Copernicus was born in Torun,Poland,on February 19,1473.Little is known about his early life except that his father died when he was 10.An uncle adopted him,his two sisters, and his brother. The uncle saw to it that the two boys received a good education.Copernicus went to the University of Cracow. There he studied such subjects as Latin, mathematics, and astronomy. It was probably at that time that he changed his Polish name,Niklas Koppernigk,to the Latin form of Nicolaus Copernicus. In 1496 Copernicus went to Italy, where he spent the next 10 years studying at various universities.
In Copernicus’ time people still believed that all things—the sun,the stars, and the planets—moved around the earth. It was an old belief that few men had ever questioned.Aristotle had based his theory of astronomy on this belief.Because the Church had long been the center of learning, the theory was also linked to religious beliefs.
In 1506 Copernicus returned to his homeland.A few years later he began to work for the Church. All those years Copernicus carried on his work in astronomy. He had just the most basic equipment and, like other scientists of his day, made observations with only his eyes.Still, using mathematics and logic(逻辑),Copernicus worked out a different theory, which held that the planets went around the sun.
Copernicus did not announce his ideas. He did not want to make trouble. But he could not hide the scientific truth. So he talked about his theory with his friends, who strongly advised him to have his work published. His great book,On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Bodies, appeared at the very end of his life.Copernicus saw the first copy on the day he died,May 24,1543.

Every culture has a recognized point when a child becomes an adult, when rules must be followed and tests passed.
In China, although teenagers can get their ID cards at 16,many only see themselves as an adult when they are 18.In the US,where everyone drives, the main step to the freedom of adult life is learning to drive. At 16,American teens take their driving test. When they have their license, they drive into the grown-up world.
“Nobody wants to ride the cheese bus to school,” said Ele anor Fulham,17.She brought the pressure back to memory, especially for kids from wealthier families.“It’s like you’re not cool if you don’t have a car,” she said.
According to recent research,41% of 16 to 19-year-olds in the US own cars,up from 23% in 1985.Although,most of these cars are bought by parents, some teens get part-time jobs to help pay.
Not all families can afford cars for their children. In cities with subways and limited parking, some teenagers don’t want them. But in rich suburban areas without subways, and where bicycles are more for fun than transportation,it is strange for a teenager not to have a car.
But police say 16-year-olds have almost three times more accidents than 18 to 19-year-olds.This has made many parents pause before letting their kids drive.
Julie Sussman,of Virginia, decided that her son Chad,15,will wait until he is 17 to apply for his learner’s permit.
Chad said he has accepted his parents’ decision, although it has caused some teasing from his friends.“They say that I am unlucky,” he said,“But I’d rather be alive than driving, and I don’t really trust my friends on the road, either.”
In China as more families get cars, more 18-year-olds learn to drive. Will this become a big step to becoming an adult?
5.Which may serve as the BEST title of the article?
A.Cars Helping You to Grown-Up
B.Driving into the Grown-Up World

6.16-year-old drivers have more accidents possibly because ________.
A.they want to show themselves off
B.they are never experienced drivers
C.older people always drive better
D.they never drive carefully on the road
7.When Chad said “I don’t really trust my friends...”,he meant that ________.
A.he might run into his friends if he drove
B.he didn’t agree with his friends
C.he might not be safe if his friends drove
D.he was afraid that his friends might well lie to him
8.The passage mainly gives information about ________.
A.an American culture
B.a cultural difference between America and China
C.a change in the Chinese culture
D.the relationship between driving and a person’s development

Edmund Halley was an English scientist who lived over 200 years ago.He studied the observations of comets(彗星) which other scientists had made. The orbit of one particular comet was a very difficult mathematical problem. He could not figure it out.Neither could other scientists who dealt with such problems.
However,Halley had a friend named Isaac Newton, who was a brilliant mathematician.Newton thought he had already worked out that problem, but he could not find the papers on which he had done it.He told Halley that the orbit of a comet had the shape of an ellipse(椭圆形).
Now Halley set to work.He figured out the orbits of some of the comets that had been observed by scientists. He made a surprising discovery. The comets that had appeared in the years 1531,1607,and 1682 all had the same orbit.Yet their appearance had been 75 to 76 years apart.
This seemed very strange to Halley.Three different comets followed the same orbit. The more Halley thought about it,the more he thought that there had not been three different comets as people thought. He decided that they had simply seen the same comet three times. The comet had gone away and had come back again.
It was an astonishing idea! Halley felt certain enough to make a prediction(预言) of what would happen in the future. He decided that this would appear in the year 1758.There were 53 years to go before Halley’s prediction could be tested. In 1758 the comet appeared in the sky.Halley did not see it,for he had died some years before.Ever since then that comet had been called Halley’s comet,in his honor.

