Nobel, who was born in Stockholm, is a great scientist famous for his
dangerous experiments.
Nobel studied in the USA and then Russia between 1850 and 1859.
After his return, he started researching into bombs. As is known, bomb is dangerous to life, but Nobel was working under that condition.Once a big explosion in his lab completely destroyed the lab and caused some deaths. After that he had to experiment on a boat in a lake.He received criticism and satire(讽刺), but he proceeded with the work rather than losing heart. From 1860s to 1880s, Nobel made many achievements and his inventions were first used in building roads and digging tunnels. Most of the bombs were safer and more possible to be controlled.Even at the end of the 20th century, we still used his methods.
Nobel had many patents in Britain and other European countries. He was quick to see industrial openings(机会) for his scientific inventions and built up over 80 companies in 20 different countries.Indeed his greatness lay in his outstanding ability to combine the qualities of an original scientist with those of a forward-looking industrialist.
But Nobel’s main concern was never with making money or even with making scientific discoveries.Seldom happy, he was always searching for a meaning to life, and from his youth, he had taken a serious interest in literature and philosophy. His greatest wish, however, was to see an end to wars, and thus peace between nations, and he spent much time and money working for this cause. To follow his will, a fund was set up to encourage people to make great progress in physics, chemistry, physiology(生理学), medicine, literature and peace. That’s the Nobel Prize which means great honor to a scientist.

Albert Einstein had a great effect on science and history, and his
achievement was even greater than only a few other great scientists
have achieved. An American university president once said that Einstein
had made a new outlook, a new view of the universe. It may be some
time before the average mind understands fully the identity of time and space and so on—but even ordinary men now understand that the universe is something larger than ever thought before.
By 1914 young Einstein had been world-famous.He accepted the offer to become a professor at the Prussian Academy of Science in Berlin. He had few duties, little teaching and unlimited chances for study, but soon his peace and quietness were broken by World War Ⅰ.
Einstein hated fighting and killing. The great suffering of war affected him deeply, and he sat unhappily in his office doing little. He lost interest in his research.Only when peace came in 1918 was he able to get back to work.
In the year following World War Ⅰ,honors were increasingly put on him.He became head of the Kaiser Whihem Institute of Theoretical Physics. But he himself refused the effort to put him in a position far above other people. He was well known for his humble(谦逊的) manner. He often said that his success would certainly have been achieved by others if he had never lived.
In 1921 he won the Nobel Prize, and he was honoured in Germany until the rise of Nazism(纳粹) when he was driven from Germany because he was a Jew.

Find a quiet location.Keep a routine.Focus on one subject at a
time.It all seems like sound advice for students who need to hit the
books, but recent studies indicate the conventional wisdom is all
wrong.
Here’s a list of tips from Carey,a scientist, for getting the most out of your study time:
Test yourself:Doing practice quizzes can help you retrieve information on test day.“Tests have a very bad reputation as a measurement tool,”Carey says. But psychologists have found self-tests slow down the forgetting of material you’ve studied.“If you study something once, and then you test yourself on it,”Carey says,“you do better than if you study it two times over.”
Move around:Changing up where you study can help you retain more information.“If you move around and study the same material in several places,” he says,“you may be forming...multiple associations for the same material, the same words and so on.So it’s better anchored in your brain, and you can pull it out easier.”
Mix it up:Think about a football player who does strength training, speed training and drills.Carey says
alternating between different facets of a subject in a single sitting can “leave a deeper impression on the brain”.For example, when studying French,do some verbs, some speaking and some reading.Spending your time in deep concentration on just verbs, say, isn’t as effective.
Space it out:Information learned in a hurry is lost just as fast.Carey likens cramming your brain to speed-packing a cheap suitcase—it all falls out.So if you really want to learn, space out shorter,hour-long study sessions.“There’s no doubt you can cram your way through an exam,” Carey says. The problem is that it’s so easy to forget what you just crammed—and once it’s gone,Carey says,“It’s gone. You’re not getting it back.”
Of course, nothing can replace the power of motivation and discipline. But Carey says the overall message is encouraging:“Studying can sort of be incorporated into a more varied life, much more easily than we thought.”
1.According to the text, the best way to learn is ________.
A.to learn one’s subject at a time in a quiet place
B.to be strongly motivated to learn something
C.to mix up everything that you will learn
D.to do self-tests after you learn immediately
2.Why are you advised to move around while learning?
A.Because it can make your brain focused on learning.
B.Because you can save time by missing the same words.
C.Because you can link materials with different things.
D.Because it keeps your brain in a completely resting state.
3.How did the writer develop the fifth paragraph?
A.By telling an interesting story.
B.By presenting in the time order.
C.By analyzing cause and effect.
D.By making a comparison.
4.Why did the author write the passage?
A.To present some new advice on learning.
B.To introduce some traditional wisdom.
C.To explain some phenomena of studying.
D.To list some views on reading books.

