I am a strong believer that if a child is raised with approval,he learns to love himself and will be successful in his own way.
Several weeks ago,I was doing homework with my son in the third grade and he kept standing up from his chair to go over the math lines.I kept asking him to sit down, telling him that he would concentrate better. He sat but seconds later,as if he didn’t even notice he was doing it,he got up again.I was getting frustrated, but then it hit me.I started noticing his answers were much quicker and accurate when he stood up.Could he be more intent while standing up?
This made me start questioning myself and what I had been raised to believe.I was raised to believe that a quiet, calm child was a sure way to success. This child would have the discipline to study hard, get good grades and become someone important in life.
Now those same people perhaps come to realize that their kids are born with their own sets of DNA and personality traits, and all you can do is loving and accepting them.As parents, throughout their growing years and beyond that,we need to be our kids’ best cheerleaders, guiding them and helping them find their way.
I have stopped asking my son to sit down and concentrate.Obviously,he is concentrating just in his own way and not mine.We need to learn to accept our kids’ ways of doing things. Some way may have worked for me but doesn’t mean we need to carry it through generations. There is nothing sweeter than being individual and unique. It makes us free and happy and that’s just the way I want my kids to live their own life.
1.At the beginning, the author tried to keep his son seated in order to make him________.

A.the importance of parents
B.the old form of education
C.the relationship between kids and their parents
D.the good grades of some kids
3.The author has stopped asking his son to sit down because________.
A.he has changed his traditional ideas
B.his son wants to be unique
C.his son doesn’t follow his advice
D.his son’s DNA is different
4.Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?
A.Study hard and you’ll be successful
B.Be friendly to your children
C.Children’s success in their own style
D.Parents’ help with their children’s study

The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896.There were nine sports:cycling, tennis, gymnastics, swimming, track and field, weightlifting, rowing, wrestling and shooting.Sailing was also to have taken place, but had to be cancelled because of bad weather at sea.
In the first Olympics there were no real team sports. Then, slowly,a few team sports joined the program.Football and hockey were the first team sports introduced into the Olympics in London in 1908.Then in 1936,at the Berlin Olympics, the Germans brought in handball and the Americans had basketball accepted as an Olympic sport.
It often happens that the country that introduces a new sport into the Olympics then goes on to win the gold medals. In 1904,at the Olympics in St.Louis, the Americans introduced boxing and won all seven events.Five horse riding events were introduced into the 1912 Stockholm(斯德哥尔摩) Olympics, and Swedish riders won four of them. And in 1964,at the Tokyo Olympics, two sports which are very popular in Japan were introduced:judo and volleyball. The Japanese won all three gold medals in the judo, and also won the first women’s volleyball competition. Some new sports have recently been added to the Olympics. In Los Angeles,in 1984,baseball was introduced and became an Olympics sport. In Seoul(汉城),Korea in 1988,table tennis was introduced for the first time, and tennis returned as an Olympics sport.Unlike tennis, some sports, such as golf and rugby(橄榄球),have been tried in the Olympics but have never returned.

The best way to come first is to go last.An analysis of almost 50 years of competitions—including Eurovision Song Contests and world skating championships—has found that contestants are more likely to win if they are among the last to appear before the judges.
The study by an American university appears to provide scientific proof that the best man, or woman, does not always win.
It found that, on average, the last competitor to appear in the Eurovision Song Contest was more than twice as likely to win as the one who went on first.
The first rounds of figure-skating championships, for which the running order is selected at random, showed more dramatic results. The final skater had a 14 percent chance of victory, making him or her more than four times as likely to win as the first skater.
The study showed a gradual worsening of chances for competitors who appeared earlier in the running order.A contestant who appears first in a contest is two percent less likely to win than one who appears second.A contestant who appears second is two percent less likely to win than one who appears third, and so on.
The findings are published in the March issue of Acta Psychologica, a scientific journal.
Robert Hardman, a senior lecturer in psychology at London Metropolitan University who specializes in the science of decision-making, said that the results were interesting. He suggested that the effect was caused by the limitations of the human memory.
“When people make comparisons, they aren’t really able to make a lot of fine-grade discrimination. When contestants appear at the beginning of a contest, judges have little to compare them to and are perhaps wary(谨慎的) of the scores they give,” he said.
“Later on, when judges are able to compare the contestants to those that have gone before, they might give more extreme marks because they feel more confident about their judgments.”
5.Robert Hardman’s words mainly tell about his ______.
A.own achievement in the research
B.explanation for the findings
C.suggestion to solve the problem
D.comments on the findings
6.The first skater in the first round of figure skating championships had a ________percent chance of winning.

