In bringing up children, every parent watches eagerly the child’s acquisition (学会) of each new skill in the first spoken words, the first independent steps, or the beginning of reading and writing. It is often tempting to hurry the child beyond his natural learning rate, but this can set up dangerous feelings of failure and states of worry in the child. This might happen at any stage.A baby might be forced to use a toilet too early, a young child might be encouraged to learn to read before he knows the meaning of the words he reads. On the other hand, though, if a child is left alone too much, or without any learning opportunities, he loses his natural enthusiasm for life and his desire to find out new things for himself.
Parents vary greatly in their degree of strictness towards their children. Some may be especially strict in money matters.Others are severe over time of coming home at night or punctuality for meals. In general, the controls represent the needs of the parents and the values of the community as much as the child’s own happiness.
As regards the development of moral standards in the growing child, consistency is very important in parental teaching. To forbid a thing one day and excuse it the next is no foundation for morality. Also, parents should realize that “example is better than precept”.If they are not sincere and do not practice what they preach (说教), their children may grow confused when they grow old enough to think for themselves, and realize they have been to some extent fooled.
A sudden awareness of a marked difference between their parents’ principles and their morals can be a dangerous disappointment.

A.should encourage them to read before they know the meaning of the words they read
B.should expect a lot of the children
C.should achieve a balance between pushing them too hard and leaving them on their own
D.should create as many learning opportunities as possible
3.The second paragraph mainly tells us that ________.
A.parents should be strict with their children
B.parental controls reflect only the values of the community
C.parental restrictions vary, and are not always for the benefit of the children alone
D.it’s parents’ and society’s duty to control the children
4.The underlined word “precept” in Paragraph 3 probably means “________”.
A.opinion B.punishment

There was once a professor of medicine, who was very strict with his students.Whenever he took the chair on the exam committee(担任考试委员会主席),the students would be in fear, because he was seldom pleased with the answers they gave.A student would be lucky enough if he or she could receive a good mark from him.At the end of the term, the students of medicine would take their exam again. Now a student entered the exam room and got seated before the committee. This student was a little nervous as he knew it would not be so easy to get through the exam at all.

When I first arrived in China around a year ago,I wasn’t worried about the food or the language barriers.I only had one concern:how am I going to watch soccer? In the UK where I grew up,matches are scheduled for prime time TV viewing.I could always look forward to a lazy Sunday afternoon in the pub watching Manchester United or Liver pool. However,in China, the time difference means that these evening games actually start at 3∶45 a.m.
When the alarm sounded at 3 a.m. it was a struggle to drag myself out of bed.Determined not to miss the action,I got dressed and set off,weary-eyed(双眼困乏的),to find a taxi. When I arrived I was surprised.I wasn’t the only midnight soccer fan.The bar was packed with Liverpool fans who were there to support their team. With each Liverpool goal,a huge cheer erupted.Throughout the match a large group of Chinese fans sang songs about their heroes—often in perfect Liverpudlian accents.Other supporters discussed the game over a beer.
Along with the excitement came a sense of community.Only the most dedicated(专注的) soccer followers would sacrifice(牺牲) sleep for a big match.Back home supporting a soccer team is a fashion statement for many.Politicians talk about soccer to appear in touch with common people. But in this small bar in Beijing I’d found a truer type of soccer fan. These fans loved the game so much that they’d watch it whatever the time.
I’ll be returning to the UK for Christmas—the time of year spent with family, eating turkey, giving presents, and,of course, watching soccer. But I might just miss the 3 a.m. taxi rides and midnight fans of Beijing. After all, where’s the fun in watching soccer at a normal time?
5.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the article?
A.In the UK,the author preferred to watch soccer matches at home with his families.
B.In the UK,big soccer matches are more often broadcast on TV in the evenings than in the mornings.
C.In China, the author usually stayed up all night in order not to miss a soccer game.
D.The bar where the author went was noisy, which the author didn’t like.
6.By mentioning the Chinese fans in the bar singing songs in perfect Liverpudlian accents, the author intends to show________.
A.the fans’ good knowledge of foreign language
B.the fans’ passion and support for their heroes
C.the messy but friendly atmosphere in the bar
D.typical ways that the fans spent time in the bar
7.Which fails to show “the sense of community” caused by soccer according to the article?
A.Soccer fans struggling to support their favorite teams at midnight.
B.Soccer fans cheering only for their own national teams.
C.Politicians trying to impress the public by saying that they like soccer.
D.Soccer fans who prefer to watch a match in a bar together with other fans.
8.When the author returns to the UK and watches soccer,he thinks he will________.
A.feel relieved and satisfied to be at home

It can’t be denied that network applications have had a great effect on the life of people. However, many high school students are addicted to network and this phenomenon has aroused the concern of the whole society.People ask the law departments to strengthen the regulation of network sites, and resolutely stop the minors from entering the Internet bar.

