Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are on the mountains,in the waves,or on the grassland, you should be aware that your sport of choice might have great influence on the environment.
Some sports are resource-hungry.Golf,as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water.Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses(球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example,in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.
There are many environmentally friendly sports.Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes;and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse.Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit.If you walk regularly,it will be good for your heart and bones.Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.
Whatever sport you take up,you can make it greener by using environmentally friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”.They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers.Members of green gyms play sports outdoors,in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all,it’s free.

People turn to magic chiefly as a form of insurance—that is,they use it along with actions that actually bring results. For example, hunters may use a hunting charm(咒语).But they also use their hunting skills and knowledge of animals. The charm may give hunters the extra confidence they need to hunt even more successfully than they would without it.If they shoot a lot of game(猎物),they credit the charm for their success. Many events happen naturally without magic.Crops grow without it,and sick people get well without it.But if people use magic to bring a good harvest or to cure a patient, they may believe the magic was responsible.
People also tend to forget magic’s failures and to be impressed by its surface successes. They may consider magic successful if it appears to work only 10 percent of the time.Even when magic fails, people often explain the failure without doubting the power of the magic. They may say that the magician made a mistake in reciting the spell or that another magician cast a more powerful spell against the magician.
Many anthropologists(人类学家)believe that people have faith in magic because they feel a need to believe in it.People may turn to magic to reduce their fear and uncertainty if they feel they have no control over the outcome of a situation. For example, farmers use knowledge and skill when they plant their fields. But they know that weather, insects,or diseases might ruin the crops. So farmers in some societies may also plant a charm or perform a magic rite to ensure a good harvest.

We can achieve knowledge either actively or passively. We achieve it actively by direct experience,by testing and proving an idea,or by reasoning.
We achieve knowledge passively by being told by someone else. Most of the learning that takes place in the classroom and the kind that happens when we watch TV or read newspapers or magazines is passive.Conditioned as we are to passive learning,it’s not surprising that we depend on it in our everyday communication with friends and co-workers.
Unfortunately, passive learning has a serious problem. It makes us tend to accept what we are told even when it is little more than hearsay and rumor.
Did you ever play the game Rumor? It begins when one person writes down a message but doesn’t show it to anyone. Then the person whispers it,word for word,to another person. That person,in turn, whispers it to still another, and so on,through all the people playing the game. The last person writes down the message word for word as he or she hears it.Then the two written statements are compared.Typically, the original message has changed.
That’s what happens in daily life. The simple fact that people repeat a story in their own words changes the story. Then, too, most people listen imperfectly. And many enjoy adding their own creative touch to a story, trying to improve on it,stamping(打上标记) it with their own personal style.Yet those who hear it think they know.
This process is also found among scholars and authors:A statement of opinion by one writer may be restated as a fact by another, who may in turn be quoted by yet another;and this process may continue, unless it occurs to someone to question the facts on which the original writer based his opinion or to challenge the interpretation he placed upon those facts.
1.According to the passage, passive learning may occur in ________.
A.doing a medical experiment
B.solving a math problem
C.visiting an exhibition
D.doing scientific reasoning
2.The underlined word“it”in Paragraph 2 refers to “________”.
A.active learning
B.knowledge
C.communication
D.passive learning
3.The author mentions the game Rumor to show that ________.
A.a message may be changed when being passed on
B.a message should be delivered in different ways
C.people may have problems with their sense of hearing
D.people tend not to believe in what they know as rumor
4.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Active learning is less important.
B.Passive learning may not be reliable.
C.Active learning occurs more frequently.
D.Passive learning is not found among scholars.

