Dates and names are the sticks and stones over which the currents(水流) of history flow. But trying to remember all those important facts can be difficult and boring.
Reading and memorizing facts might not be much fun.But if you knew that it could help you get a job as a tourist guide, you might think differently. Now students at a high school in Sidon,an ancient city in Lebanon(黎巴嫩) in the Middle East, are doing just that.
The Sidon-based,Al-Iman high school has begun training students as tourist guides at the city’s historical and religious sites. As a part of the training,on December 26,a group of students were taken for a visit to the city’s Sea Castle. They listened to explanations about the fortress’(堡垒) history, including its origin, the way it was built and the wars it has seen.
“It is good for me to learn about history on the spot.We have learnt much more than we could by just reading the history textbooks,” said one of the students,Hussam Rawas.“I am really proud of being able to explain things to foreign tourists.”
Up to 250 students have been selected to take a year’s special training course by a professional teacher. After that, some of the students may have the chance to become professional tourist guides.
The principal of the school,Kamel Kazbar, said he came up with the idea after he was surprised by the poor quality of the guides in the city.“Most Lebanese,” he said,“ignore the history of the city of Sidon.”
Kazbar described the plan as an extra-curricular activity that aimed at highlighting the importance of Sidon’s legacy of historical sites.“This is a pioneering project, which will be good for the students, the city and tourists.”The city government and its religious authorities also welcomed the idea.

Remembering names is an important social skill. Here are some ways to master it.
Recite and repeat in conversation.
When you hear a person’s name, repeat it.Immediately say it to yourself several times without moving your lips. You could also repeat the name in a way that does not sound forced or artificial.
Ask the other person to recite and repeat.
You can let other people help you remember their names. After you’ve been introduced to someone, ask that person to spell the name and pronounce it correctly for you. Most people will be pleased by the effort you’re making to learn their names.
Admit you don’t know.
Admitting that you can’t remember someone’s name can actually make people relaxed. Most of them will feel sympathy if you say,“I’m working to remember names better.Yours is right on the tip of my tongue. What is it again?”
Use associations.
Link each person you meet with one thing you find interesting or unusual. For example, you could make a mental note:“Vicki Cheng—tall, black hair”.To reinforce(加强) your associations, write them on a small card as soon as possible.
Limit the number of new names you learn at one time.
When meeting a group of people, concentrate on remembering just two or three names.Free yourself from remembering every one.Few of the people in mass introductions expect you to remember their names.Another way is to limit yourself to learning just first names.Last names can come later.
Go early.
Consider going early to conferences, parties and classes.Sometimes just a few people show up on time. That’s fewer names for you to remember. And as more people arrive, you can hear them being introduced to others—an automatic review for you.
5.How will most people feel when you try hard to remember their names?
A.They will be moved.
B.They will be annoyed.
C.They will be delighted.
D.They will be discouraged.
6.If you can’t remember someone’s name,you may ________.
A.tell him the truth
B.tell him a white lie
C.ask him for pity
D.ask others to help you
7.When you meet a group of people,it is better to remember ________.
A.all their names
B.a couple of names first
C.just their last names
D.as many names as possible
8.What does the text mainly tell us?
A.Tips on an important social skill.
B.Importance of attending parties.

Food sometimes gets poisoned with harmful things.A person who eats such food can get an illness called food poisoning.Food poisoning is usually not serious, but some types are deadly. The symptoms of food poisoning usually begin within hours of eating the poisoned food.Fever is one of the most common symptoms.
Certain microorganisms(微生物) cause most types of food poisoning.Bacteria and other microorganisms can poison eggs, meat, vegetables, and many other foods. After entering the body, these tiny living things release poisons that make people sick.
Some chemicals can also cause food poisoning. They are often added to food while it is being grown, processed,or prepared. For example, many farmers spray chemicals on crops to kill weeds and insects. Some people may have a bad reaction to those chemicals when they eat the crops.
Some plants and animals contain natural poisons that are harmful to people. These include certain kinds of seafood, grains, nuts, seeds, beans, and mushrooms.
When people handle food properly, the risk of food poisoning is very small.Microorganisms multiply rapidly in dirty places and in warm temperatures. This means that people should never touch food with dirty hands or put food on unwashed surfaces.Food should be kept in a refrigerator to stop microorganisms from growing.Meat needs to be cooked thoroughly to kill any dangerous microorganisms.People should also wash food covered with chemicals before eating it.Finally, people should not eat wild mushrooms or other foods that grow in the wild. Some of these foods may contain natural materials that are poisonous to humans. In addition, some types of fish can be poisonous.
Most people recover from food poisoning after a few days of resting and drinking extra water. If people eat natural poisons, they must go to the hospital right away to have their stomachs emptied.
1.We know from the passage that the symptoms of food poisoning ________.
A.are always accompanied by a fever

