Computers are increasingly important in health care. But can they also help poor people escape poverty?Vikram Sheel Kumar thinks so.Mr.Kumar is a doctor,an engineer and the head of a small business in Boston,Massachusetts. And,in September, this 28-year-old man received an award for Technology in Service to Humanity. That award came from Technology Review magazine.
His goal is to improve health care in poor nations with the help of computers small enough to hold in one hand. These devices are known as personal digital assistants,or P.D.A.’s.
Dr.Kumar started his company two years ago.It is called Dimagi, which means “smart guy” in Hindi. His parents came from India. There,Dimagi computer programs are used to organize medical information on more than 70,000 patients.
Dr.Kumar says health care workers had problems at first, but then learned quickly how to use the devices.Nurses no longer have to carry heavy documents whenever they travel to villages. And they no longer have to copy large amounts of health information by hand.
In South Africa, health workers are using a Dimagi program for a different purpose in the KwaZulu-Natal area. They use it to provide patients with results from tests for HIV,the virus that causes AIDS.People who get tested must enter a secret identification code to see the results.
And,in Boston, children with diabetes are using a Dimagi system to learn about their disease and how to control it.The software includes games and ways for the children to communicate with others with diabetes.
Dr.Kumar says it is important to get patients involved in their own health care by helping them gain information. He says there are endless possible uses for this technology, especially in developing countries. And he urges people to suggest ways to improve it.Dimagi programs are written in code that is open to anyone.

A good sense of humor does a lot of good things for a person. It makes him more likable and increases his attractiveness. Also, people with a good sense of humor tend to be very natural at starting and leading a good conversation.
When I was a little girl,my dad always made me laugh by his talks with strangers—let’s say like a waitress. We went out to eat fairly often and he always seemed to have something new to say that was very funny. Then we enjoyed our meal.We would get great service and Dad tipped well.
I really don’t remember my mom making me laugh like him.She mostly just laughed with me.The next person who pops into my head is my son.He makes me laugh very often.I begged him after surgery(外科手术)to stop making me laugh because the laughing made my wound hurt.My daughter is fairly quick-witted,too,and her daughter as well. When my granddaughter and my son are together, their talks are delightful and very funny.A meal is so much better when it is eaten over laughter.
All my colleagues have different senses of humor and I love all of them.We have a fairly good sense of humor in the office.I would say most of my clients also have a sense of humor.Dealing with them is relaxing.
Here are some priceless humor tips on how to improve yours:1.Find the funny side in everything.2.Get together with people who are fun and humorous.3.Don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself.4.Read as many funny jokes as possible.
Humor is great laughter therapy (疗法).It can really lighten things up in your workplace,in a relationship, and anywhere else. So,use these tips to cultivate your own sense of priceless humor.

It may help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech. At some point in every speech, every speaker says something that is not understood exactly as he has planned.Fortunately, such moments are usually not obvious to the listeners. Why? Because the listeners do not know what the speaker plans to say. They hear only what the speaker does say.If you lose your place for a moment, wrongly change the order of a couple of sentences, or forget to pause at a certain point, no_one_will_be_any_the_wiser.When such moments occur, don’t worry about them.Just continue as if nothing happened.
Even if you do make an obvious mistake during a speech, that doesn’t really matter. If you have ever listened to Martin Luther King’s famous speech—“I Have a Dream”, you may notice that he stumbled (结巴) over his words twice during the speech. Most likely, however, you don’t remember. Why? Because you were fixing your attention on his message rather than on his way of speech-making.
People care a lot about making a mistake in a speech because they regard speech-making as a kind of performance rather than as an act of communication. They feel the listeners are like judges in an ice-skating competition. But, in fact, the listeners are not looking for a perfect performance. They are looking for a well-thought-out speech that expresses the speaker’s ideas clearly and directly.Sometimes a mistake or two can actually increase a speaker’s attractiveness by making him more human.
As you work on your speech, don’t worry about being perfect.Once you free your mind of this, you will find it much easier to give your speech freely.
1.The underlined part in the first paragraph means that no one will ________.
A.be smarter than you
B.notice your mistakes
C.do better than you
D.know what you are talking about
2.You don’t remember obvious mistakes in a speech because ________.
A.your attention is on the content

