Unit 1
Unit 1
Knowing me, knowing you
-ed as adverbial
To learn the general knowledge of v.-ed as adverbial and practice it.
To enrich students’ expressions about healthy interpersonal relationships.
To learn how to refuse politely by doing some listening exercises.
Read and translate the following sentences, paying attention to the using of –ed form.
1. Seen from the hill, the city looks magnificent.
2. Deeply moved, Mr Cooper thanked him again and again.
3. Whenever asked about it, he could hardly hold back his emotions.
Mr Cooper
Look at the sentences from the reading passage and answer the questions.
a. Disappointed by his behaviour, I said all this to my best friend.
b. Approached in this way, your friendship will soon be repaired.
1. Who was disappointed in sentence (a) What is approached in
sentence (b)
Questions
I was disappointed in sentence (a).
“Your friendship” is approached in sentence (b).
2. Why does the author use -ed instead of -ing here
Because -ing is used when the action is done by the subject of the sentence, while -ed is used when the action is done to the subject of the sentence. Here, both “disappoint” and “approach” are actions done to the subjects.
Compare them with the following sentences and answer the questions.
c. Because I was disappointed by his behaviour, I said all this to my best friend.
b. If it is approached in this way, your friendship will soon be repaired.
3. What is the difference between the two groups of sentences
4. Why does the author choose to use -ed instead of an adverbial clause in the reading passage
Sentences (a) and (b) contain -ed as adverbial while sentences (c) and (d) contain adverbial clauses.
Questions
Because -ed makes the sentences shorter and sound more formal as written language.
eg Asked why he was late, Tom said it was because of the traffic jam.
Exhausted by the long journey, Mr Green soon fell asleep.
Given more money, I will buy another dress.
The woman entered the room, followed by her husband.
Laughed at by many other colleagues, David went on with his plan.
eg Offered help, we should say “Thank you”.
= When we are offered help, we should say “Thank you”.
Grown in rich soil, these seeds can grow fast.
= If they are grown in rich soil, these seeds can grow fast.
eg If bitten by a snake, you must ask for help quickly.
Once seen, the painting will be never forgotten.
Although defeated again, the player still did not give in.
Now look for more sentences with -ed as adverbial in the reading passage.
1. Embarrassed and ashamed, I can’t concentrate on anything.
2. Treated this way, you’re sure to feel hurt…
3. Filled with anger, you tend to say whatever comes to your mind.
e.g. Seen from the hill, the city is attractive.
Seeing from the hill, you can find the city attractive.
