If the Olympic Games are a history of mankind, wrestling(摔跤) is the
prologue(序幕).When the ancient Games of the Olympiad were born,
wrestling was already an ancient game.Widely recognized as the world’s
oldest competitive sport, wrestling appeared in a series of Egyptian wall paintings as early as 5,000 years ago. When the ancient Olympic Games began in 776 BC,more than two thousand years later,it included wrestling and in the years that followed, wrestling featured as the main event.
The sport would return in a similar role when the Olympic Games returned after a 1,500-year absence in 1896.Organizers,seeking direct links to ancient times, found wrestling was very popular across much of the ancient world, from Greece,Assyria and Babylon to India,China and Japan.Greco-Roman wrestling,a style which was believed to be passed down from the Greek and Roman wrestlers of old was brought back into use.
In Greco-Roman wrestling, the wrestlers used only their arms and upper bodies to attack. They could hold only those same parts of their opponents(对手).It worked nicely from a historical attitude, but another cheerful and relaxing style was sweeping across Great Britain and the United States by then.Known as “catch as catch can”,it had become popular at fairs and festivals in both countries.
In 1904,the Olympic Games added the second wrestling event and called it “freestyle”.Now,wrestlers could use their legs for pushing, lifting and tripping, and they could hold opponents above or below the waist.

A hobby can be almost anything a person likes to do in his spare time.Hobbyists raise pets, build model ships, weave baskets, watch birds, hunt animals, climb mountains, raise flowers, fish, ski, skate and swim.Hobbyists also paint pictures, attend concerts and plays, and perform on musical instruments. They collect everything from books to butterflies and from shells to stamps.
People take up hobbies because these activities offer enjoyment, friendship, knowledge, and relaxation.Sometimes they even give financial profit.Hobbies help people relax after periods of hard work, and provide a balance between work and play.
Hobbies also offer interesting activities for persons who have retired.Anyone, rich or poor, old or young, sick or well, can follow a satisfying hobby, regardless of his age, position,or income.Hobbies can help a person’s mental and physical health.Doctors have found that hobbies are valuable in helping patients recover from physical or mental illness.Hobbies give bedridden or wheel-chair patients something to do,provide interests that keep them from thinking about themselves. Many hospitals treat patients by having them take up interesting hobbies or pastimes (娱乐).
In early times, most people were too busy making a living to have many hobbies. But some persons who had spare time did enjoy hobbies. The ancient Egyptians played games with balls made of wood, pottery.People today have more time than ever before for hobbies.

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver,I was driving to my parents’ home in Missouri for Christmas.I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台),I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took_off,but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car.I stopped and wondered what I should do.A car pulled up behind me.It was the couple who I had spoken to at the gas
station. They said they would take me to my friend’s.We chatted on the way into the city, and when I get out of the car,the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me.Soon afterward,I received a Christmas present from them.Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later,I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I’d left the lights on all day,and the battery(电池) was dead. Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership—a shop selling cars—was right next door.I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
“Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?”I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it.They would accept no payment. So when I got home,I wrote them a note to say thanks.I received a letter back from one of the salesmen.“No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you,and it meant a lot,”he said.“Thank you”—two powerful words. They’re easy to say and mean so much.

I am a writer.I spend a great deal of my time thinking about the power of language—the way it can evoke(唤起)an emotion,a visual image,a complex idea,or a simple truth.Language_is_the_tool_of_my_trade.And I use them all—all the Englishes I grew up with.
Born into a Chinese family that had recently arrived in California,I’ve been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks.Like others,I have described it to people as “broken” English. But I feel embarrassed to say that.It has always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than “broken”,as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed,as if it lacked a certain wholeness.I’ve heard other terms used,“limited English,”for example. But they seem just as bad,as if everything is limited, including people’s perceptions (认识) of the limited English speaker.
I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up,my mother’s “limited” English limited my perception of her.I was ashamed of her English.I believed that her English reflected the quality of what she had to say. That is,because she expressed them imperfectly as if her thoughts were imperfect. And I had plenty of evidence to support me:the fact that people in department stores,at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her,or even acted as if they did not hear her.
I started writing fictions in 1985.And for reasons I won’t get into today,I began to write stories using all the Englishes I grew up with:the English she used with me,which for lack of a better term might be described as“broken”;and what I imagine to be her translation of her Chinese, her internal(内在的)language, and for that I sought to preserve the essence, but neither an English nor a Chinese structure.I wanted to catch what language ability tests can never show:her intention, her feelings, the rhythms of her speech and the nature of her thoughts.
1.By saying “Language is the tool of my trade”,the author means that________.
A.she uses English in foreign trade
B.she is fascinated by languages
C.she works as a translator
D.she is a writer by profession
2.The author used to think of her mother’s English as ________.
A.impolite B.amusing
C.imperfect D.practical
3.Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 3?
A.Americans do not understand broken English.
B.The author’s mother was not respected sometimes.
C.The author’s mother had positive influence on her.
D.Broken English always reflects imperfect thoughts.
4.The author gradually realizes her mother’s English is ________.
A.well structured B.in the old style
C.easy to translate D.rich in meaning

