The search for life in the universe took a step forward last month with the opening of the Allen Telescope Array(艾伦望远镜阵列) in Hat Creek,California. The telescopes were partly made possible by a gift of twenty-five million dollars from Paul Allen. The total cost of the project is already fifty million dollars.
At present, there are 42 radio telescopes working at Hat Creek Observatory. The signals they receive are combined to create what is equal to a single, very large telescope. The telescope will be used to observe objects like exploding stars, black holes and other objects that are predicted but have not yet been observed.Seth Shostak of the SETI Institute says this is the first telescope whose main purpose is to search for signals from intelligent life in space. The SETI Institute is based in Mountain View,California. The organization supports the search for other life forms in the universe.
What makes the Allen Telescope Array unusual is that it can collect and study information from a wide area of the sky.In addition, the 42 telescopes can study information about several projects at the same time. That means studies of large areas of the sky can be made faster than ever before.
Some officials think the Allen Telescope Array will be completed in three more years.350 individual radio telescopes are planned. The new abilities of the Allen Telescope Array will make searching for stars similar to the sun much faster.
An earlier search by SETI,Project Phoenix, studied about 800 stars to a distance of 240 light years. The project ended in 2004.With the Allen Telescope Array, astronomers hope to gather thousands of times more information in the search for life beyond our planet.

Throughout their history,Americans have been people on the move. The early immigrants had to travel to get to the new world.Once they arrived, they settled along the east coast. But they weren’t content to stay there.Explorers and traders journeyed to the unknown western territories.Later, settlers moved west to develop these new areas. As a result of this westward migration,Americans eventually occupied the whole continent—from the Atlantic to the Pacific.Even today,Americans seem unable to stay in one place.Research says that the average American moves every five years.
Besides their habit of changing addresses,Americans are used to traveling. Some people make long-distance commutes to work daily.Their jobs may even require them to take frequent business trips. Most companies provide an annual vacation for their employees, and people often use that time to travel. Some people just visit friends or relatives in distant states.Others go on low-budget weekend excursions and stay in economic motels(汽车旅馆).Those with more expensive tastes choose luxurious resorts and hotels.Camping out in the great outdoors appeals to adventurous types. Some travel in recreational vehicles(RVs)to camp out in comfort, while others “rough it” by sleeping in tents.
Most Americans prefer to travel within their nation’s borders. Why?For one thing,it’s cheaper than traveling abroad, and there’s no language problem. But besides that, the vast American territory offers numerous tourist attractions.Nature lovers can enjoy beaches, mountains, canyons, lakes and a wealth of natural wonders.Major cities offer visitors a multitude of urban delights. The convenience of modern freeways, railways and airplanes makes travel in America as easy as pie.
Many American vacations are as unique as the people who take them.Families often plan their trips with the kids in mind.More and more “family friendly” vacation resorts offer special programs for children.History buffs(爱好者)seek out famous historical sites and museums.Environmentalists prefer “green vacations”.These trips allow them to observe flora and fauna(动植物群) up-close without disturbing the sensitive balance of nature. Some people find sea sails relaxing and refreshing.Others hit the water to go fishing, skiing or whitewater rafting.Daring souls get the thrill of a lifetime on trekking expeditions and safaris(旅行)in remote places from Africa to Asia.