四、阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
请阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
Do you have bright ideas? Ideas or inventions that change society or,at least, make life easier for somebody? Perhaps we all do sometimes, but we don’t often make the idea a reality.Recently,in Britain, there was a competition called British Designers for Tomorrow. The competition encourages young people to carry out their bright ideas. There were two groups in the contest: Group One was for schoolchildren under 16; Group Two was for schoolchildren over 16,and there were eleven prize-winners altogether.
Neil Hunt, one of the prize-winners,was called “Sunshine Superman”.It’s important when people study the weather to be able to record sunshine accurately. We need to know how many hours of sunshine we have and how strong it is.Most sunshine recorders only record direct sunlight.Neil’s is more accurate and this is very important for research into the way of using solar power.
You can do so much with animated cartoon.Look at Simon West’s idea for animated road signs. He uses pictures which appear to move as you go nearer to or farther from them. This isn’t a new idea. But it is new to use these pictures on road signs.“We found that people were more likely to see moving signs,” said Simon. So now,you can really see rocks falling, trains moving, horses running or a car falling over the edge of a cliff.Quite a warning!
The ideas in the competition were so inventive that we are surprised that British industry doesn’t ask more schoolchildren for suggestions.Perhaps this will be the start of “pupil power”!
56.The writer seems to be encouraging the British industry to________.
A.help schoolchildren in their studies
B.take better care of schoolchildren
C.stop asking schoolchildren for suggestions
D.pay more attention to schoolchildren’s inventive power
57.Neil Hunt’s design would finally lead to the improvement of the way of ________.
A.recording direct sunshine
B.knowing how strong sunlight is
C.using the energy of the sun
D.recording the hours of sunshine
58.The organizers of the competition hoped the schoolchildren would________.
A.become good designers for future Britain
B.win as many prizes as they could
C.design something useful for the next day
D.invent something for immediate use
59.What’s the use of Simon West’s animated road signs?
A.To add to the beauty of a city.
B.To warn people on the roads of the danger ahead.
C.To help make a car trip more exciting.
D.To warn people to be careful while working.
B
External bleeding.Apply direct pressure.Place a clean, folded cloth over the injured area and firmly apply pressure. If blood soaks through,do not remove it.Instead, cover that cloth with another one and continue to apply pressure to the wound for 7—10 minutes. If the bleeding is from the ear, place a clean bandage over the ear,lay the victim on his side, and follow the blood to drain out through the bandage.
Elevate the injury.Position the wounded part of the body above the level of the heart if possible while you apply direct pressure.
Know the pressure point. If direct pressure and elevation don’t sufficiently slow the bloodflow, find a pressure point.Large arteries(动脉) found close to the skin’s surface supply blood to the head and to each arm and leg.The most common pressure points used during the first aid are located in the upper arms and in the creases above the upper legs.Apply pressure to the closest pressure point to the wound so that the artery is pressed between your fingers and the bone directly behind the artery. If using the pressure point on a leg,you may need to use the heel of your hand instead of your fingers.
Resort to tourniquet(止血带,脉压器).On very rare occasions everything listed above may fail.To prevent the victim from dying, you should apply a tourniquet.Once a tourniquet is applied,it should not be loosened or removed until the victim has reached medical help.Use a tourniquet only if everything listed above has failed. If you use a tourniquet, write down somewhere on the victim the time when it was applied,so medical persons will know how long it has been in place.
60.According to the passage,if a person is wounded and bleeding, you should________.
A.cover the wound with a clean, folded cloth and press it
B.spread some salve (药膏) on the wound

Brian arrived at the San Francisco airport two hours before the flight to Paris. He was wearing three shirts,a jacket, two pairs of socks,a pair of shorts, and two pairs of jeans. He was carrying one small backpack, which was very full, but he didn’t have any other luggage.Brian needed to meet a man named Tony before he checked in for his flight. He found Tony near the Air France counter.Tony gave him a round-trip ticket and a small package.
“Give this package to Jean-Paul at the airport in Paris. He will have a sign with your name on it.I think you can find him easily,”Tony said.“You don’t have any luggage, right?”
“Only this backpack,”Brian answered.“You said I could bring one carry-on bag.”
“That’s right.One carry-on bag is fine.Have a good trip.”
“Thanks.”
Is Brian a criminal(犯罪)?Not at all.He is an air-courier.And he paid only $110 for the round-trip ticket to Paris.Air-couriers get cheap airline tickets because they take important packages and papers to foreign countries.Businesses sometimes need to get packages and papers to people in foreign countries by the next day.Often, the only way they can do this is to use an air-courier company. It is not cheap for a business to send a package with an air-courier,but it is quick.

