Electric Shock
Injuries caused by electric shock are fairly common. When a person has received an electric shock,no one should go near him/her until the current has been turned off.
If a shock occurring at work or at home causes someone to lose consciousness(知觉), electrical connection must be broken before anyone tries to give assistance. You should either turn off the switch at the mains or,if that is not possible, push the person away with a dry piece of wood.
Treatment of Shock

Shock can prove fatal, and it is essential to do something to prevent its developing. The best way to treat or prevent shock is to keep the patient lying down , better with the legs higher than the head;if possible, raise the lower part of the body on a rolledup packet or similar object. Make the patient as comfortable as possible, loosening any tight clothing, and comfort him/her because fright increases the effects of shock.

Towards the end of Middle English.a sudden change in pronunciation started, with vowels(元音)being pronounced shorter and shorter. From the 16th century the British had contact(接触)with many people from around the world. This meant that lots of new vocabulary entered the language. The invention of printing also meant that there was now a common language in print.Books became cheaper and more people learned to read.Spelling and grammar became fixed, and the dialect of London became the standard. In 1604 the first English dictionary came out.21*cnjy*com
Early Modern English and Late Modern English are mostly different in the number of words.Late Modern English has many more words, mainly because of the following two reasons:First, the Industrial Revolution(工业革命)led to the need for new words.Second, the British Empire covered one quarter of the earth's surface, and the English language took in foreign words from many countries.
From around 1600,the English colonization(殖民地化)of North America led to American English. Some English pronunciations and words“froze”when they reached America. In some ways,American English is more like the English of Shakespeare than modern British English. Some expressions that are called “American English”are in fact from British expressions. They were kept in the colonies while lost for a time in Britain.Spanish also had an influence(影响)on American English. For example, words like canyon, ranch, stampede and vigilante are from Spanish. They entered English by the people of Spain who settled in the American West.French words and West African words also influenced American English.

Why are so many of our public schools failing?Diane Ravitch, former US assistant secretary of education, gives her opinion. Ravitch points out that the educati on reform(改革)efforts of the past ten years have not noticed the fact that the cause of low academics(学业)in America is poverty(贫困)not“bad” teachers.[来源:21世纪教育网]2·1·c·n·j·y
Historically, there has always been a connection between education and the reduction of poverty. Free public schools in America were created to reduce poverty by giving every child the opportunity to receive an education. So the question is, does education lower poverty or does poverty lower education?
In the 18th century, although only wealthy children had the chance to go to school, all parents, including the poor, were required to educate their children. If families were so irresponsible as to fail to educate their children, the community(社区)would take those kids away and do the job for them!
No matter what their income, families are the most important educators for their children. And children who do not receive enough education at home are at risk. So,education reform should begin in the home. If a child enters first grade unable to know his ABC or count to 10,who is responsible? If the family is unable to provide proper support, there should be some type of aid to make sure that the child is not left behind.
Besides, our public schools should be improved, not destroyed. Many of our schools are failing for reasons that have little to do with education and a lot to do with larger socioeconomic problems such as poverty, unemployment, violence, and, in many families, the belief that education will not make a difference. We need to fight these conditions.
Ensuring quality education requires a collective effort that includes schools, parents, students, employers, and the government. We're all part of this. The government can't do it alone with topdown orders. The goal must be to help parents and children appreciate the importance of a good education.

Tracey Webb and her husband Keith were driving friends home to Tavistock late on 11 May when they saw two cars that had just crashed badly.
The couple had only completed their first aid training on the previous day, but they didn't hesitate(犹豫)to act. Tracey said, “We stopped our car, and our friend Drew called 999. I ran to the cars first and checked the people. Both drivers were very shocked, but they were up and walking around. Can you imagine that you can save your own life during a heart attack by coughing?Let's see how...
A heart attack can happen to anyone.Let's say it's 4:17 p.m. and you're driving home(alone of course)after an unusually hard day on the job.Not only was the workload extremely heavy, you also had a disagreement with your boss, and no matter how hard you tried,he just wouldn't see your side of the situation. You're really upset and the more you think about it,the more nervous you become.
All of a sudden you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to spread out into your arm and up into your jaw(下巴).You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home, unfortunately you don't know if you'll be able to make it that far.21·cn·jy·com
What can you do?You've been trained in CPR but the guy who taught the course didn't tell you how to perform it on yourself.21世纪教育网
Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, this article seems in order. Without help the person whose heart stops beating properly and who begins to feel faint(眩晕的)has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. However these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very powerfully. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and last long,as when producing sputum(痰)from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without stopping until help arrives,or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs(肺)and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating.
The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a phone and, between breaths, call for help.
Now,do you understand the whole matter? Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save their lives!
53.According to the passage, CPR is most probably something done to ______.

54.According to Paragraph 5,coughing during a heart attack helps ______.
A.to relax the heart

55.We can learn from the passage that ______.
A.a long day's work usually results in heart attacks2-1-c-n-j-y
B.not only the chestache when one suffers a heart attack
C.people should attend a CPR course to survive heart attacks

[1]Medical research is leading American education officials to consider having high school classes start later in the morning. The research says that teenagers are more awake later at night than adults are. When staying up late at night, the teenagers have problems learning early in the morning.
[2] Researchers in the state of Rhode Island measured the amount of the hormone(荷尔蒙)melatonin(降黑素)in people's mouths at different times of the day.Melatonin causes people to feel sleepy.
[3]They found that melatonin levels rise later at night in teenagers than they do in children and adults. It remains at higher levels in teenagers later in the morning. They said this shows that teenagers have difficulty learning early in the morning.Yet most school systems in the United States begin high school classes at about seven o'clock.
[4] A few school districts have made some changes. In 1996,school officials in Edina,Minnesota, changed the start of classes from seven thirty to eight thirty. Two years later, the nearby city of Minneapolis did the same.Teachers there reported that students were no longer sleepy in class and were happier.Staying in school later in the day did not seem to be a problem for students who had jobs after school either.
[5] Health experts say that teenagers need between eight and nine hours of sleep a night.Students ______ are likely to be late for school, fail to do their homework, fall asleep in class and have trouble taking part in class discussions.
[6] Some people, however, don't support a later start time because they say that it would limit the time for practicing sports after school. However, the Minnesota schools found that this did not hurt school sports competitions.
[7] More American school districts are discussing the possibility of changing high school start times.Researchers and teenagers say that they cannot make the change quickly enough.
