Unit2 Listening and Speaking and Reading and Thinking
One sunny afternoon in June, Jenny and I were walking home from school when we noticed a loud chirping(啁啾声). We then found a little sad bird whose right wing was broken. Jenny cupped the bird her hands. The bird chirped all the way to our house.
My mom took one look at the little bird and said, “No way! I’m not having another animal in the house.” But once she got a closer look at those big, sad eyes and heard that sad chirping, she nodded quickly.
Mom gently set the bird on the table. She designed a splint(夹板)and carefully fixed it to his wing. Our dog, Buttons, seemed unfriendly to the bird so we drove her away.
The little bird earned the name Peep. We kept him in a cage. Peep couldn’t fly, which seemed to upset him. But Peep unexpectedly made friends with Buttons. Peep would jump onto Buttons’ back for a free ride around the back yard.
Later, Peep’s wing got better. Mom cut off most of the splint. She couldn’t get all of it, so there were bits of white tape stuck to his wing. He started moving his wing crazily. Peep flew further each morning but he always came back.
One Sunday morning when Jenny let Peep out of his cage, he just kept flying and never came back.
A few months later, Jenny and I were walking home from school, and a bird landed on a low tree just in front of us. We both stopped and looked at it, amazed. The bird had little bits of white tape stuck to his right wing.
Peep sat on the tree chirping at us for a couple of seconds, and then flew off. He had perhaps come to say a proper goodbye and thank us for saving his life.

II.
Gossip is the sharing of personal information about someone else who is not present. All of us have probably caught ourselves, from time to time, allowing ourselves to enjoy the pleasure of gossiping more than we would like to admit. Someone says the words, “Don’t tell this to anyone.” 1 We all know that we shouldn’t talk behind someone’s back, but gossip is so common.
Gossip has some characteristics(特点). First, gossip is an activity that is done with other people. 2 Second, the information shared is always about someone who is not present in the conversation, or about someone whom we believe to be absent. Third, when we gossip, we not only share facts, but also make some judgments about the person.
Researchers studied volunteers, including women and men, to find out some facts about gossip. They found that most gossip was neutral(不含褒贬义的). 3 Most of this gossip was about people they knew. Negative gossip was twice as common as positive gossip. Over three-fourths of the gossip was simply discussing someone else.
4 Outgoing people gossip more than quiet people. People who are wealthy and well educated gossip more than people who have less money and education. 5 On average, people spend about 52 minutes a day gossiping.
A. We can’t do it alone or only in our heads.
B. Women gossip more than men, but only neutrally.
C. So people express their angry feelings by gossiping.
D. What’s more interesting is who gossips and how much.
E. And the information was interesting for the people present.
F. But moments later, we may tell it to someone else with the exact same warning.
G. It means people were simply sharing information about a person who wasn’t present.

But once she got a closer look at those big,sad eyes and heard that sad chirping, she nodded quickly可知,作者的母亲是出于同情才收留了那只鸟儿的。
The bird had little bits of white tape stuck to his right wing可知,珍妮和作者是根据鸟儿翅膀上的白色胶带辨认出它的。