The first broadcast of VOA Special English was on October 19th,1959.VOA officials wanted a program to communicate with people learning English around the world. They wanted a way for people to get to know the language and,at the same time, learn about the United States and world events.
In 1959,the director of the Voice of America was Henry Loomis. In his job,he traveled around the world. He found that people of all ages wanted to learn English. He wondered if VOA could help.He asked his program manager,Barry Zorthian,to create a broadcast tool that would provide information to listeners who had a limited knowledge of English.Mister Zorthian gathered a small team of young people to develop a list of words to be used in the broadcasts.
52 years ago,on October 19th,listeners heard the first Special English broadcast.Paul Parks read a ten-minute news program slowly and carefully. He read at a speed that is about one-third slower than other VOA English broadcasts. He read so slowly that each word could be clearly understood by listeners on their shortwave radios. The sentences were short. And the words used were limited to the most common English words.Special English was an experiment. There was no model for such a broadcast in slow-speed English using simple words.Would anyone listen to such a program?Would they like it?

请阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

When Frida Kahlo’s paintings were on show in London,a poet described her paintings as “a ribbon(丝带) around a bomb”.Such comments seem to suggest Kahlo had a big influence on the art world of her time.Sadly, she is actually a_much_bigger_name today than she was during her time.
Born in 1907 in a village near Mexico City,Kahlo suffered from polio(小儿麻痹症) at the age of seven. Her spine(脊柱) became bent as she grew older. Then,in 1925,her back was broken in several places in a school-bus accident.Throughout the rest of her life, the artist had many operations, but nothing was able to cure the terrible pain in her back. However, the accident had an unexpected side effect. While lying in her bed recovering,Kahlo taught herself to paint.
In 1929,she got married to Diego Rivera, another famous Mexican artist.Rivera’s strong influence on Kahlo’s style can be seen in her early works, but her later works from the 1940s,known today as her best works, show less influence from her husband.
Unfortunately, her works did not attract much attention in the 1930s and 1940s,even in her home country. Her first one-woman show in Mexico was not held until 1953.For more than a decade after her death in 1954,Kahlo’s works remained largely unnoticed by the world, but in the 1970s her works began to gain international fame at last.
36.What does the phrase “a much bigger name” in Paragraph 1 most nearly mean?
A.a far better artist
B.a far more gifted artist
C.a much stronger person
D.a much more famous person
37.The terrible pain Kahlo suffered was caused by________.
A.polio
B.her bent spine
C.back injuries
D.the operations she had
38.Kahlo’s style had become increasingly independent since the________.
A.1930s B.1940s
C.1950s D.1970s
39.What is the author’s attitude towards Kahlo?
A.Devotion. B.Sympathy.
C.Worry. D.Encouragement.
B
Down-to-earth means being honest, open, and easy to deal with.It is a pleasure to find someone who is down-to-earth.A person who is down-to-earth is easy to talk to.He or she accepts others as equals.A down-to-earth person may be an important member of society,of course, but he does not let his importance go to his heads, and he does not consider himself to be better than others who are less important.Someone who is filled with self-importance and pride, often without cause,is said to have his nose in the air. There is no way a person with his nose in the air can be down-to-earth.
Americans use another expression that is similar in some way to down-to-earth.The expression is both feet on the ground.Someone with both feet on the ground is a person with a good understanding of reality. He has what is called common sense. He may have dreams but he does not allow them to block his knowledge of what is real. The opposite kind of person is one who has his head in the clouds.A man with his head in the clouds is a dreamer whose mind is not in the world.Sometimes such a dreamer can be brought back to reality;sharp words from the teacher, for example, can usually get a daydreaming student to put both feet back on the ground.
The person who is down-to-earth usually has both feet on the ground.But_the_opposite_is_not_always_true.Someone with both feet on the ground may not be as open and easy to deal with as someone who is down-to-earth.When we have both our feet firmly on the ground,we are realistic and we act honestly and openly toward others, and our lives are like the ground below us,solid and strong.
40.If a person has his nose in the air,he ________.
A.is down-to-earth
B.is easy to deal with
C.always thinks he is more important than others
D.is confident
41.If a person has both feet on the ground,he ________.
A.is in touch with reality, and doesn’t have any dreams
B.has some dreams but he is realistic
C.is honest, open and easy to deal with
D.is honest, open but hard to deal with
42.From the second paragraph,we know that sharp words from a teacher can usually ________.
A.help a student get down to the earth
B.wake a student up
C.help a daydreaming student come down to the ground
D.help a daydreaming student to become more realistic
43.The underlined sentence “But the opposite is not always true.” in the last paragraph most probably means that ________.
A.the person who has his nose in the air is not true
B.a man with his head in the clouds is often not intelligent
C.the opposite direction is always wrong
D.a person who has both feet on the ground may not be down-to-earth
C
I was blind, but I was ashamed of it if it was known.I refused to use a white stick and hated asking for help. After all,I was a teenage girl, and I couldn’t bear people to look at me and think I was not like them.I must have been a terrible danger on the roads.Coming across me wandering through the traffic, motorists probably would have to step rapidly on their brakes.Apart from that, there were all sorts of disasters that used to occur on the way to and from work.
One evening,I got off the bus about halfway home where I had to change buses, and as usual I ran into something.“I’m awfully sorry,”I said and stepped forward only to run into it again. When it happened a third time,I realized I had been apologizing to a lamppost. This was just one of the stupid things that constantly happened to me.So I carried on and found the bus stop, which was a request stop, where the bus wouldn’t stop unless passengers wanted to get on or off.No one else was there and I had to try to guess if the bus had arrived.
Generally in this situation, because I hated showing I was blind by asking for help,I tried to guess at the sound.Sometimes I would stop a big lorry and stand there feeling stupid as it drove away.In the end,I usually managed to swallow my pride and ask someone at the stop for help.
But on this particular evening no one joined me at the stop;it seemed that everyone had suddenly decided not to travel by bus.Of course I heard plenty of buses pass,or I thought I did.But because I had given up stopping them for fear of making a fool of myself,I let them all go by.I stood there alone for half an hour without stopping one. Then I gave up.I decided to walk on to the next stop.
44.The girl refused to ask for help because she thought________.
A.she might be recognized
B.asking for help looked silly
C.she was normal and independent
D.being found blind was embarrassing
45.After the girl got off the bus that evening,she________.
A.began to run
B.hit a person as usual