The British aren’t having as many children as they used to.One reason is that people are having children much older than before, meaning they have fewer years in which they can have them. After years at university, they need a few years of work experience before they can get the job they want. They might then get married, but it’s incredibly expensive to buy a house in the UK.
The above explains why young British people now don’t move out of their parents’ home until they are around 30 years old on average. It is not until they are 30 that they can afford their own home.Increasingly,it is not until that age that they can afford to get married and start a new life in a new home. It’s only after this age that many young people start thinking about having a child.
So a British person manages to get a job,get a home and get married, why isn’t he or she then having at least two children on average? The main reason is that it is quite expensive to bring up a child in the UK.Why is it expensive? Well, these days, both parents need to work just to pay for their home and living expenses.Because both parents are at work, that means they then need to pay someone to look after their child during the day.Paying for this childcare is nearly always expensive.
The recent financial crisis is making things even harder for families, since unemployment is rising and even fewer people can afford to have children. With so much pressure on families,is it any surprise that the divorce rate is so high?
So what is Britain doing to try and save the British family? The government is trying to make it cheaper to have children. For example, there have been increases in money families can claim from the state each month. Also, there are increasing government subsidies for nursery schools,so that parents do not need to pay so much for childcare.
The government is also trying to reduce the number of hours British parents have to work to earn enough money to pay their bills. If parents didn’t have to work so many hours, they’d have more time to spend with their children and wouldn’t need to spend so much on childcare. On average,a Briton works 49 hours a week, which is the most in Europe. The state is now considering introducing laws to encourage companies to improve their employees’ work-life balance.Let’s hope they’re not too late to save the British family.Otherwise, the British will always be too tired, and won’t have enough time and money,to have children.
1.The reason for young British people to live in their parents’ home until around 30 is that ________.
A.they enjoy family life with their parents
B.they don’t have enough money to get married
C.they just enjoy the lovers’ world
D.they can’t afford a house of their own before 30 years old
2.The British are now having fewer children than before for all the following reasons EXCEPT that ________.
A.they have fewer years to have children
B.they live much shorter lives than before
C.it is quite expensive to rear a child
D.the recent financial crisis are making people lose their job
3.In order to encourage people to have more children, the British government is ________.
A.bringing down foods’ prices
B.raising the salaries of parents
C.increasing subsidies for families and nursery schools
D.reducing family income tax
4.The underlined word “subsidies” in Paragraph 5 probably means “________”.
A.food supplied by the government
B.money from the government to benefit the public
C.free courses
D.free time to take care of their children

When I was 12,all I wanted was a signet(图章) ring. They were the “in” thing and it seemed every girl except me had one.On my 13th birthday,my Mum gave me a signet ring with my initials(姓名首字母) carved into it.I was in heaven.
What made it even more special was that it was about the only thing that wasn’t being “replaced”.We’d been burnt out in fires that swept through our area earlier that year and had lost everything—so most of the “new” stuff(东西) we got was really just to replace what we’d lost. But not my ring.My ring was new.
Then, only one month later,I lost it.I took it off before bed and it was missing in the morning.I was sad and searched everywhere for it.But it seemed to have disappeared.Eventually,I gave up and stopped looking for it.And two years later,we sold the house and moved away.
Years passed, and a couple of moves later,I was visiting my parents’ when Mum told me that she had something for me.It wasn’t my birthday, nor was it Easter or Christmas or any other gift-giving occasion.Mum noticed my questioning look.“You’ll recognize this one,” she said, smiling.
Then she handed me a small ring box.I took it from her and opened it to find my beautiful signet ring inside.
The family who had bought our house 13 years earlier had recently decided to do some redecorations, which included replacing the carpets. When they pulled the carpet up in my old bedroom, they found the ring.As it had my initials carved into it,they realized who owned the ring. They’d had it professionally cleaned up by a jeweler before sending it to my mother.
And it still fits me.
1.The underlined word “in” in the first paragraph probably means “________”.

三、阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
请阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
A punctual person is in the habit of doing a thing at the proper time and is never late in keeping an appointment.
The unpunctual man,on the other hand, never does what he has to do at the proper time.He is always in a hurry and in the end loses both time and his good name.A lost thing may be found again, but lost time can never be regained.Time is more valuable than material things. In fact, time is life itself. The unpunctual man is forever wasting and mismanaging his most valuable asset as well as others’.The unpunctual person is always complaining that he finds no time to answer letters,or return calls or keep appointments promptly. But the man who really has a great deal to do is very careful of his time and seldom complains of want of it.He knows that he can not get through huge amount of work unless he faithfully keeps every piece of work when it has to be attended to.
Failure to be punctual in keeping one’s appointments is a sign of disrespect towards others. If a person is invited to dinner and arrives later than the appointed time,he keeps all the other guests waiting for him.Usually this will be regarded as a great disrespect to the host and all other guests present.
Unpunctuality, moreover,is very harmful when it comes to doing one’s duty, whether public or private.Imagine how it would be if those who are put in charge of important tasks failed to be at their proper place at the appointed time.A man who is known to be habitually unpunctual is never trusted by his friends or fellow men.