A.fails to show his/her very best
B.is mistakenly put in the running order
C.meets with unfair judges
D.appears too early before the judges

In today’s Ireland,it seems hard to imagine the grim days of the 19th century when so many of the population starved,or that,in those days, many poor people had no clue how to prepare any food other than boil a potato.Nowadays,it is quite possible to eat both well and heartily all over the island.
Tourism has made a vast difference to the standards of cooking in Ireland.Until recently, there was hardly any tradition of eating out in many districts, except perhaps on very few occasions at a local hotel.Patterns of diet were old-styled,based firmly on ‘meat and two vegetables’ (somewhat overcooked),potatoes (of course) and large quantities of dairy produce. Now things are very different.Tourist demands for predictable, inexpensive fast-food are met,as everywhere, with hamburgers and pizzas—a better bet being fish and chips. But more sophisticated tastes have introduced whole foods and vegetarian restaurants (almost unheard of before),and a vast number of new restaurants, often French in style, have opened in the main tourist centers.Food “events” such as Kinsale’s Gourmet Festival or Galway’s Oyster Festival attract large numbers of visitors and reflect the new interest in food.
Whatever Irish cooking lacks in finesse(精细),it nearly always makes up for in plenty, and ingredients(成分) are of a high quality.Home-grown produce includes rich dairy foods, beef, lamb and pork, and a great variety of seafood. One of its great specialties is soda bread. It is made with buttermilk and is served fresh and warm with every meal.Recently there has been a return to simple Irish foods such as stews(炖菜) and potato dishes.
One of the best-value meals in Ireland is breakfast.A “traditional Irish breakfast” is a plateful of bacon and eggs with soda and potato breads.Accommodation rates are nearly always quoted with a full breakfast included,so you might as well eat enough to keep you going all day and get your money’s worth!
1.What was Irish food like until quite recently?
A.It was very conservative and uninteresting.
B.It was influenced by French cooking.
C.It was very unhealthy.
D.It was plentiful.
2.How has Irish food improved in recent years?
A.There are more French restaurants.
B.Food produce is fresher.
C.There are more kinds.
D.Food is more expensive.
3.What is the main reason for this improvement?
A.People have more money to spend.
B.The development of tourism.
C.People have more tastes today.
D.Young people dislike traditional food.
4.How does the passage describe Irish cooking today?
A.It is exciting and interesting.
B.It is boring and overcooked.
C.It is plentiful and simple.
D.It is good-looking and tastes bad.

New York State
The Dutch(丹麦) West India Company built the first settlement
near present day Albany in 1624 and another on the site of present day
Manhattan a year later. After the English took over in the 1660s,it was
renamed New York, after the Duke of York.
From the 1850s through the early 1900s,thousands of people arrived in the United States and lived in New York City. They first came from Ireland and Germany and later from Italy,Eastern Europe, and China, among other places. When these people arrived, they often lived on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, where rents for the crowded apartment buildings were low.At that time, each apartment had only three rooms:a living room,a kitchen, and a small bedroom.Often seven or more people lived in each apartment. Not only was it crowded, but also, until 1905,there were no bathrooms inside the building.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, most American students attended a one-room schoolhouse.A single teacher would have students in the first through eighth grades, and she taught them all.The number of students varied from six to 40 or more. The teacher usually taught reading, writing, history, and geography.
The classroom of a one-room schoolhouse probably looked much like your own.The teacher’s desk may have been in the front, however, there would have been a wood-burning stove since there was no other source of heat.
However, today New York has the third largest population (after California and Texas),and remains the financial center of the country. One of the original 13 states to join the Union (it entered in 1788),New York is known as the “Empire State.”