Sometimes people add to what they say even when they don’t talk.
Gestures are the “silent language” of every culture. We point a finger
or move another part of the body to show what we want to say.It is
important to know the body language of every country or we may be misunderstood.
In the United States, people greet each other with a handshake in a formal introduction. The handshake must be firm.If the handshake is weak,it is a sign of weakness or unfriendliness.Friends may place a hand on the other’s arm or shoulder. Some people, usually women, greet a friend with a hug.
Space is important to Americans. When two people talk to each other, they usually stand about two and a half feet away and at an angle,so they are not facing each other directly.Americans get uncomfortable when a person stands too close. They will move back to have their space. If Americans touch another person by accident, they say,“Pardon me.”or “Excuse me.”
Americans like to look at the other person in the eyes when they are talking. If you don’t do so,it means you are bored, hiding something,or are not interested. But when you stare at someone,it is not polite.
For Americans,thumbs-up means yes, very good,or well done.Thumbs-down means the opposite. To call a waiter, raise one hand to head level or above. To show you want the check, make a movement with your hands as if you are singing a piece of paper. It is all right to point at things but not at people with the hand and index finger(食指).Americans shake their index finger at children when they scold them and pat them on the head when they admire them.
Learning a culture’s body language is sometimes confusing. If you don’t know what to do,the safest thing to do is to smile.
1.From the first paragraph we can learn that________.
A.gestures don’t mean anything while talking
B.gestures can help us to express ourselves
C.we can learn a language well without body language
D.only American people can use gestures
2.If you are introduced to a stranger from the USA,you should________.
A.greet him with a hug
B.place a hand on his shoulder
C.shake his hand firmly
D.shake his hand weakly
3.In the United States,people often________.
A.show their friendship by touching each other
B.show their friendship by glancing at each other
C.say “Pardon me ‘to each other when they are talking’”
D.get uncomfortable when you sit close to them
4.If you talk with an American friend,it’s polite to________.
A.look up and down at your friend
B.look at the other person in the eyes

Competition. It’s a simple word, yet a very complex word that covers many angles when it comes to how gasoline prices are determined. It seems so easy to explain, but don’t let that trick you—it’s incredibly difficult to explain and adequately understand.
Say you’re on a Sunday afternoon drive, and notice a gas station near you charging $3.50.Down the road a few miles, that price could easily be 10 or more cents higher or lower. The question is “how” or “why” is that?Think of it this way.Are you more likely to get a better deal on a car if there are two similar car dealers next to each other?Perhaps, because the dealers are too close.Say there is a third similar car dealer miles away.Is he going to be at the same level of competition and sell his cars for the same price as the two dealers next to each other?Likely not.He may charge more or less.Maybe people don’t know there are two other dealers down the road.Maybe the dealer is almost outside of the city and the land value isn’t as high,so his taxes aren’t as high.
These situations do take place at gas stations. And more factors can impact what a station will charge.Timing can greatly impact what price a station charges as well! Many motorists fail to realize that the price a station pays for gasoline changes daily. If one station gets lucky and buys gas on Monday and the cost goes up Tuesday, the station that bought on Monday doesn’t necessarily have to raise prices like the station that bought on Tuesday.Maybe the station that got caught buying for a higher price on Tuesday will pass that higher cost on by raising its gas price.
Perhaps the difference is what brand the station is—branded stations usually pay a slightly higher cost for their gasoline. In return for paying a higher cost, those stations are guaranteed first supply in case of emergency situations.Independent stations don’t pay as much, but aren’t guaranteed supply.
While competition sounds easy to understand, there are always a large number of factors that could influence what one station charges.Keep in mind how many variables(变数) there are next time you fill up.

College graduation brings both the satisfaction of academic achievement and the expectation of a well-paid job.But for 6,000 graduates at San Jose State this year, there’s uncertainty as they enter one of the worst job markets in decades.Ryan Stewart has a freshly-minted(新兴的) degree in religious studies, but no job prospects.
“You look at everybody’s parents and neighbors, and they’re getting laid off and don’t have jobs,” said Stewart.“Then you look at the young people just coming into the workforce...it’s just scary.”
When the class of 2003 entered college, the future never looked brighter. But in the four years they’ve been here, the world outside has changed dramatically.
“Those were the exciting times, lots of dot-com opportunities, exploding offers, students getting top dollar with lots of benefits,”said Cheryl Allmen-Vinnidge of the San Jose State Career Center.“Times have changed. It’s a new market.”
Cheryl Allmen-Vinnidge ought to know. She runs the San Jose State Career Center, sort of a crossroads between college and the real world.Allmen-Vinnidge says students who do find jobs after college have done their homework.
“The typical graduate who does have a job offer started working on it two years ago. They’ve postured(定位) themselves well during the summer. They’ve had several internships(实习),” she said. And they’ve majored in one of the few fields that are still hot, like chemical engineering, accounting,or nursing, where average starting salaries have actually increased over last year.Other popular fields (like information systems management, computer science, and political science) have seen big declines in starting salaries.
Ryan Stewart (he had hoped to become a teacher) may just end up going back to school.“I’d like to teach college some day and that requires more schooling, which would be great in a bad economy,” he said.