“Old wives tales” are beliefs passed down from one
generation to another. For example, most of us remember our
parents’ telling us to eat more of certain foods or not to do
certain things. Is there any truth in these teachings? Some of
them agree with present medical thinking, but others have not passed the test of time.
Did your mother ever tell you to eat carrots because they are good for your eyes?Scientists now report that eating carrots can help prevent a serious eye disease called macular degeneration.Eating just one carrot a day can reduce the possibility of getting this disease by 40%.Garlic is good for you, too. It can kill the type of virus that causes colds.
Unfortunately, not all of Mom’s advice passed the test of medical studies. For example, generations of children have been told not to go swimming within an hour after eating. But research suggests that there is no danger in doing so.Do sweets cause tooth problems?Well, yes and no.Sticky sweets made with grains tend to cause more problems than sweets made with simple sugars.
Even though science can tell us that some of our traditional beliefs don’t hold_water,there is still a lot of truth in the old wives’ tales. After all, much of this knowledge has been accumulated from thousands of years of experience in family health care.We should respect this body of knowledge even as we search for clear scientific support to prove it true or false.
1.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A.Eating garlic is good for our eyes.
B.Sticky sweets are damaging to (有破坏性的)our teeth.
C.Swimming after a meal is dangerous.
D.Carrots prevent people from catching colds.
2.The author develops the third paragraph mainly ________.
A.by cause and effect
B.by order in space
C.by order in time
D.by examples
3.The phrase “hold water” in the last paragraph most probably means “________”.
A.to be believable B.to be valuable
C.to be admirable D.to be stable
4.What is the author’s attitude toward “old wives’ tales” in the text?
A.Subjective. B.Objective.
C.Dissatisfied. D.Curious.

三、阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
请阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

Lucky is the man who has no “skeleton in his closet”.When a man has done something in his life that he is ashamed of,that he wants to hide,he is said to have a “skeleton in his closet”.Some people may have more than one skeleton.
As we have noted many times,it is hard to find out how these expressions begin.Sometimes,we get some hard facts. But more often we have to depend on guesswork. And that is true of this phrase, which came from England.
Before 1932,English law did not permit a doctor to cut open a dead human body for scientific examination, unless it was the corpse(尸体) of an executed(处决) criminal.
But when it became legal, more and more doctors demanded skeletons for a more scientific study of medicine. It was helping in the advance of modern medicine. The demand had become so strong that men began to rob tombs and sell skeletons to doctors at high prices.
We are told that a doctor would usually buy just one skeleton for scientific study. It became very important in his work. But he had to keep it hidden because most people objected to keeping such a thing. As a rule, the doctor would keep his skeleton in some dark corner where it could not be seen,or hide it in a closet.
After a time, people began to suspect(怀疑) every doctor of hiding a skeleton in the closet. From this suspicion, the phrase “a skeleton in the closet” took on a broader, more general meaning to describe anything that a man wanted to keep others from discovering. It could be proof of a criminal act,or something much less serious.Well, that is one theory.
One writer, however, believes that the phrase might have come from something that really happened. It is his guess that a hidden closet in some old English country home may have turned up a real skeleton, clear proof of some old family shame or crime.Well, one man’s guess is as good as another. But this sounds like a story by the great French novelist,Balzac.
Balzac tells us of a man who suspected his wife of having a lover. The husband comes home by surprise. But she hears him and quickly hides her lover in the closet of her bedroom. He enters her room and asks her if she is hiding her lover. He says he will not open the door to the closet if she promises him there is no one there;he will believe her.She answers firmly that she is not hiding anyone in the closet.
The husband then begins to build a solid brick wall against the closet. His wife watches, knowing that her lover will never come out alive. But she will not change her story and admit her guilt.
36.Which of the following situations is suitable for using the phrase “skeleton in the closet”?
A.You have stolen something precious and don’t want it discovered.
B.You are a doctor and have to keep a skeleton for research.
C.If you have cut open a dead human body for scientific examination you should keep the skeleton secret.
D.You have done a crime or done something foolish, but you want to keep others from discovering it.
37.From the text we know that there are ________ theories about how the phrase “skeleton in the closet” came into being.
A.one B.two
C.three D.four
38.In Chinese the word “skeleton” means ________.
A.尸体 B.标本
C.收藏 D.骷髅
39.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A.In the 20th century, doctors realized the importance of anatomy(解剖) in the development of medicine.
B.The doctors of the ancient times liked to collect as many skeleton as possible.
C.The thieves stole skeletons from tombs in order to help the doctors.
D.It was legal that corpses of anybody were cut open for scientific examination in history.