B.has as many students as other teachers
C.should be rich in every field of the subjects
D.could teach lessons easily and comfortably

Scientists say they now have proof to support the old-fashioned advice that it’s best to_sleep_on_a_problem.They say sleep strengthens the memory and helps the brain organize the masses of information we receive each day.
The lead researcher Bob Stickgold at Harvard Medical School said,“Sleep helps us draw rules from our experiences. It’s like knowing the difference between dogs and cats even if it’s hard to explain.”
The US research team studied how well students remembered connections between words and symbols, reports New Scientist. They compared how the students performed if they had had sleep between seeing the words and having the test, and if they had not slept. They found that people were better able to remember lists of related words after a night’s sleep than after the same time spent awake during the day. They also found it easier to remember themes that the words had in common. But they forgot around one in four more themes if they had been awake.
Prof.John Groeger,University of Surrey’s Sleep Research Centre, said,“People have been trying for years to find out what the purpose of sleep is,as we know that only certain parts of it have a restorative(促使康复的) value.”
“We form and store huge numbers of experiences in the head every day,and sleep seems to be the way the brain deals with them all.”
5.The phrase “to sleep on a problem” in Paragraph 1 most likely means “________”.
A.to pay full attention to a problem
B.to wait until the next day for a decision
C.to sleep to forget a problem
D.to have difficulty in sleeping
6.In the study by the US research team, students were asked to________.
A.put together words of similar meanings
B.remember words and their meanings
C.show their knowledge of words
D.make up lists of related words
7.Which of the following may be easier to remember?
A.Themes learned right before the test.
B.Rules from personal experiences.
C.Words learned before a good sleep.
D.Ideas stored together in the brain.
8.What may be the importance of the research?
A.It shows that sleep may help us manage information.
B.It helps find out the common themes of words.
C.It tells us that more sleep can improve health.
D.It proves the value of old-fashioned advice.

I am wearing a small red ribbon this morning to remind myself and others around me that today is World AIDS Day.
The red ribbon,an international symbol of AIDS awareness,is gaining increasing public recognition as more Chinese, from top leaders to movie stars, wear it today.
Gone were the days when the topic of HIV/AIDS was a public and media taboo(禁忌).Over the past few years,we have watched, read and heard many stories from doctors, volunteers and public health officials at the forefront of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment.
Quite a few people with HIV/AIDS have come forward to share their experiences on TV or in the media.
The local and central governments have become more forthcoming (be helpful) with their new prevention and treatment programs, and financial input. The latter rose from less than 1 million Yuan (US$ 121,000) in 1986 to a pledge of 800 million Yuan (US$98.8 million) in the year of 2006.
The change from silence to public and media campaigns with official promises has been remarkable, especially since China battled through the SARS crisis.
But have we got a full understanding on HIV/AIDS? What do we know about the extent of HIV/AIDS in China?
The figures, ranging from confirmed cases to estimates, remain debated. After all,no more than a year has passed since the policy of free medical tests was making public.Unknown numbers from the high-risk groups’ drug addicts and people working in sex-related place as well as farmers who once sold blood could still be reluctant to come forward.

The reporter turned to the third man, “Do you think so?”
“No, I don’t,” he said. “I don’t think that makes the visitor important. That makes the President important.”

As we can see from the picture,it is raining hard, and there, under the broken umbrella, stands a man holding a small but good umbrella in his hand.
In my opinion, the picture tries to tell us that it’s not the size but the quality that we should focus on.When it is raining cats and dogs, the large one cannot prevent you from being showered,or it doesn’t work or fun_ction as it should, because it is broken or of poor quality, while the other one, small as it is,can protect you from the rain.
In our daily life, sometimes we pay too much attention to the size or appearance. In fact, what we should concentrate on is the quality.Only in this way can we benefit from what we have.