D.was caught by something
46.At the request stop that evening, the girl________.
A.stopped a big lorry
B.stopped the wrong bus
C.made no attempt to stop the bus
D.was not noticed by other people
47.What was the problem with guessing at the sound to stop a bus?
A.Other vehicles also stopped there.
B.It was unreliable for making judgments.
C.More lorries than buses responded to the girl.
D.It took too much time for the girl to catch the bus.
D
Most Americans believe that someone isn’t grown-up until the age of 26 and they should complete their education, have a full-time job, have a family to support and be financially independent. They also believe that becoming a real grown-up is a process which begins at about the age of 20 and takes about five years, according to the report from the University of Chicago’s National Opinion Research Center.
The findings are based on a representative sample of 1,398 people over the age of 18 who were surveyed in person. The survey found that people expect the transitions to grown-up status to be completed at the following ages:age 20.9 self-supporting; age 21.1 no longer living with parents;age 21.2 having a full-time job; age 22.3 education completed;age 24.5 being able to support a family financially;age 25.7 getting married;and age 26.2 having a child.
“There is a large degree of agreement across social groups on the relative importance of the seven transitions,” said Tom Smith, director of the survey. The only obvious pattern of differences is on views about supporting a family, having children and getting married.Older adults consider these more important than younger adults do.This probably shows in large part a change in values across generations away from traditional family values. The most valued step toward reaching adulthood, the survey found,is completing education, followed by full-time employment, supporting a family, financial independence, living independently, and marriage.
48.According to the first paragraph,someone is a grown-up when he ________.
A.has found a full-time job
B.has finished his study in university
C.can make money and support himself after completing his education
D.can support a family and be financially independent after graduation
49.A young man of 24 may be busy ________.
A.finding a job
B.finding a girlfriend
C.making money
D.preparing for his wedding
50.The underlined word “status” in the second paragraph probably means “________”.
A.position B.rank
C.level D.situation
51.From the passage,we learn that ________.
A.being grown-up is just a matter of age
B.being grown-up is a process which takes some time

That cold January night,I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was walking home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theater. With opening night only a week away,I was still learning my lines.I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank and my acting at night at the same time.As I walked,I thought seriously about giving up both acting and San Francisco.City life had become too much for me.
As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings,I felt very small and cold.I began running, both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers.Very few people were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my apartment,I heard a sound behind me.I turned quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun.The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight.Still, the noise had made me nervous,so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I realize what the noise had been.It had been my wallet falling to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired any more.I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noise.Although I searched the sidewalk anxiously for fifteen minutes,my wallet was nowhere to be found.
Just as I was about to give up the search,I heard the garbage truck pull up to the sidewalk next to me.When a voice called from the inside,“Alisa Camacho?” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened, and out jumped a small red-haired man with an amused look in his eyes.“Is this what you’re looking for?” he asked, holding up a small square shape.
It was nearly 3 a.m.by the time I got into bed.I wouldn’t get much sleep that night, but I had got my wallet back.I also had got back some enjoyment of city life.I realized that the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.

Dear Roger,
How are you doing?I’m writing to tell you something about our space class. As you know, recently, forty million students have attended China’s first space class conducted by a Chinese astronaut on Shenzhou X,Wang Yaping.I did a survey about this space class among my classmates.
Their opinions on this space class are as follows.Firstly, the space class will make students have more interest and enthusiasm in science study.Secondly, people can gain a good knowledge of the universe.Thirdly,it is more efficient and livelier than the class on the ground.Besides, many students express their wishes of attending more space classes in the future.
How do people in the US like this space class?Looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