If there is one thing I’m sure about,it is that in a hundred
years from now we will still be reading newspapers. It is not that
newspapers are a necessity.Even now some people get most of
their news from television or radio. Many buy a paper only on
Saturday or Sunday. But for most people reading a newspaper has become a habit passed down from generation to generation.
The nature of what is news may change. What basically makes news is what affects our lives—the big political stories, the coverage of the wars, earthquakes and other disasters, will continue much the same.I think there will be more coverage of scientific research, though. It’s already happening in areas that many directly affect our lives, like genetic(基因) engineering. In the future,I think there will be more coverage of scientific explanations of why we feel as we do—as we develop a better understanding of how the brain operates and what our feelings really are.
It’s quite possible that in the next century newspapers will be transmitted(传送) electronically from Fleet Street and printed out in our own home.In fact,I’m pretty sure that how it will happen in the future. You will probably be able to choose from a menu, making up your own newspapers by picking out the things you want to read—sports and international news, etc.
I think people have got it wrong when they talk about competition between the different media(媒体).They actually feed_off each other. Some people once foresaw that television would kill off newspapers, but that hasn’t happened. What it read on the printed page lasts longer than pictures on a screen or sound lost in the air.And as for the Internet,it’s never really pleasant to read something just on a screen.
1.What is the best title for the passage?
A.The best way to get news
B.The changes of media
C.Make your own newspaper
D.The future of newspaper
2.What will probably be in the newspaper made by yourself?
A.Sports and international news.
B.A menu of important news.
C.The most important news.
D.What you are interested in.
3.From the passage,we can infer ________.
A.newspapers will win the competition among the different media
B.newspapers will stay with us together with other media
C.television will take the place of newspapers
D.the writer believes some media will die out
4.The underlined phrase “feed off” in the last paragraph means ________.
A.depend on B.compete with
C.fight with D.kill off

Talking plants might sound like characters in a fairy tale. But recent scientific studies have shown that plants communicate with each other and with other living things in a surprising number of ways.To understand them, scientists say,we just have to learn their language.Farmers are especially interested in what plants have to say.
“Plants are able to communicate with all sorts of organisms(有机体).They can communicate with giant bacteria, with other plants and with insects. They do this chemically,”said Cahill,an Ecology Professor of the University of Alberta in Canada.
Plant scientists are just beginning to understand this chemical “language”.Cahill says studies have shown, for example, that plants can evaluate conditions in their immediate environment and take appropriate actions.Plants have an ability, for example,to signal pain or discomfort caused by anything from temperature extremes to an insect attack.Jack Schultz,a professor of chemical ecology at the University of Missouri, says when a plant senses that it’s being eaten,it cannot walk away from trouble;on the contrary,it will release a chemical vapor that alerts other plants nearby.
“Their language is a chemical language, and it involves chemicals that move through the air that are easy to be changeable, and most of all are smells that we are familiar with,”Schultz explained.
“All plants responded to the attack by changing their chemistry to defend themselves,”Schultz recalled.“But we were quite surprised to find that nearby plants also changed their chemistry to defend themselves, even though they were not part of the experiment.”
Studies have also shown that plants under attack release pleasant chemicals. Those chemicals attract friendly insects that attack the pests eating the plant.
In the end, plants’ability to communicate their needs—and our ability to understand them—could help farmers reduce the use of poisonous chemicals, cut operating costs and limit damage to the environment.
5.The recent scientific studies have shown that plants can________.
A.communicate with other living things in a chemical way
B.hardly react to any sudden change in temperature
C.use a very special chemical language which is familiar to us
D.respond to the attack by giving off poisonous chemicals

Sometimes it’s like that with people. When we look at a person,we usually only see “the outside clay shell”.It isn’t always beautiful or shining,so we __19__ the person;we see him as less important than someone more beautiful or more stylish. But we haven’t taken the time to look for the treasure inside that person. If we spend the time getting to know that person, the clay will come off and the brilliant jewel will shine. We are __20__ made, not only with our physical bodies, but also with our spiritual selves, which are sometimes hidden from others by the “earthen shell”.

请阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
For centuries, the body’s blood has been linked closely with the emotions.People who show no human emotions or feelings, are said to be cold-blooded killer. For example, the police are searching for a cold-blooded killer. He seems to kill for no reason, and no emotion,as if taking someone’s life as nothing.
Cold can affect other parts of the body. The expression “get cold feet” has nothing to do with cold or your feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you have decided to do.For example, you agree to be president of an organization. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned, and all the work of the organizations will be your responsibility. You are likely to get cold feet about being president when you understand the situation.
The expression “give someone the cold shoulder” probably comes from the physical act of turning your back toward someone, instead of speaking to him face to face. You may give a cold shoulder to a friend who has not kept a promise he made to you.Or,to someone who has lied about you to others.
A cold fish is not a fish.It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and shows no love or warmth.A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone.Someone who is a cold fish could be cold-hearted.Now a cold-hearted person is someone who has no sympathy.Several popular songs in recent years were about cold-hearted men or cold-hearted women who, without feelings, broke the hearts of their lovers.
“Out in the cold” means not getting something that everybody else got.A person might say that everybody but him got a pay raise—he was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be.
56.When you refuse to speak to a man and treat him in a distant way,you may express by “________”.
A.I give him the cold shoulder
B.I think he is a cold-blooded man
C.I think he is a cold fish
D.I’m likely to get cold feet
57.If Sue shows absolutely no reaction to those awful pictures of starving children in Africa, you will say ________.
A.she is a cold-blooded killer
B.she gets cold feet
C.she is a cold fish
D.she is out in the cold
58.We can use the expression “________” to describe a man who abandons or hurts his lover without mercy.
A.cold-blooded B.cold shoulder
C.cold feet D.cold-hearted
59.The topic of this passage is about ________.
A.the relationship between cold and our body
B.some expressions about friendship
C.some expressions connected with cold
D.how cold weather comes into being
B
From a very early age, some children exhibit better self-control than others. Now,a new study that began with about 1,000 children in New Zealand has tracked how a child’s low self-control can predict poor health, money troubles and even a criminal record in their adult years.
Researchers have been studying this group of children for decades now. They observed the level of self-control the youngsters displayed.Parents, teachers, even the kids themselves, scored the youngsters on measures like “acting before thinking” and “Persistence in reaching goals.”
The study led by Moffitt of Duke University and colleagues followed 1,000 children from birth to age 32 in Dunedin,New Zealand.
“The children who had the lowest self-control when they were age three to ten, later on had the most health problems in their 30s,” Moffitt said,“and they had the worst financial situation. They were more likely to have a criminal record and to be raising a child as a single parent on a very low income.” Moffitt explained that self-control problems were widely observed, and weren’t just a feature of a small group of misbehaving kids.
Moffitt said it’s still unclear why some children have better self-control than others, though she said other researchers have found that it’s mostly a learned-behavior,with relatively little genetic influence. But good self-control can be set to run in families because children with good self-control are more likely to grow up to be healthy and prosperous parents. But the good news,Moffitt said,is that self-control can be taught by parents, and through school curricula that have been shown to be effective.
60.From the first two paragraphs we learn that ________.

My house is made out of wood, glass and stone. It is also made out of software.
If you come to visit, you’ll probably be surprised when you come in.Someone will give you an electronic PIN(个人身份号码) to wear. This PIN tells the house who and where you are.The house uses this information to give you what you need. When it’s dark outside, the PIN turns on the lights nearest to you,and then turns them off as you walk away from them.Music moves with you too.If the house knows your favorite music,it plays it.The music seems to be everywhere, but in fact other people in the house hear different music or no music. If you get a telephone call, only the nearest telephone rings.
Of course, you are also able to tell the house if you want something. There is a home control console(控制台),a small machine that turns things on and off around you.
The PIN and the console are new ideas, but they are in fact like many things we have today. If you want to go to a movie, you need a ticket. If I give you my car keys, you can use my car.The car works for you because you have the keys.My house works for you because you wear the PIN or hold the console.
I believe that ten years from now, most new homes will have the systems that I’ve put in my house. The systems will probably be even bigger and better than the ones I’ve put in today.
I like to try new ideas.I know that some of my ideas will work better than others. But I hope that one day I will stop thinking of these systems as new,and ask myself instead,“How will I live without them?”
64.What does the passage mainly discuss?
A.How to develop a new system.

C.A home for the future.
D.Easy life in the future.

