Homestay provides English language learners with the opportunity to speak English outside the classroom and the experience of being part of a British home.
What to Expect
The host will provide accommodation and meals. Rooms will be cleaned and bedcover changed at least once a week. You will be given the house key and the host is there to offer help and advice as well as to take an interest in your physical and mental health.
Accommodation Zones
Homestays are located in London mainly in Zones 2,3 and 4 of the transport system. Most hosts do not live in the centre as much of central London is commercial and not residential(居住).Zones 3 and 4 often offer larger accommodation in a less crowded area. It is very convenient to travel in London by Underground.
Meal Plans Available
Continental Breakfast
Breakfast and Dinner
Breakfast,Packed Lunch and Dinner
It's important to note that few English families still provide a traditional cooked breakfast. Your accommodation includes Continental Breakfast which normally consists of fruit juice, cereal(谷类早餐食物),bread and tea or coffee. Cheese, fruit and cold meat are not normally part of a Continental Breakfast in England. Dinners usually consist of meat or fish with vegetables followed by dessert, fruit and coffee.
Friends
If you wish to invite a friend over to visit, you must first ask your host’s permission. You have no right to entertain friends in a family home as some families feel it is an invasion of their privacy.
Self-Catering Accommodation in Private Homes
Accommodation on a room-only basis includes shared kitchen and bathroom facilities and often a main living room. This kind of accommodation offers an independent lifestyle and is more suitable for the long-stay students. However,it does not provide the same family atmosphere as an ordinary homestay and may not benefit those who need to practise English at home quite as much.

[湖北武汉华师一附中2019高一期末]At first glance.,the business world is no place for young women as my confounders and I have been told on many occasions. In spite of this pessimistic view of women's opportunity in business,we three college-age girls with zero experience in business started off with a highly ambitious goal:to start a seaweed farm in North Carolina, and grow as much seaweed as possible to help reduce carbon emissions(排放量)and nutrient pollution from agricultural sources.
In the beginning, our ideas were either ignored or scoffed by the researchers from whom we sought help and advice. But we carried on with our research-if others wouldn't provide us answers,we weren't afraid to try to work them out ourselves. We discovered which species could grow in warmer waters, and we'd identified potential markets into which we planned to sell the product. We've spent the last two years setting up the first seaweed farm in NC,applying for a patent(专利)and competing with five final teams in front of the United Nations for $1 million.
Despite all of our efforts, many industry experts remained unwilling to take us seriously. But as often happens in business, the same charaeteristies we were ignored for were,in reality, our biggest competitive advantages. Our age gave us the strength to bounce back from failure, and our background as environmental scientists, rather than businesswomen, helped us find new marketing opportunities. For every 10 farmers who claimed nobody would ever want to feed their cows seaweed, we found one who was interested. For every 15 cosmetics producers who refused to answer our cold calls,we stuck to the one with an interesting idea for seaweed lotion.
Over the course of our early business development efforts,we have had access to a wealth of resources, programmes, and individuals who work constantly to help us succeed. By staying focused on bringing our ideas to light, our team has demonstrated that entrepreneurship(创业) is exactly the right place for the hopeful.
5.What was the major cause for their difficulty in starting business?
A. They were women.
B. They were young.
C. They lacked experience.
D. They suffered prejudice.
6.What did they do to make their business suceessful according to the passage?
A. They expanded their seaweed farms.
B. They experimented on seaweed species.
C. They got their product officially recognized.
D. They consulted the United Nations.
7.What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A. How they benefited from their weaknesses.
B. How they got others interested in seaweed.
C. How they made themselves more competitive.
D. How they approached potential customers
8.Which of the following can best describe the three women?
A. Naive and simple-minded.
B. Ambitious and self-centred.
C. Adventurous and persistent.
D. Stubborn and courageous.
C
Culture shock is the psychological (心理上的) shock of having to adapt to new environments and new cultures which may be completely different from your own. To understand what culture is.
Culture shock is caused by the feelings that result from losing all familiar signs and symbols of social intercourse (交流). Those signs include the ways with which we are familiar in daily life: When to shake hands and what to say when we meet people When and how to give tips How to go shopping When to accept and when to refuse invitations These signs, which may be words, gestures, facial expressions or customs, are gained by all of us in the course of growing up and are as much a part of our culture as the language we speak.
During the first few weeks when a person enters a strange culture, most people are attracted by the new. But this "cook's tour" type of mentality (心态) does not normally last if the foreign visitor remains abroad and has to seriously deal with real conditions of life. He may feel anxious and frustrated (沮丧的). People react to the frustration in the same way. During the first period, they reject the environment which causes the discomfort. "The ways of the host country are bad because they make us feel bad, "they complain about the host country and its people. The following period is homesickness. The home environment suddenly becomes so important that all difficulties and problems are forgotten and only the good things back home are remembered.
Experiencing culture shock can be very difficult. There is a risk of sickness or emotional problems. However, culture shock can be part of a positive learning experience. Be patient! It is a process of adaptation to new situations. If you do like this, you will be a much stronger person, and you will be a citizen of the world.
9. What causes culture shock
A. The loss of one story.
B. The doubt about one's cultural identity.
C. The removal of one,'s familiar signs.
D. The differences in languages.
10. Which of the following does a person first experience after arriving abroad
A. Homesickness.
B. Memory.
C. Adaptation.
D. Curiosity.
11. What is the writer's attitude towards culture shock
A Positive.
B Cautious.
C. Doubtful.
D.Uninterested.