“Most experiences of absent-mindedness—forgetting where you left something or wondering why you just entered a room—are caused by a simple lack of attention,” says Schacter.“You’re supposed to remember something, but you haven’t encoded it deeply.”
Encoding,Schacter explains,is a special way of paying attention to an event that has a major impression on recalling it later.Failure to encode properly can create troublesome situations. If you put your mobile phone in a pocket, for example, and don’t pay attention to what you did because you’re involved in a conversation, you’ll probably forget that the phone is in the jacket now hanging in your cupboard.“Your memory itself isn’t failing you,” says Schacter.“Rather, you didn’t give your memory system the information it needed.”
Lack of interest can also lead to absent-mindedness.“A man who can recite sports statistics from 30 years ago,” says Zelinski,“may not remember to drop a letter in the mailbox.” Women have slightly better memories than men, possibly because they pay more attention to their environment, and memory relies on just that.
“Visual cues(视觉提示) can help prevent absent-mindedness,” says Schacter,“But be sure the cue is clear and available.” If you want to remember to take a medicine with lunch, put the pill bottle on the kitchen table—don’t leave it in the medicine box and write yourself a note that you keep in a pocket.
Another common experience of absent-mindedness is:walking into a room and wondering why you’re there. Most likely, you were thinking about something else.“Everyone does this from time to time,”says Zelinski.“The best thing to do is to return to where you were before entering the room, and you’ll likely remember.”
1.The writer of the passage thinks that encoding properly is very important because ________.
A.it enables us to recall something from our memory
B.it slows down the process of losing our memory
C.it helps us understand our memory system better
D.it helps us to get back to where we were
2.One possible reason why women have a little better memories than men is that ________.
A.they rely more on the environment
B.they have a wider range of interests
C.they have an unusual power of focusing their attention
D.they are more interested in what’s happening around them
3.From the last paragraph we can learn that ________.
A.repetition might help improve our memory
B.memory depends to a certain extent on the environment
C.we’d better return to where we were if we forget things
D.we should think about something else while doing one thing
4.The passage is mainly about ________.
A.the memory system of persons
B.a way of encoding and recalling
C.the causes of absent-mindedness
D.the impression of the environment on memory

What I’ve noticed about some very successful business owners is that they are always learning and growing.
For your business to be better you need to be better and you don’t get better by doing nothing!
You are the average of the five PEOPLE you hang around with most.Surround yourself with people whom you want to be like.
To do this you may have to get right out of your comfort zone and join in a coaching program,go along to seminars (专题讨论会) where you can meet other like-minded people or those playing at a higher level of business than you.
There’s no excuse not to get_off_your_butt and learn your way to success.Regardless of where you are located events are taking place all around the country regularly as well as online.Saying you have “no money” or “no time” is not a good enough excuse.
For many business owners they spend their whole lives using these excuses and going nowhere.Don’t focus on where you are now,but where you want to be.You’ll find the money and the time if you seriously want to change.
Your ongoing learning can take you from struggling along to soaring high in all areas of your life.
It’s been nearly six months since you made those New Year decisions to make changes in your business and your life.
Are you getting the results you wanted?
Is your business more profitable?
Do you have more free time?
Is the quality of your life improving?
If you answer “yes”,then take a look at why that is.What have you been doing to get these results? And if you’re not moving ahead, seriously look at why that is.When is the last time you read a book, listened to a CD,got coached or attended a seminar to learn how to do things better?
The people I know who are getting great results in their business and personal lives are always learning and growing.
You are the Secret to Your Success,so do everything within your power to invest in yourself.

With the start of the new semester, students around the country exchange their fun and fashionable clothes for boring school uniforms.
“The uniform makes us look like a_bunch_of_clones,_especially when we are doing morning exercises in the playground, ”said Qing, a Senior 2 from a high school in Shanghai.“But we are not exactly the same from the top to the bottom. The boys wear different sports shoes and girls have different decorations in their hair. These are the areas where you can express yourself,” said Qing.
Although it might be strange for boys to talk about fashion, they do care about what they wear in school, especially shoes, according to Qing.
“Nike and Adidas basketball shoes, although they are still the must for many of my friends, are becoming out-of-date,”Qing added. He explained, “Since Liu Xiang ran so fast in Athens, running shoes are becoming popular in this autumn.”
“Still in fashion are the various baseball caps and American-style T-shirts with random English words printed on them, ”said Qing.“The accuracy of the written message isn’t important.Often, the words are misspelt.Sometimes they do not even make sense,”Qing said with a smile.
Besides sports shoes and T-shirts, styles and colours of school bags are another opportunity for students to express their taste in fashion. Some bags are made more eye-catching by decorating them with small hanging dolls.Other fashionable items are the colourful drink containers which are now popular among girls this semester.

Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr.Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.
During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”,that’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why it is so,but it leads to such familiar monologues (自言自语) as:“Get up,John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening.Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.
You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better.Habit can help,Dr.Kleitman believes.Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway.Counteract (对抗) your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to.If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy.Get up with a leisurely yawn (呵欠) and stretch.Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor.Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before.Whenever possible,do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.

We lived in a very quiet neighborhood. One evening I heard a loud crash in the street.Earlier that evening my wife had asked me to go to the store to get some soft drinks. It seemed like this would be a good time to let my teenage daughter Holly practice her driving,so I sent her to the store in my truck.
At dinner my son talked about how much he liked my truck.I enjoyed having it,but I said,“Guy,my heart is not set on that truck.I like it but it is just metal and won’t last forever.Never set your heart on anything that won’t last.”
After hearing the loud noise, the whole family ran outside. My son shouted,“Dad!Dad!Holly crashed your truck.”
My heart sank and my mind was flooded with conflicting thoughts. Was anyone hurt?Who else was involved? As I ran to the door,I heard a voice in my heart say,“Here is a chance to show Holly what you really love. She’ll never forget it.”
The accident had occurred in my own driveway.Holly had crashed my truck into our other vehicle, the family van (搬运车).In her inexperience, she had confused the brakes and the gas pedal.Holly was unhurt physically, but when I reached her,she was crying and saying,“Oh,Dad,I’m sorry.I know how much you love this truck.” I held her in my arms as she cried.
Later that week a friend stopped by and asked what had happened to my truck.I told her the whole story. Her eyes moistened and she said,“That happened to me when I was a girl.I borrowed my dad’s car and ran into a log that had fallen across the road.I ruined the car. When I got home my dad knocked me to the ground and began to kick me.”
Over 40 years later, she still felt the pain of the night. It was a deep wound on her soul.
I remember how sad Holly was the night she crashed our truck, and how I comforted her.One day, when Holly thinks back on her life,I want her to know that I love her a thousand times more than any piece of property.
I repaired the van,but the dent(凹痕) in my truck is still there today.Every day it reminds me of what really matters in my life.

There were smiling children all the way.Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang.Often the whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia.I was moved.
I had always travelled to Malaysia by plane or by car,so this was the first time I was on a train.I did not particularly relish the long train journey and had brought along a dozen magazines to read and reread.I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face.I sighed and sat down to read my Economics.
It was not long before the train was across the Causeway in Malaysia.Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore,so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past.As we went beyond the city,I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight.Immediately I came alive,I decided to wave back.
From then on my journey became interesting.I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me.Even the trees were smiling.I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.
The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry.I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3∶00 p.m..Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth.I looked at the people all around me.They all looked beautiful. When my uncle arrived with a smile,I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug.I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his weather-beaten face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.
I looked forward to the return journey.

In the picture, there stands a tree full of fruit on one side of the stream.Across the stream,a man is trying to reach out on the edge of the bank for the fruit with a net attached to a pole. Not far away there is a bridge that can lead him to the tree for more fruit.
The message conveyed in the picture is clear. In pursuing a dream,we might focus on only one way of making it come true, forgetting that there may be alternatives. As indicated in the picture,if the man is willing to look for other possibilities,he can find a better and more rewarding way to achieve his goal. All he has to do is to turn around, cross the bridge and walk to the tree.

This_morning,when I was walking on the street,I saw that two travelers were reading a map, looking puzzled. It seemed they were lost.I went up to them and asked how I could help. They told me they were looking for the Temple of Heaven.I led them to the nearby bus stop and advised them to take Bus No.20,which could take them there directly. They appreciated my help greatly. Before long, the bus came.We waved goodbye to each other.Seeing them on the bus,I felt a kind of satisfaction.
