1.Before discussion,ask students to look at the pictures below carefully.
2.Ask students to discuss the following three questions.
·What do you know about malaria?
·What do you know about Tu Youyou?
·Do you know how artemisinin was discovered?
3.Before students read the text,ask them to discuss the following questions in groups.
·What kind of person makes great discoveries?
·Which is more important for making a great discovery,talent or effort?
Suggested answers:
·Most great discoverers are brilliant and hardworking. Many are perfectionists who are unwilling to accept anything but the best.
·I think both talent and effort are important for making discoveries. If a person doesn’t have some talent,it is possible that even though he or she works hard,it will be difficult to succeed. On the other hand,people—even those with great talent—rarely achieve anything without putting in efforts.

【设计意图】要抓住情节整体感知人物,从整体把握也是理解人物细节的基础。人物形象的塑造,常常是借助语言、行动、外貌和心理等方面的细节进行描写,抓住这些细节进行细致分析,就能逐步破解人物形象的性格密码,多侧面、多角度全面把握人物形象。抓好了“整体”与“细节”,就能避免孤立地分析人物,缺乏重点地把握人物。人物性格虽然是多侧面的,但一般有一个主导性格,特别是短篇作品中的人物。为此,要注意将不同细节所表现出的相同的性格加以合并。
活动三:概括与整合
1.Ask students to complete the following flow chart on Page 3.
