Unit3 Discovering Useful Structures and Listening and Talking
America’s Beauty Is in Its Diversity
America is built on the idea of freedom, and there is no exception for Muslim women. I believe in the freedom of religion and speech. But mostly, I believe it’s OK to be 1 , and to stand up for who and what you are. So I believe in wearing the hijab.
The hijab is a religious head covering, like a scarf. I am a Muslim, and keeping my head covered is a 2 of maturity and respect towards my 3 and to Allah’s will. To be honest, I also like to wear it to be different. I don’t usually like to do what everyone else is doing. I want to be a(n) 4 , not just part of the crowd. But when I first wore it, I was also afraid of the 5 that I’d get at school.
I decided on my own that sixth grade was the 6 I should start wearing the hijab. I was 7 of what the kids would say or even do to me. I thought they might make fun of me, or even be scared of me and 8 my head-scarf. Kids at that age usually like to be all the same, and there’s little or no acceptance of differences.
On the first day of school, I put all those 9 thoughts behind my back and walked in with my head held high. I was holding my breath a little, but 10 I was also proud to be a Muslim, proud to be wearing the hijab, and proud to be different.
I was 11 about everything I thought the kids would say or even do to me. I actually met a lot of people because of wearing my head covering. Most of the kids would come and ask me questions— 12 —the hijab and why I wore it.
I did hear some kids were making fun of me, 13 there was one girl—she wasn’t even in my class, and we never really talked much—and she spoke 14 me, and I wasn’t even there! I made a lot of new friends that year, friends that I still have until this very day, five years later.
Yes, I’m different, but everyone is different here, in one way or another. This is the beauty of America, which lies in its 15 .

II.七选五
Before there was the written word, there was the language of dance. Dance expresses love and hate, joy and sorrow, life and death, and everything else in between.
1 We dance from Florida to Alaska, from north to south and sea to sea. We dance at weddings, birthdays, office parties and just to fill the time.
“I adore dancing,” says Lester Bridges, the owner of a dance studio in Iowa. “I can’t imagine doing anything else with my life.” Bridges runs dance classes for all ages. “Teaching dance is wonderful. 2 It’s great to watch them. For many of them, it’s a way of meeting people and having a social life.”
3 “I can tell you about one young couple,” says Bridges. “They’re learning to do traditional dances. They arrive at the class in low spirits and they leave with a smile. 4 ”
So, do we dance in order to make ourselves feel better, calmer, healthier Andrea Hillier says, “Dance, like the pattern of a beating heart, is life. Even after all these years, I want to get better and better. 5 I find it hard to stop! Dancing reminds me I’m alive.”
A. So why do we dance
B. Dance in the U.S. is everywhere.
C. If you like dancing outdoors, come to America.
D. My older students say it makes them feel young.
E. I keep practicing even when I’m extremely tired.
F. Dancing seems to change their feeling completely.
G. They stayed up all night long singing and dancing.

a sign of…
根据 not just part of the crowd可知作者想突显自己的个性,不想随大流。
in favor of意为“支持;赞同”。
根据标题“America’s Beauty Is in its Diversity”可知此处指美国的多样性。
II.