There are many scientists that study people who often lived hundreds or even thousands of years ago,we call them anthropologists.Items those primitive men, women, and children left behind when they died—everything from clothing to jewelry and tools—tell anthropologists a lot.And sometimes even their words survive.
Experts believe that a discovery in Mexico is the oldest example of writing ever found in America. The people who created it probably lived 3,000 years ago, long before Christopher Columbus arrived in the New World.
Workers digging in a rock mine happened to notice a stone block with marks carved onto its surface. They found the large piece of stone near the city of Cascajal,Mexico, which was once the capital of an ancient people called the Olmec.
“There are signs on the block that seem to show objects used by the Olmec during their religious ceremonies,”says Dr. Stephen Houston,of Brown University in the US.“There is a sign that looks very similar to a knife and another that looks like the chair of a King,”he explains.
Houston,an expert on the writing systems of ancient cultures, says,“The discovery is exciting because it makes clear that the Olmec could read and write. It is like hearing voices from the past.”
But experts don’t know exactly what the writing says.Finding other examples of Olmec writing could help decipher_the_puzzle.
“We could have whole sets of ancient writing which will basically make ancient people speak to us directly,”says Houston.“There are many puzzles to be solved, and this is just one of them.”
40.According to the passage,in order to learn more about the past, what items do scientists often use?
A.Knives and chairs.

D.It is the evidence of the oldest form of writing ever found in America.

43.Which of the following can replace the underlined expression in Paragraph 6?

Wearing ties was originally the mark of Britain’s most powerful classes, which made the tie itself a symbol of power and respect. And that led it to be adopted by a much larger tribe—the business tribe.
You cannot wear a tie if you work with machinery. So wearing a tie became a sign that you were a man who used your brain to make a living, rather than your hands. It showed you were serious. It showed you were a professional. It meant that everyone who wanted a job in business had to wear one.It was just impossible to take seriously a man who didn’t wear a piece of colored silk around his neck.
This is how millions of people came to be wearing ties across the world. They are part of the uniform of business.
“Ties offer a point of indifference,” says John Milne, head of the British Guide of Tie Makers,“They give a chance to say something about their own personality.”
So if you happen to meet a man with a very brightly colored tie, there is a good chance that he is the office joker. There is also a good chance that he will be wearing brightly colored socks.
Is there a future for ties? The signs are not promising.Tie wearing seems to be rare among the new bread of entrepreneurs(创业者) in the Internet and new technology industries. Many political leaders, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, now go without ties. This shows they are men of the people—but not the people wearing ties.
Up until around 1960,it was common for men across the western world to wear hats as part of their business uniform. That changed with the election of John F.Kennedy to the presidency of the United States.Kennedy never wore a hat—in fact his nickname was “hatless Jack”.Seeing that the most powerful man in the world did not have to wear a hat, millions of other men decided that they did not have to,either.Hats simply vanished across the Western world.Perhaps “tieless Tony” (former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair) will have the same effect as “hatless Jack”.
44.In Britain,ties were first used as a sign to show a person’s ________.
A.personality B.social position
C.wearing style D.favorite hobby
45.In the business world, wearing a tie was necessary because ________.

