For years I wanted a flower garden. But then we had Matthew. And Marvin. And the twins,Alisa and Alan. And then Helen.I was too busy raising them to grow a garden.
Money was tight,as well as time.Often when my children were little, one of them would want something that cost too much, and I'd have to say,“Do you see a money tree outside?Money doesn't grow on trees, you know.”
Finally, all five got through high school and college and were off on their own.I started thinking again about having a garden.I wasn't sure, though.I mean, gardens do cost money.
Then, one spring morning,on Mother's Day,I was working in my kitchen.Suddenly,I realized that cars were tooting their horns as they drove by.I looked out of the window and there was a new tree, planted right in my yard.I thought it must be a weeping willow, because I saw things blowing around on all its branches.
There was a money tree in my yard! It was true! There were dollar bills, one hundred of them, taped all over that tree. There was also a note attached: “IOU eight hours of digging time.Love,Marvin.”
Marvin kept his promise, too. He dug up a nice tenbyfifteen foot bed for me.And my other children bought me tools, ornaments,a trellis,a sunflower stepping stone and gardening books.
That was three years ago.My garden's now very pretty, just like I wanted. When I go out and weed or tend my flowers,I don't seem to miss my children as much as I once did.It feels like they're right there with me.I think about what my children did for me,and I get tears in my eyesevery time.
I'm still not sure that money grows on trees. But I know love does!

Every member in your family needs to help out around the house in order to make things run smoothly. It's difficult for parents of nearly every family to teach their children to be responsible for housework.Home is where the school is.With one of the following suggestions, you really can get your children to help at home.
If you give your children the impression that they can never do a thing quite right, then they will regard themselves as unfit or unable persons.Unless children believe they can succeed, they will never become totally independent.
My daughter Carla's fifth grade teacher made every child in her class feel special. When students received less than a perfect test score, she would point out what they had mastered and declared firmly they could learn what they had missed.
You can use the same technique when you evaluate your child's work at home.Don't always scold and give lots of praise instead.Praise your child every time he does something good or something right. If children receive praise for a job well done,it encourages them to do well the next time too.But if their efforts go unnoticed they will not bother to try so hard the next time.If you praise your child often, you will notice a dramatic improvement in your child's behavior over time.If your child completes a difficult task, reward him with a Sunday trip or a ball game with Dad.
Learning is process of trying and failing and trying and succeeding. If you teach your children not to fear a mistake or failure, they will learn faster and achieve success at last.

A sense of humor is just one of the many things shared by Alfred and Anthony Melillo,64yearold twin brothers from East Haven who made history in February 2002.On Christmas Eve,1992,Anthony had a heart transplant from a 21yearold donor. Two days before Valentine's Day in 2002,Alfred received a 19yearold heart, marking the first time on record that twin adults each received heart transplants.
“I'm 15 minutes older than him,but now I'm younger because of my heart,” Alfred said with a wild smile, pointing to his brother while talking to a roomful of reporters, who laughed frequently at their jokes.
While the twins knew that genetics might have played a role in their condition, they recognized that their eating habits might have also contributed to their heart problems.“We'd put half a pound of butter on a steak.I overdid it on all the food that tasted good,so I guess I deserved what I got for not dieting properly.”
The discussion moved to Anthony's recovery. In the five years since his heart transplant,he had been on an exercise program where he regularly rode a bicycle for five miles, swam each day,and walked a couple of miles. He was still on medication, but not nearly as much as Alfred, who was just in the early stage of his recovery.
“Right now I feel pretty young and I'm doing very well,” Anthony said.“I feel like a new person.”
Alfred said his goal,of course, was to feel even better than his brother. But,he added,“I love my brother very much. We're very close and I'm sure we'll do just fine.”

Lakes, ponds, and beaches mean summer fun and cool relief from hot weather. But water also can be dangerous for kids if you don't take the proper precautions(预防措施).Nearly 1,000 kids die each year by drowning.
Here are some tips to keep your kids safe in the water:
At the Lake or Pond
·Don't let kids swim without adult supervision(监督)—lakes or ponds may be shallow near the bank and then increase in depth sharply further out from shore.
·Ponds and lakes may hide jagged rocks, broken glass,or trash.
·Make sure kids wear foot protection; even in the water, they should wear aqua socks or water shoes.
·Watch out for weeds and grass that could trap a leg or arm.
·Most boating accidents, particularly among teenagers, are related to alcohol.Be sure teens know about the dangers of alcohol,on and off the water.
At the Beach
·Teach kids to always swim when and where a lifeguard is on duty.Unlike the calm waters of a swimming pool, the beach has special dangers like currents and tides.Check with the lifeguard when you arrive to find out about the water conditions.
·Tell kids never to stand with their back to the water because a sudden wave can easily knock a child over.
·Teach kids that if they're caught in a rip current or undertow, they should swim parallel to the shore or should tread water and call for a lifeguard's help.
Whether at the lake or at the beach, teach your child to get out of the water during bad weather, especially lightning.

Ⅲ.
A

文章最后一段说明学习就是一个 “trying and failing and trying and succeeding”的过程,因此应选“失败是成功之母”。
C

答案:Dear Edward,
Thank you for your great help, with which I feel I have changed a lot and made great progress in English.
In the past,I didn't dare to speak English with my poor oral English. But now,I'm willing to communicate with others in English, especially some foreigners, for I can speak English more fluently. What's more,I have begun to read more and more English magazines, newspapers and other books, which is different from me in the past when I showed little interest in English and seldom read English articles. Now I have gained much confidence in English with my grade improving gradually. Thanks for your help.
I hope you'll continue to help me as much as possible and may our friendship last forever!
Yours,
Li Ming
