While the start of a new school year is always exciting, this year was even more so for some elementary school students in Auckland, New Zealand. They became the world’s first kids to be “taught” by a digital teacher, Will. Before you start imagining a human-like robot walking around the classroom, Will is just an avatar (化身) that turns up on the student’s desktop, tablet, or smartphone screen when called.
Thanks to a digital camera and microphone, the avatar not only responds to questions the kids may have, but also picks up non-verbal signals. For example, if a student smiles at Will, he responds by smiling back. This two-way communication not only helps draw the students’ attention, but also allows the programme’s developers to monitor their involvement(参与) and make changes if needed.
Vector’s Chief Digital Officer, Nikhil Ravishankar, believes that Will-like avatars could be a novel way to attract the attention of the next generation. He says, “Using a digital human is a very popular method to deliver new information to people, and I have a lot of hope in this technology as a means to deliver rich and educational experience in the future.” Greg Cross, the Chief Business Officer for Soul Machines, states that kids who have grown up in this digital times adapt to new technologies quickly, and he hopes to develop the idea of digital humans in the area of education further.
The programme, in place since August 2018, has been a great success so far. However, no matter how popular it becomes, Will is unlikely to replace human educators any time soon. For one, the avatar’s knowledge base is severely limited. But more importantly, even the smartest digital avatars could never predict and react to all the unexpected situations that educators have to deal with on a daily basis. However, it could come in handy as a “personal teacher”, providing kids with one-on-one help on the subjects or even topics.
4. What is mentioned about Will in the first paragraph
A. He is a human-like robot teacher.
B. He is the first robot teacher in the world.
C. He is a digital teacher teaching in a school.
D. He will walk across the classroom to you when called.
5. In what way does the digital teacher help the students
A. By taking part in discussion.
B. By changing teaching methods.
C. By communicating with students.
D. By monitoring students’ behaviour.
6. What is Greg Cross’s attitude towards the digital teacher
A. Supportive. B. Doubtful C. Uncaring. D. Dissatisfied
7. What can be inferred about the digital teacher from the last paragraph
A. It has entered many homes as kids’ private teacher.
B. It will teach in class in place of human educators.
C. It’s good at handling unexpected situations.
D. It remains to be improved.
C
Children experience advertising in many forms-on TV, magazines, newspapers, movies, the Internet and more. And advertising works on children. For example, the more TV a child watches, the more toys that child is likely to want and ask for. This is why it’s important for children to learn that advertisements are trying to make people purchase something. And advertisers always aim to make their products look good, perhaps even better than they really are.
Advertising affects children in different ways. How children think of advertising can depend on several things, including their age or what they have experienced. At 0-2 years old, children can’t tell the difference between advertising and actual programmes. At 3-6 years old, children can recognise advertisements and tell them from actual programmes, but they don’t understand that ads are trying to sell something. And they are likely to think of advertisements as being funny. At 7-11 years old, when children go to primary school, they can understand that advertisements are trying to sell them something, remember advertising messages and recognise some advertising techniques like overstating(夸大) how good products are. However, they might not always understand that products aren’t as good as advertisements say they are.
To limit the effects of advertising on school-age children, the most important thing parents can do is talk about advertisements and encourage their children to think about what they are trying to do.
It is a good idea to focus on the advertisements that a child sees most often. For example, parents can get their children thinking and developing a questioning attitude. In other words, what’s the product in this advertisement What is it for Who is it for
They can also ask their children about the techniques that are being used to sell a product. This can help them work out how an advertisement makes its product look good.
8. What does the underlined word “purchase” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Say. B. Buy C. Watch D. Discuss
9. Which of the following influences how children view advertisements
A. Children’s interest. B. Children’s experience.
C. Children’s sex D. Children’ s parents
10. What do children aged 3-6 probably think of advertisements
A. They are pretty funny.
B. They are trying to sell toys.
C. They are being shown in many ways.
D. They are not different from other programmes.
11. In what way can parents limit the influence of advertising on their children
A By teaching them to run advertisements.
B. By buying advertised products and comparing them.
C By guiding them to see through advertisement.
D. By talking about the most successful advertisements.

On any given day,you can find most 10-year-old boys throwing a ball around outside, riding bikes or playing video games. But Braden Baker is different.
Braden is a hearing damaged 5th-grader and has to wear hearing aids(助听器).Unluckily,Braden’s dog Chewy found his hearing aids on the floor and destroyed them-not once, but twice-they had to be replaced. But at $3,500 to $6,000 a pair,Braden’s carelessness was costly.
Braden’s mother Ashley sat Braden down and had a long talk about taking better care of his hearing aids, explaining how much they cost. “I told him that he was lucky to get another pair and that some people couldn’t afford a new pair,” Ashley said.
Those words stuck in Braden’s mind, and he realised not every child who needed hearing aids could afford them. Recently the 10-year-old decided to start a GoFundMe page to raise money for those who aren’t so lucky.
Braden made a video to explain why he wanted to raise money. Ashley said, “We weren’t sure how it would turn out. He began with a goal of $1, 000. We woke up the next morning after the page went live and found it had raised $400.”
This encouraged him to start making more videos. Fast-forward a few months and Braden’s GoFundMe page has raised over $15,000, which Braden donates to the Oticon Hearing Foundation. That money will be used to help other families buy hearing aids for their children.
The project has not only taught Braden the value of money, but according to his mother, “he’s learned that if you put a small idea into action, amazing things can happen.”
Braden’s advice to those looking for ways to give back to others is “Don’ t give up! Any small idea can get really big.”
12. Why did Braden have to change his hearing aids
A. He lost his old ones as a result of his carelessness.
B. He wanted a better pair of them.

16._______ Try the following steps:
Calm yourself. 17._______ You can take a couple of breaths and think of something that gives you pleasure:a beautiful scene in nature, or someone you love.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Why do parents have such a difficult time communicating openly and honestly with their children? For this, there are many reasons but the major cause is their not being able to properly understand their children. It is a dangerous gap because parents will have to communicate with their children about a wide variety of issues during the most important years of their lives. Thus, parents must know how to communicate openly and honestly with their children.
There are a few tips to make communication easier between parents and their children. As parents, you should listen to what children say carefully and pay much attention to it. Make them feel that their views really matter, which not only helps your discussions with your children but brings you closer to them.
Meanwhile, try to remember some of the negative feeling you experienced as a teenager and apply them to your children’s situation. Never make negative remarks to your children about what they have said or done. Remember how much courage it would have taken for your children to come and talk to you about their personal issues. If your children are unusually angry,it may be time to spend a bit of quality time with your children to determine what is wrong and where the anger comes from.
It is,therefore, necessary for parents to try to keep communication open at all times with your children. Try to remember what it was like to be a teenager and how vulnerable(脆弱的)you felt. Then you will be well on your way to helping your children communicate more openly and honestly.

Hi, Worried,
I’m sorry to know that you’re having such a bad time at the moment. Actually, everyone will have one of those periods when everything seems to be going wrong. Therefore, it is unnecessary to be worried. You should learn self-control, which can help avoid saying and doing something that you’ll regret. The following are my suggestions.
To begin with, sharing your feelings with your friends and teachers is a good choice as you can remove your negative emotions by doing so. Another effective suggestion is that you should take more physical exercise, which can lift your spirits. Last but not least, keep an optimistic attitude towards life and enjoy the pleasure life has brought to you.
I hope my suggestions will be of benefit to you. May you get rid of your trouble soon.
Yours,
Jamie
