The theme of this unit focuses on “space exploration.”The text is mainly about the development of space exploration. On the one hand, the text helps students to have a good understanding about the great feats humans have achieved, on the other hand, they will further understand the contributions that we Chinese have achieved, and feel confident and proud about our homeland and strengthen their love for our country. The teacher should instruct students to aim high and study harder to make great progress in the space career if possible.
1. Learn about the development and significant historical events of space exploration.
2. Analyze the structure of the article and summarize the main idea of the text.
3. Express their opinions on space exploration.

Step 1 Lead-in(video clip watching) 1.Play a video clip from the film “Star Trek “(星际迷航)2. Ask students the question:
What do you think are the main reasons for space exploration Enjoy the clip.Students state their opinions regarding the question: To explore strange new worlds,to seek out new life forms and civilizations, to boldly(勇敢地) go where no man has gone before.” 激发学生的学习兴趣,激活与主题相关的背景知识,同时对人类探索太空的原因发表自己的见解。
Step2 Prediction Teacher instructs the students to analyse the titles, pictures and predict the content:Q: What do you expect to read about in this text?history; accidents.... Students read the titles and illustrations and give their prediction. 阅读前指导学生根据文章标题和配图预测文本内容,为接下来的阅读做好准备。

Teacher instructs the students to choose the correct sentences (A-D)to fill each gap.Tips : Pay attention to the linking words (also; after) andsequence words( although) in the sentences. Step 5 Reading for detailed information Teacher instructs the students to read para2 and para4. Introducing the question “Were the space missions always successful If not, what might happen to space missions ” Read para 2 and 4 to find out the main events home and abroad. 培养学生扫读和概括能力。
Step 6 Watch a short video clip Thinking and discussion :1.Were the space missions always successful If not, what might happen to space missions 2.What does the title mean to you Students have a discussion to state their opinions. 培养学生的批判性和创造性思维。
