin and yang. It’s believed that using chopsticks can increase fingers’ flexibility(灵活性). Some experts also find that it can improve memory.
There are some things we should keep in mind while eating with chopsticks. Don’t use chopsticks to beat the bowl or plate to make noises. Never point at others with your chopsticks or put them into rice directly. These behaviors are considered to be impolite.