Almost no young people today know who the cartoon character Oswald the Rabbit is,but they certainly recognize his successor,Bugs Bunny.Oswald,Bugs, and hundreds of other characters were created by Walt Disney, perhaps the most famous cartoonist in history.
Born in Chicago in 1901,Walt Disney always wanted to be an artist. After returning from World War Ⅰ,in which he drove an ambulance,Disney worked as a commercial artist. He enjoyed drawing cartoons more than anything else, and decided to try his hand at a technology that was new at the time, moving pictures.
In the 1920’s,he produced several films where he made cartoon characters move as if by magic. The technique Disney used was painstaking. He made hundreds or even thousands of repeated drawings of the same character. In each drawing, the character was changed just a bit.A film was taken of the series of drawings, and when it was shown, the characters appeared to move. The process, called animation,is still used today, although computers have made the process much easier.
In 1928,Disney created his most famous character,Mortimer Mouse, who we know today as Mickey. The mouse starred in a cartoon called Steamboat Willie, which was unusual because it involved the use of a sound track.Within the next few years,Disney invented many of his other characters.
The list of Disney’s animation successes is long and memorable. It includes Pinocchio,Dumbo,Bambi,Cinderella, and Peter Pan.Perhaps his most remarkable animated film is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.Created in 1937,it was an immediate success.Today, more than fifty years later,it is still one of the most popular films for children.
68.What is one of the chief differences between animation today and in Walt Disney’s early years?
A.More people like animated movies.
B.Fewer people like animated movies.
C.Computers have made the job easier.
D.Computers have made the job harder.
69.Which of these words best describes Walt Disney?
A.Creative. B.Athletic. C.Exciting. D.Quiet.
70.What makes the film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs so remarkable?
A.It was a little success when created.
B.It took more than a year to make it.
C.It was made at a time when there were no computers.
D.It has remained popular for more than fifty years.
71.The author of this passage would probably agree that ________.
A.Oswald the Rabbit is well-known today
B.Walt Disney is a remarkable person
C.animation is an easy technique
D.cartoons move by magic

There are two types of people in the world.Although they have equal degrees of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy while the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.
People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things:the pleasant parts of conversations, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied.By their remarks, they sour_the_pleasure_of_society,offend (hurt) many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing (批评) and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation (模仿).It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have realized its bad effects on their interests and tastes.I hope this little warning may help them change this habit.
Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination,it has serious results in life, since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others;nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success.Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections,no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrongdoings. These people should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not,it will be good for others to avoid any contact with them.Otherwise,it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.
72.People who are unhappy________.
A.always consider things differently from others
B.usually are affected by the results of certain things
C.usually misunderstand what others think or say
D.always discover the unpleasant side of certain things
73.The underlined part “sour the pleasure of society” in Paragraph 2 most nearly means “________”.
A.have a good taste with social life
B.make others unhappy
C.tend to scold others openly
D.enjoy the pleasure of life
74.We can conclude from the passage that________.
A.we should pity all such unhappy people
B.such unhappy people are dangerous to social life
C.people can get rid of the habit of unhappiness
D.unhappy people can not understand happy persons
75.If such unhappy persons insist on keeping the habit, the author suggests that people should________.
A.prevent any communication with them
B.show no respect and politeness to them
C.persuade them to recognize the bad effects
D.quarrel with them until they realize the mistakes

A_recent_survey_shows_what_the_students_of_our_school_like_to_do_in_their_spare_time.From the chart it can be apparently seen that as many as 53% of the students would devote their spare time to sports, for example ball games, while 36% of them say they find pleasure in surfing the Internet.Meanwhile,8% of the students like to do some reading, with 3% playing musical instruments.
From the chart we can safely draw the conclusion that most students pay attention to their health, which can obviously guarantee the students enough time and energy for their studies. But it has also come to our notice that many students have spent a lot of time on the Internet, which I fear may have a negative effect on their studies. However,it can’t be a better idea for students to play some music when they’re free, thus making them relaxed and refreshed for their studies.
In a word,we should distribute our spare time properly.

Should Our Parents Accompany Us in Studying at School?
In_recent_years,many_parents_choose_to_accompany_their_children_in_studying,which
has_aroused_a_wide_concern.
These parents are willing to leave their hometown, even quit their jobs to follow their children into the campus. Most of them rent an apartment nearby so as to take good care of their children.Parents consider it necessary to offer a better living condition to their children.Meanwhile,it enables them to keep track of their children’s academic performance.
Nevertheless, what they have ignored is that it will get their kids into the habit of being dependent. Thus, they will never develop the ability of self-control in the future.
Trust leads to independence. So it seems to me parents should create space for children’s growth and study in order to ensure their overall development.