After giving a talk at a high school,I was asked to pay a visit to a special student. An illness had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me.I was told it would mean a great deal to him,so I agreed.
During the nine-mile drive to his home,I found out something about Matthew. He had muscular dystrophy(肌肉萎缩症).When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to five, and then they were told he would not make it to ten.Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal power lifter, and I knew about overcoming obstacles and going for my dreams.
I spent over an hour talking to Matthew.Never_once_did_he_complain_or_ask,“Why_me?” He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams.Obviously,he knew what he was talking about. He didn’t mention that his classmates had made fun of him because he was different. He just talked about his hopes for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weights with me.When we finished talking,I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I had won and put it around his neck.I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming obstacles than I ever would. He looked at it for a moment, then took it off and handed it back to me.He said,“You are a champion. You earned that medal. Some day when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal,I will show it to you.”
Last summer I received a letter from Matthew’s parents telling me that Matthew had passed away. They wanted me to read a letter he had written to me a few days before:
Dear Dick,
My mum said I should send you a thank-you letter for the picture you sent me.I also want to let you know that the doctors tell me that I don’t have long to live any more, but I still smile as much as I can.
I told you some day I would go to the Olympics and win a gold medal, but I know now I will never get to do that. However,I know I’m a champion, and God knows that too. When I get to Heaven,God will give me my medal and when you get there,I will show it to you.Thank you for loving me.
Your friend,
Matthew

People do not analyze every problem they meet.Sometimes they try to remember a solution from the last time they had a similar problem. They often accept the opinions or ideas of other people.Other times they begin to act without thinking. They try to find a solution by trial and error. However, when all these methods fail, the person with a problem has to start analyzing. There are six stages in analyzing a problem.
First the person must recognize that there is a problem. For example,Sam’s bicycle is broken, and he cannot ride it to class as he usually does.Sam must see that there is a problem with his bicycle.
Next the thinker must define the problem. Before Sam can repair his bicycle,he must find out the reason why it does not work. For instance,he must determine if the problem is with the gears, the brakes,or the frame. He must make his problem more specific.
Now the person must look for information that will make the problem clearer and lead to possible solutions. For instance, suppose Sam decided that his bike does not work because there is something wrong with the gear wheels. At this time,he can look in his bicycle repair book and read about gears. He can talk to his friends at the bike shop.He can look at his gears carefully.
After studying the problem, the person should have several suggestions for a possible solution.Take Sam as an illustration. His suggestions might be:put oil on the gear wheels;buy new gear wheels and replace the old ones;tighten or loosen the gear wheels.
Eventually one suggestion seems to be the solution to the problem.Sometimes the final idea comes very suddenly because the thinker suddenly sees something new or sees something in a new way.Sam,for example, suddenly sees that there is a piece of chewing gum between the gear wheels. He immediately realizes the solution to his problem:He must clean the gear wheels.
Finally the solution is tested.Sam cleans the gear wheels and finds that afterwards his bicycle works perfectly. In short,he has solved the problem.