At the age of ten I could not figure out what this Elvis Presley guy had that the rest of us boys did not have.I mean,he had a head, two arms and two legs, just like the rest of us.About nine o’clock on Saturday morning I decided to ask Eugene Correthers, one of the older boys, what it was that made this Elvis guy so special. He told me that it was Elvis’ wavy hair and the way he moved his body.
About half an hour later all the boys in the orphanage(孤儿院) were called to the main dining-room and told we were all going to downtown Jacksonville,Florida to get a new pair of Buster Brown shoes and a hair cut.That_is_when_I_got_this_big_idea,which_hit_me_like_a_ton_of_bricks.If the Elvis hair cut was the big secret, then that’s what I was going to get.
On the way to town I told everybody, including the matron(女管家) from the orphanage who was taking us to town, that I was going to look just like Elvis Presley and that I would learn to move around just like he did and that I would be rich and famous one day, just like him.
When I got my new Buster Brown shoes,I could hardly wait for my new hair cut and now that I had my new Buster Brown shoes I would be very happy to go back to the orphanage and practice being like Elvis.
We finally arrived at the big barber shop, where they cut our hair for free because we were orphans(孤儿).I looked at the barber and said,“I want an Elvis hair cut.Can you make my hair like Elvis?”I asked him, with a big smile on my face.“Let’s just see what we can do for you, little man,”he said.I was so happy when he started to cut my hair.Just as he started to cut my hair, the matron signed for him to come over to where she was standing. She whispered something into his ear and then he shook his head, like he was telling her “No”.Then he told me they were not allowed to give us Elvis hair cuts. Then I saw my hair falling onto the floor.
5.In the author’s eyes,Elvis Presley was________.
A.disgusting B.admirable

7.We can learn from the underlined sentence that the boy was________.

My wife and I sat there and looked at her.We __17__ that people walked by and didn’t even pet her.And we also did not do anything. But someone did.The homeless man,who I __18__ did not buy himself anything to eat, went back into the store. And what he did brought tears to me and my wife.He had gone into the store and with what __19__ he may have had, bought a can of dog food and fed that dog.

Many people think it is safe to use a cellphone while they are driving.Yet scores of studies suggest that real multitaskers—those who can__36__out multiple tasks equally well, make up just 2 percent of the population.More surprisingly, the so-called “supertaskers”__37__have differently structured brains to the other 98 percent.
The brain areas that make supertaskers__38__from the rest of the population are the same parts that are most different between__39__and nonhuman primates, according to David Strayer, director of the applied cognition lab at the University of Utah.Scientists are__40__of the reason why some brains are different.

The__43__appears to be caused by a logjam of nerve messages.Faced with two almost simultaneous tasks less than 300 milliseconds apart, the brain’s ability to deal with the second one slows down.The__44__response to the second task was postponed until the response to the first was completed. This means that with e-mails,phone calls, text messages and online social media all competing for our__45__,often against a background of television, radio or music, our brains can__46__information overload.
Scientists made the discovery after scanning the brains of__47__attempting to multitask on a computer. The task was deliberately designed to involve the use of different senses and motor responses.