Whenever something looks interesting or beautiful, there is a natural desire of us to capture(捕捉)and preserve it, which means,in this day and age, that we are likely to reach for our phones to take a picture.
Though this would seem to be an ideal solution, there are two big problems associated with taking pictures. Firstly, we are likely to be so busy taking pictures that we forget to look at the word whose beauty and interest encourage us to take a photograph in the first place. And secondly, because we feel the pictures are safely stored on our phones, we never get around to looking at them. So sure are we that we'll get around to them one day.
The first person to notice the problems was the English art critic(评论家),John Ruskin. He was a keen traveller who realised that most tourists make a poor job of noticing or remembering the beautiful things they see. He argued that humans have a natural tendency to respond to beauty and desire to have it,but there are better and worse expressions of this desire. At worst,we get into buying souvenirs or taking photographs. But,in Ruskin's eyes, there's just one thing we should do-attempting to draw the interesting things we see, regardless of whether we happen to have any talent for doing so.
Ruskin said,"Drawing can teach us to see:to notice properly rather than gaze absent-mindedly. In the process of recreating with our own hands what lies before our eyes,we naturally move from a position of observing beauty in a loose way to one where we acquire a deep understanding of its parts."
Ruskin deplored the blindness and hurry of modern tourists, especially those who prided themselves on travelling around the whole Europe in a week by train,"Changing of places at a hundred miles an hour will not make us stronger, happier,or wiser. There was always more in the world than men could see if they ever walked slowly;they will see it no better for going fast. The really precious things are thoughts and sights, not pace.”
12.According to paragraph 2,what do people tend to do when taking pictures?
A. Forget to appreciate something attractive on the spot.
B. Find it hard to learn skills of taking good pictures.
C. Find a good way to keep things in their minds.
D. Have a chance to meet the challenge of new technology.
13.According to Ruskin, what should travellers do to best express their appreciation of and desire for something beautiful?
A. To speak it out openly.
B. To photograph it instant.
C. To purchase it immediately.
D. To paint it directly.
14.From the fourth paragraph,we can infer that Ruskin encourages us to be___.
A. considerate and determined.
B. active and adventurous.
C. creative and thoughtful.
D. sensitive and ambitious.
15.What does the underlined word "deplored" in the last paragraph mean?
A. Appreciated
B. Criticised
C. Favoured
D. Ignored

Third-Culture Kids
Did you grow up in one culture, your parents come from another, and you are now living in a totally different country? If so,then you are a third-culture kid!
The term "third-culture kid"(or TCK)was first used in the 1960s by Dr Ruth. She first came across this phenomenon when she researched North American children living in India. Caught between two cultures, they form their very own. 16 About 90 percent of them have a university degree, while 40 percent pursue a master or doctor degree. They usually benefit from their intercultural experience, which helps them to grow into successful academics and professionals
17 In fact, many hardships may arise from this phenomenon. A third-culture kid may not be able to adapt themselves completely to their new surroundings as expected. Instead, they may always remain an outsider in different host cultures. Max,for example, experienced this feeling of strangeness throughout his life as a third-culture kid. 18 While this can be a way to create a network of friends all around the world,it can be difficult for a third-culture kid like Max to maintain close friendships and relationships.
For a third-culture kid,it is often easier to move to a new foreign country than to return to their "home" country. After living in Australia and Japan for many years,Louis finally returned to Turkey as a teenager. But she felt out of place when she returned to the country where she was born. 19 She did not share the same values as her friends 'even years after going back home.
While a third-culture kid must let go of their identity as a foreigner when he/she returns, the home country can prove to be more foreign than anything he/she came across before. The peer group they face does not match the idealised(理想化的)
As a part of the growing “culture",TCKs may find it a great challenge for them to feel at home in many places image children have of "home". 20
A. Yet being a third-culture kid is not always easy.
B. In general, they often reach excellent academic results.
C. This often makes it hard for them to form their own identity.
D. However, their parents can help them see the opportunities of a mobile lifestyle.
E. Their experience abroad helps them to understand cultural differences better.
F. Unlike other teens of her age,she didn't know anything about current TV shows or fashion trends.
G. Additionally, making new friends and saying goodbye to old ones will at some point become routine for a third-culture kid.

I went up to the roof for a break after studying for an hour and watched the 50 or so people swimming in the natural rock pool below our house. It was a sunny day-a blue, cloudless sky over a calm sea. But then,as I looked in the distance,I discovered a series of three or four big waves heading towards the shore. I'd seen these mini-tsunamis(海啸)many times before. They were heading at speed in the direction of the pool. Most people knew how to look out for them, but from the screams that started coming from the beach,I could tell someone was in trouble.
Without thinking,I ran down into the street, holding my bodyboard(俯伏冲浪板)on the way,and shouted at a stranger to go inside my house and call the coastguard. My neighbour Moises had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his bodyboard,so together we rushed to the steps that led down to the sea.
Once we got closer,we discovered the waves had pulled a boy and a girl from the pool and into the open sea. I knew that the nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to reach us. Waiting for help wasn't a choice. I wasn't used to this sort of emergency-I'd never been trained as a lifeguard-but I didn't think twice about trying to save them. I supposed in a way I wanted to impress everyone:at 19,a deal like that can seem like a good opportunity to show off.
Moises and I dived into the water and it took us 10 minutes to get to them. When we finally reached them, they were almost lifeless with only their heads coming in and out of the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear they wouldn't have been able to stay there much longer. I held the boy and pulled him over my board. Moises moved the girl onto his board. We discussed pushing them back to the shore, but we were too far out.

We had to wait, eagerly hoping for the arrival of the saving boat. The wildly wind blew and the freezing sea water clapped our bodies continuously. That night, word came from the hospital that the two people were in good condition. When I pictured what the merry scene would be, relied lay in my heart and happiness was etched on my face. The next morning, people all I met smiled to me and could not stop praising me. It seemed like a god opportunity to show off, but I didn't mean to. In fact, I was ashamed I had thought about it. It occurred to me that helping others was priceless and everyone should be a lifeguard.