The British National Health Service (NHS) was set up in 1948 and was designed to provide equal basic health care, free of charge, for everybody in the country. Before this time health care had to be paid for by individuals.
Nowadays central government is directly responsible for the NHS although it is administered by local health authorities.About 83 percent of the cost of the health service is paid for by general taxation and the rest is met from the National Insurance contributions paid by those in work. There are charges for prescription and dental care but many people, such as children, pregnant women, pensioners, and those on Income Support, are exempt from payment.
Most people are registered with a local doctor (a GP,or General Practitioner) who is increasingly likely to be part of a health centre which serves the community.
As the population of Britain gets older, the hospital service now treats more patients than before, although patients spend less time in hospital.NHS hospitals—many of which were built in the nineteenth century—provide nearly half a million beds and have over 480,000 medical staff. The NHS is the biggest employer in Europe although Britain actually spends less per person on health care than most of her European neighbours.
During the 1980s there was considerable restructuring of the Health Service with an increased emphasis on managerial efficiency and the privatization of some services (for example, cleaning). At the end of the 1980s the government introduced proposals for further reform of the NHS,including allowing some hospitals to be self-governing,and encouraging GPs to compete for patients.Patients would be able to choose and change their family doctor more easily and GPs would have more financial responsibility. The political questions continue of how much money should be provided to support the NHS and where it should come from.
48.We can know from the first paragraph that ________.
A.the original aim of the NHS was to provide equal basic health care for everybody
B.people didn’t have to pay for health care since the NHS was set up
C.patients were charged for receiving health care before 1948
D.the NHS was an organization which gave free advice to villagers
49.What do we know about the NHS?
A.It’s managed by the central government.
B.Its cost is mainly paid for by the National Insurance contributions.
C.It hires more people than any other unit in Europe.
D.Fewer patients go to its hospitals than before because they spend less on health care.
50.All the following statements about GPs are true EXCEPT that they ________.
A.take care of the local people’s health
B.often take part in competitions to see who is the best
C.work under high pressure nowadays
D.have more responsibilities than before
51.What does the underlined word “exempt” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.suffering B.different
C.prevented D.free

Jeanne Calment,a French woman, became a record breaker on 17 October of 1995.When at the age of 120 years and 238 days, she became the longest-lived human being on record.A Japanese man died in 1986 at the age of 120 years and 237 days.
Jeanne Calment lives in a small old people’s home in the south of France;her husband, her only child and her grandson have all died. She is nearly blind and deaf and is always in a wheelchair, but her doctor describes her as being more like a 90-year-old in good health than someone of 120.She still has a lively sense of humor. When asked on her 120th birthday what she expected of the future, she replied:A very short one.She also remarked that she thought the good Lord had forgotten all about her.
So what is the key to a long life? According to some doctors, diet, exercise and no smoking are the three important factors.Jeanne Calment has followed two of the tips(窍门).She has always eaten a healthy diet, and she used to do exercises every day until she broke her leg at the age of 115.However,until recently she drank two glasses of strong red wine a day,and she does smoke (now only a little).Besides,Jeanne Calment might have got very good genes(基因) from her parents. Her father lived to the age of 94 and her mother to 86.
A local lawyer bought her house when she was 80 under an agreement that he would pay her some money every year until her death. It must have seemed a good move at the time, but so far the lawyer has paid her at least three times the value of the house.Every year on her birthday Jeanne Calment sends him a card saying:
Sorry,I’m still alive!
52.How does Jeanne Calment feel about her old age?
A.She is miserable and unhappy.
B.She is cheerful and humorous.
C.She would like to live much longer.
D.She feels she is going to die very soon.
53.Jeanne Calment owes her good health and long life to ________.
A.smoking only a little every day
B.her giving up smoking and drinking
C.drinking two glasses of strong red wine every day
D.the good genes from her parents,a healthy diet and some exercises
54.Which of the following could best replace the word “move” in the fourth paragraph?
A.deal B.trick
C.march D.sport
55.Why does Jeanne Calment say “Sorry,I’m still alive!” to the local lawyer every year on her birthday?
A.Because she had an agreement at 80 with the lawyer which was to her advantage.
B.Because she has asked the lawyer to pay her more rent than they first agreed.
C.Because the lawyer has paid her much more money than the value of the house.
D.Because the house she sold to the lawyer isn’t worth the money he has already paid.

Encouragement can serve as a ray of hope during difficult times. The best ones to encourage a depressed soul are our friends.
It was a year ago that I just began to attend high school. For the first time I failed in an English exam which I had thought I was best at.I felt very depressed. My best friend,Lily, tried to comfort me,offering her emotional support. She listened to me carefully and told me Edison succeeded in inventing the electric bulb after failing more than 300 times.Eventually, with her patient encouragement,I overcame depression and was determined to try hard again. In the next exam,I did it.
Encouragement is the best means to help someone feel better. It can give someone the courage to fight difficulties and motivate someone to move on.