A.it has been controlled by computers
B.you can make a telephone call anywhere
C.it has your favorite music following you
D.the writer is able to change his new idea into practice

“Our aim is to take our art to the world and make people understand what it is to move,” said David Belle, the founder of parkour (跑酷).
Do you love running? It is a good exercise, yet many people find it boring. But what if making your morning jog a creative one? Like jumping from Walls and over gaps, and ground rolls? Just like the James Bond in the movie Casino Royaler,Bond jumps down from a roof to a windowsill and then runs several blocks over obstacles on the way.It is just because of Bond’s wonderful performances that the sport has become popular worldwide.
Yes,that’s parkour,an extreme street sport aimed at moving from one point to another as quickly as possible, getting over all the obstacles in the path using only the abilities of the human body.Parkour is considered an extreme sport. As its participants dash around a city, they may jump over fences, run up walls and even move from rooftop to rooftop.
Parkour can be just as exciting and charming as it sounds, but its participants see parkour much more than that.
Overcoming all the obstacles on the course and in life is part of the philosophy (理念) behind parkour. This is the same as life. You must determine your destination,go straight, jump over all the barriers as if in parkour and never fall back from them in your life,to reach the destination successfully.A parkour lover said,“I love parkour because its philosophy has become my life,my way to do everything.”
Another philosophy we’ve learnt from parkour is freedom. It can be done by anyone,at any time, anywhere in the world. It is a kind of expression of trust in yourself that you earn energy and confidence.

Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers urged,“Be enthusiastic!Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience.”
How right they were!Enthusiastic people can turn a boring drive into an adventure, extra work into opportunity and strangers into friends.
“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm,”wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is the paste that helps you hang in there when the going gets tough. It is the inner voice that whispers,“I can do it!” when others shout,“No,you can’t.”
It took years and years for the early work of Barbara McClintock,a geneticist (遗传学家) who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine,to be generally accepted.Yet she didn’t let_up on her experiments.Work was such a deep pleasure for her that she never thought of stopping.
Author and poet Samuel Ullman once wrote,“Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.”
Enthusiastic people also love what they do,regardless of money or title or power. If we cannot do what we love as a full-time career,we can treat it as a part-time interest, like the head of state who paints, the nun (修女) who runs marathons, the official who handcrafts (手工制作) furniture.
We can’t afford to waste tears on “might-have-beens”.We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after “what-can-bes”.
We need to live each moment wholeheartedly, with all our senses—finding pleasure in the fragrance of a backyard garden, the crayoned (蜡笔的) picture of a six-year-old,the enchanting beauty of a rainbow. It is such enthusiastic love of life that puts a sparkle in our eyes,a lilt in our steps and smoothes the wrinkles from our souls.
72.What can be the best title of this passage?
A.Find Pleasure in What You Are Doing
B.Wake up Your Life
C.To Give up Enthusiasm Wrinkles the Soul
D.No Pains,No Gains
73.What conclusion does the writer draw through the experience of finding a job?
A.Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience.
B.Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.
C.We can’t afford to waste tears on “might-have-beens”.
D.Enthusiastic people can turn a boring drive into an adventure, extra work into opportunity and strangers into friends.
74.Which of the following statements is WRONG according to the passage?
A.No one can achieve great success without enthusiasm.
B.Enthusiasm will take a person further than any amount of his experience.
C.We should make great effort to do the things that can be done instead of regretting for the past.
D.Barbara McClintock was generally accepted many years before she won the Nobel Prize.
75.Which of the following can replace the underlined phrase “let up”?
A.continue B.make less effort
C.make great effort D.stop

This pie chart indicates that the majority of women in the four big cities would not give up their jobs even if they had enough money to stay at home.In response to the question, only 32.2 percent of the women say that they would while 60.8 percent say that they would not.
The reason why some women would choose to stop working is quite obvious. They work just because they need the money for the necessities of life.Once they can afford the expenses, they prefer to quit. Some of them may also hold the traditional belief that a woman’s place is in her home.
However, most of the women think of otherwise. They would choose to continue working even if they did not have to.It seems to suggest that many women want to be financially independent. It may also suggest that many of them view their jobs not only as a source of income but also as a platform for socialization and self-fulfillment.

Last week,we all felt sorry to hear that our teacher was ill.Afterwards,we had a discussion and decided to manage on our own.
During the following days, all of us did a good job.None of us was late for school and we did morning exercise better than before. In class,we listened to the teacher attentively.Besides,we won the school basketball match. The day before our teacher came back,we gave the classroom a thorough cleaning to welcome her.Our monitor presented a bunch of flowers to her when she stepped onto the platform.Seeing the red flag for Weekly Model Class, she was happy and moved.
We were greatly inspired too, because we succeeded in managing on our own, which proves we have grown up.
