After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make the difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance curiosity and discontent. I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either. And I have never known an average man who had both. The two belong together.
Together, these deep human urges(驱策力)count for much more than ambition galileo was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground. Like galileo all the great names in history were curious and asked in discontent,“Why?Why?Why?”
Fortunately, curiosity and discontent don’t have to be learned. We are born with them and only need to recapture them
“The great man” said Mencius(孟子),“is he who does not lose his child’s heart. Yet most of us do lose it. We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd. And the crowd desires only the calm and restful average. It encourages us to occupy our own little corner,to avoid foolish leaps into the dark,to be satisfied.
Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. But once having met and liked them we think how terrible it would have been had we missed the chance. We will probably have to force ourselves to waken our curiosity and discontent and keep them awake.
How should you start?Modestly,so as not to become discouraged I think of one friend who couldn’t arrange flowers. to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the experts did it. Now she is one of the experts, writing books on flower arrangement.
One way to begin is to answer your own excuses. You haven’t any special ability Most people don’t; there are only a few geniuses. You haven’t any time That’s good, because it’s always the people with no time who get things done. Harriet Stowe, mother of six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom ‘s Cabin while cooking. You’ re too old Remember that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78.
However, you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now, for you’ll never be more alive than you are at this moment.
5. In writing Paragraph 1, the author aims to_______.
A. propose a definition
B. make a comparison
C. reach a conclusion
D. present an argument
6. What does the example of Galileo tell us
A. Trial and error leads to the finding of truth
B. Scientists tend to be curious and ambitious
C. Creativity results from challenging authority
D. Greatness comes from a lasting desire to explore
7. What can you do to recapture curiosity and discontent
A. Observe the unknown around you
B. Develop a questioning mind
C. Lead a life of adventure
D. Follow the fashion
8. What could be the best title for the passage
A. Curious minds Never Feel Contented
B. Reflections on Human Nature
C. The Keys to Achievement
D. Never Too late to learn

Your goal is not to be a perfect public speaker. 19 And like everything else in life, that takes practice. Remember even world champion athletes practice their skills on a consistent basis.
20 It’s rare to hear someone say, “I wish that speaker had spoken longer. On the other hand, you probably can’t count the times that you’ve thought,” I’m glad that talk is over. It seemed to go on forever! So surprise your audience. Always make your presentation just a bit shorter than anticipated. “The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it ” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness said Jenny as she wiped her tears. "Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She was so merciless compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you ”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock she remembered Mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why didn’t I think of that A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me. ”

根据 Jane Addams下的第一句话“Anyone who has ever been helped by a social worker has Jane Addams to thank.
根据“…she could not find work at a law firm because she was a woman. 根据 Sandra Day O’Connor下的第一句“When Sandra Day O’Connor finished third in her class at Stanford Law School.
根据 Rosa parks下的“. it also set off the Montgomery bus boycott. It lasted for more than a year, and kicked off the civil-rights movement.
根据 Jane Addams下的“…the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. ” Rachel Carson下的“If it weren’t for Rachel Carson, the environmental movement might not exist today. ”,Sandra Day O'Connor下的“the first woman to join the U. S. Supreme Court. . . ”以及 Rosa parks下的“…it also set off the Montgomery bus boycott…kicked off the civil-rights movement.
根据第四段中的“‘The great man, ’said Mencius, is he who does not lose his child’s heart Yet most of us do lose it We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd.
根据第三段中的“Her father is Francis ford Coppola, who directed the famous movie The Godfather. ”可知,导演电影 The Godfather的是 Sofia Coppola的父亲而不是Sofia Coppola,故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“She gradually became famous for films focusing on women.
根据第四段中的“She was named the ‘Worst Supporting Actress’ and ‘Worst New Star’ at the 1990 Golden Raspberry Awards for her acting in The Godfather: Part Ⅲ.
根据倒数第二段最后一句“She hopes that every kid can have a clean mouth and a broad smile.
G项中的“the majority of people(大多数人)”对应上句的“some individuals(一些人)”,“train to be(训练使然)”对应上句的“are born with(与生俱来)”。
a minor slip(小错误)与前文的 a mistake为同义替换。
这里的“less”指的是“less time”,“more”指的是“more benefits”或者“more gains”。
联系前文的 a dream came into her sweet little head-to be a swimmer可知,凯西想加入(join)我们当地的游泳队。
由空格前的 she coughed and choked可以看出,凯西一开始进行游泳训练遭遇了咳嗽、呛水等一系列困难,前几个星期几乎挺不下去(hardly survive her first few weeks)。

联系下文的 she would be the last swimmer及“But that didn't stop her from trying:"可以看出,凯西是一个意志坚定的(determined)人。

由and praise可知,凯西为朋友们喝彩(cheer on)。compete with比赛;respond to对……