Thomas Edison was one of ten said to be the greatest genius of his age. There are only a few men in all of the history, who have changed the lives of other men as much as the inventor of the first useful electric light. But Edison could never be happy only because someone said he was a genius.“There is no such thing as genius,” Edison said.He said that what people called genius was mostly hard-working.
But Edison was a dreamer as well as a worker. From his earliest days as a child he wondered about the secrets of nature.Nature,he often said,is full of secrets. He tried to understand them; then,he tried to learn what could usefully be done with them.
Edison enjoyed thinking. He knew that most people will do almost anything instead of the difficult work of thinking, especially if they do not think very often. But he knew, too, that thinking can give men enjoyment and pleasure.
Edison could not understand how anyone could be uninterested in life.As he loved to think,he also loved to work.On the day he became 75 years old, someone asked him what ideas he had about life.“Work,” he answered.“Discovering the secrets of nature and using them to make men happier.” He said he had enough inventions in his mind to give him another 100 years of work.

It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned.Fortunately, such moments are usually not obvious to the listeners. Why? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say. They hear only what the speaker does say.If you lose your place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no_one_will_be_any_the_wiser.When such moments occur, don’t worry about them.Just continue as if nothing happened.
Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that doesn’t really matter. If you have ever listened to Martin Luther King’s famous speech—“I Have a Dream”, you may notice that he stumbled (结巴) over his words twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you don’t remember. Why?Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making.
People care a lot about making a mistake in a speech because they regard speech-making as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication. They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performance. They are looking for a well-thought-out speech that expresses the speaker’s ideas clearly and directly.Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speaker’s attractiveness by making him more human.
As you work on your speech, don’t worry about being perfect.Once you free your mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.
60.The underlined part in the first paragraph means that no one will ________.
A.be smarter than you
B.notice your mistakes
C.do better than you
D.know what you are talking about
61.You don’t remember obvious mistakes in a speech because ________.
A.your attention is on the content
B.you don’t fully understand the speech
C.you don’t know what the speaker plans to say
D.you find the way of speech-making more important
62.It can be inferred from the passage that________.
A.giving a speech is like giving a performance
B.one or two mistakes in a speech may not be bad
C.listeners should pay more attention to how a speech is made
D.the more mistakes a speaker makes, the more attractive he will be
63.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.How to Be a Perfect Speaker
B.How to Make a Perfect Speech
C.Don’t Expect a Perfect Speech
D.Don’t Expect Mistakes in a Speech

I will always remember my mother’s last few days in this world.
On February 14th, 2000, my class went on a field trip to the beach. I had so much fun. When we returned to school, my teacher told me to go to the headmaster’s office. When I entered the office, I saw a police officer. Suddenly I realized something was wrong. The police officer told me what had happened and we went to pick my sister up. After that, we went to the hospital and waited. Time went slowly. Finally, we got to see our mother. It was terrible.
On the next day, the headmaster came and told my two teachers what had happened. I was taking a rest that day. I knew it had something to do with my mother. I kept thinking that she either died or had gotten better. How I wished that she had gotten better. When my teacher took me outside, my sister ran up to me. She started crying, “She’s gone. Teresa, mommy’s gone. She’s dead.” I couldn’t believe it. We jumped into the car and drove straight to the hospital. Most of my families were there. The silence was terrible. I knew I had to say goodbye.
Today when I look back, I still miss my mother very much, but I know that I will live. My mother was a strong mother, who had the biggest heart in my eyes. My mother was an angel walking on the earth. I will always remember her as living. When someone is asked who their hero is, they usually say someone famous, like Michael Jordan or Britney Spears. When someone asks me who my hero is, I tell them, my mother. My mother lives every day. That is what makes her a true hero.

As can be seen in the picture,a tree is broken by the strong wind, while the grass still stays as it is.Weak and small as the grass is,it can stand the strong wind.
It is the same with human beings. Some people look very strong, but they are easily defeated by difficulties.Weak as some people may seem, they are actually strong in mind, just like the grass in the picture. This kind of people can adapt easily to changing situations and achieve more. They are ready to face challenges and never give up in time of difficulty. So a person’s inner strength is much more powerful than physical strength.

Dear_Mr.Principal,
I_am_a_senior_student_of_our_school.I’d_like_to_say_something_about_the_canteen_service_in_our_schoo1.
In general, the service is satisfactory. The hall is clean and tidy. The dishes look inviting and taste delicious as well. What’s more, the workers there treat us as their friends, which makes us feel very happy.
However,we feel the price of the meals is a little too high.Besides,we can only have a limited variety of dishes with little change every week.In addition,we often have to stand in line for a long time before we can get the meal. You could understand how precious time is to us students. Therefore, may I suggest something be done to solve the problems so that we can all enjoy our meals at school?