Diana Jacobs thought her family had a workable plan to pay for college for her 21-year-old twin sons:a combination of savings, income, scholarships, and a modest amount of borrowing. Then her husband lost his job,and the plan fell apart.
“I have two kids in college, and I want to say ‘come home’,but at the same time I want to provide them with a good education,” says Jacobs.
The Jacobs family did work out a solution. They asked and received more aid from the schools, and each son increased his borrowing to the maximum amount through the federal loan (贷款) program. They will each graduate with $20,000 of debt, but at least they will be able to finish school.
With unemployment rising, financial aid administrators expect to hear from more families like the Jacobses.More students are applying for aid,and more families expect to need student loans.College administrators are concerned that they will not have enough aid money to go around.
At the same time, tuition (学费) continues to rise.A report from the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education found that college tuition and fees increased 439% from 1982 to 2007,while average family income rose just 147%.Student borrowing has more than doubled in the last decade.
“If we go on this way for another 25 years,we won’t have an affordable system of higher education,” says Patrick M.Callan, president of the center.“The middle class families have been financing it through debt. They will send kids to college whatever it takes, even if that means a huge amount of debt.”
Financial aid administrators have been having a hard time as many companies decide that student loans are not profitable enough and have stopped making them. The good news, however,is that federal loans account for about three quarters of student borrowing, and the government says that money will flow uninterrupted.
48.According to Paragraph 1,why did the plan of the Jacobs family fail?
A.The twins wasted too much money.
B.The father was out of work.
C.Their savings ran out.
D.The family fell apart.
49.How did the Jacobs family manage to solve their problem?
A.They asked their kids to come home.
B.They borrowed $20,000 from the schools.
C.They encouraged their twin sons to do part-time jobs.
D.They got help from the schools and the federal government.
50.Financial aid administrators believe that ________.
A.more families will face the same problem as the Jacobses
B.the government will receive more letters of complaint
C.college tuition fees will double soon
D.America’s unemployment will fall
51.According to the last paragraph, the government will ________.
A.provide most students with scholarships
B.dismiss some financial aid administrators
C.stop the companies from making student loans
D.go on providing financial support for college students

Shopping online in search of a bargain can often leave you feeling disappointed or out of pocket rather than satisfied. You can avoid this by following my simple advice:
PRODUCT—Before you look for the cheapest price, you need to decide what product you actually want. You can do this by searching online, the easiest way is to Google for different products so that you can decide on what would be best for you.
SEARCH & COMPARE—You are now ready to use a comparison website to try and find out the best prices. You should never just use one comparison website;using two or more will give you a balanced view of the market.Comparison websites are necessary.
You need to first check out what kind of technology a site uses.Although the idea behind Froogle (now called Google Products) is attractive, the technology it uses is not as advanced as sites such as Kelkoo and Pricerunner.Froogle uses a regular search engine.
And don’t expect price comparison sites to be a sure-fire way of getting a bargain. The sites will only show products from companies who pay them. This is not necessarily a bad thing—suppliers value their reputation and their business relationships.
AND SEARCH AGAIN—Before you buy you should search the product using a price comparison service, then try again just using a standard search engine—it might find the product with a cheaper price.
If you use Firefox to surf the web then there’s an add-on(附加的)tool that you can download which finds the cheapest price for a product for you.
It is called the Invisible Hand and it is free to download. For example,if you’re shopping online at Amazon, the Invisible Hand will pop_up and tell you that it is £ 56 cheaper at Dixons.
The tool will only work when you are looking at products,so it shouldn’t disturb your day to day internet surfing. The add-on is supported by well-known brands such as BT,Comet and HMV but obviously it won’t search every single site out there,so it is still best to use a comparison site in addition to the tool.
52.According to the passage, how to decide what product to buy?
A.By shopping online.
B.By searching online.
C.By looking for the cheapest price.
D.By deciding which is best.
53.We can learn from the passage that ________.
A.we don’t need to use two or more comparison websites
B.comparison websites often give us wrong views and choices
C.all the search engines are the same advanced
D.different comparison websites use different technologies
54.How many tips does the author give in the passage?
A.1. B.2. C.3. D.4.
55.What’s the exact meaning of the underlined phrase “pop up” in Paragraph 8?

As can be seen in the picture,a boy is holding a pair of huge scissors to cut a small piece of paper, but in vain.
The picture tries to tell us that a proper method plays a very important role in achieving a goal.In our daily life,we constantly need to carry out different task, whether they are simple or complicated. We should always keep in mind that adopting a proper method is the most important thing. If not, whatever efforts we make,we’ll accomplish nothing, just like the boy in the picture, who is using a wrong way to cut paper.Only in a correct way,can he tear the paper into pieces.
In my opinion, choosing a suitable method is very important both in our study and in our life.

There is no doubt that his death was a great loss, for so great a person died so young! It’s said that his statue was set up on a square of a foreign city to show respect.
Bruce Lee had a strong will.No matter what difficulties he met,he would try his best to challenge and overcome them. That’s just the quality we need when we want to do something well.
It’s beyond my words to express my admiration.Bruce Lee,you live in our heart forever!