Arthur Miller (1915~2005) is universally recognized as one of the greatest dramatists of the 20th century.Miller’s father had moved to the USA from Austria-Hungary,drawn like so many others by the “Great American Dream”.However,he experienced severe financial hardship when his family business was ruined in the Great Depression of the early 1930s.
Miller’s most famous play,Death of a Salesman,is a powerful attack on the American system, with its aggressive way of doing business and its insistence on money and social status as indicators of worth. In Willy Loman, the hero of the play,we see a man who has got into trouble with this system.Willy is “burnt out” and in the cruel world of business there is no room for sentiment:if he can’t do the work, then he is no good to his employer, the Wagner Company, and he must go.Willy is painfully aware of this, and at a loss as to what to do with his lack of success. He refuses to face the fact that he has failed and kills himself in the end.
When it was first staged in 1949,the play was greeted with enthusiastic reviews, and it won the Tony Award for Best Play, the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was the first play to win all three of these major awards.

A letter to Edward,a columnist(报刊专栏作家)
Dear Mr.Expert,
I grew up in an unhappy and abusive home.I always promised myself that I’d get out as soon as possible. Now,at age 20,I have a good job and a nice house, and I’m really proud of the independence I’ve achieved.
Here’s the problem: several of my friends who still live with their parents wish they had places like mine—so much so that they make mine theirs.
It started out with a couple of them spending the weekends with me.But now they seem to take it for granted that they can show up any time they like. They bring boyfriends over, talk on the phone and stay out forever.
I enjoy having my friends here sometimes—it makes the place feel comfortable and warm—but this is my home, not a party house.I am old enough to move out on my own,so why can’t I seem to ask my friends to respect my privacy(隐私)?
Joan
Edward’s reply to Joan
Dear Joan,
If your family didn’t pay attention to your needs when you were a child, you probably have trouble letting others know your needs now.
And if you’ve gathered your friends around you to rebuild a happy family atmosphere, you may fear that saying no will bring back the kind of conflict you grew up with—or destroy the nice atmosphere you now enjoy. You need to understand that in true friendship it’s okay to put your own needs first from time to time.
Be clear about the message you want to send. For example,“I really love your company but I also need some privacy. So please call before you come over.”
Edward

Michelle Obama has just started a campaign against childhood obesity (肥胖) with the admission that she put her girls Malia and Sasha on a diet because they were getting fat.Clearly, childhood obesity must be solved urgently. But is it a good idea for mothers to put their daughters on diets?
Studies show that the more children diet, the more likely they are to become obese as adults.Research also shows that girls are highly influenced by their mothers when it comes to eating habits and body images.
This was the case for Carly,40,who blames her mother for her lifelong struggle with weight.“My mother was on a diet the whole time when I was growing up,” she says.“And she put me on my first diet when I was 10.I lost puppy fat, gained her approval and never ate normally again.”
America’s First Lady clearly has a vital healthy eating message to convey. But could this be damaging for Malia and Sasha?Could they develop eating disorders because of it?
“It’s wrong just to blame mothers for their daughters’ eating disorders,” says Susan Ringwood, chief executive of the eating disorders charity,Beat.“There is a genetic (基因的) component to eating disorders. However,we do know that parents have a very strong influence over a child’s eating. It’s important to realize that you are your daughter’s role model.Girls idolize their mothers.” says Ringwood.
“No food should ever be ‘good’ or ‘bad’,” Ringwood says,“Instead, you have to make it clear that food is a sociable, healthy and fun part of life, not something to be feared.”
“Talk to her about body image,” Ringwood says.“Talk about how curves are an important and exciting part of being a woman.Show her that anorexic (厌食的) fashion models are not sexy, but ill.The pressure on girls today is immense,” she says.“But don’t forget that you are the authoritative voice, too.”

from_the_picture,the balance of love between parents and children tilts.Parents’ love for children is much heavier than children’s love for parents.
In most families, parents give selfless love to their children. On the other hand, parents can hardly feel any love from their children. The reasons can be listed as follows.First of all, parents give too much love to their children.Children become more and more selfish.Secondly, some children are too young to learn to pay back the love from parents. In addition, some children think that there is no need to pay back the love from parents.
As far as I am concerned,I think we children should learn to thank our parents. This is because parents are the ones who give all the love to us but do not ask for any payback. As students,we should try to study hard to make our parents proud of us.

Is a Training Class or Family Teacher Necessary?
More_and_more_middle_school_students_are_going_to_all_kinds_of_training_classes_or_having_family_teachers_at_the_weekend.
Our class had a heated debate. There are two different viewpoints about it.
Some think it necessary.Firstly,it’s more effective to study with a teacher than by themselves.Secondly,it can strengthen what has been learnt in class.Besides, they can learn a lot more.Others think it unnecessary. For one thing, students can easily form the habit of dependence. For another, students need time to relax from time to time. What’s more, the purpose of many training classes and family teachers is to make money.
In my opinion, whether a training class or family teacher is needed just depends. If you are really very weak at or interested in a certain subject, maybe it’s OK for you.But be sure to choose a good and suitable class or teacher, otherwise it would be a waste of time and money.
