Step I 学习理解
活动一:识别动词-ing形式作主语(Part1,P29)
1.Identify the function of the -ing form in the sentences below.
·Getting here is quite difficult.
·Being in such a beautiful and wild place makes me feel blessed to be alive.
Suggested answer:
The -ing forms in the examples are both used as subjects of their sentences.
2.Then find more sentences with the -ing form from the reading passage and state their functions.
Suggested answers:
①Even though the sun is brightly shining,telling whether it is morning or night is impossible.(作主语)
②Checking my watch,I see that it is7:30a.m.(作状语)
③Spreading out before me,branches of the Rapa River flow through the valley below.(作状语)

【设计意图】通过在课文中寻找更多含有动词-ing形式的句子,使学生在具体语境中分析句子结构,识别动词ing形式所作的成分。区别动词-ing形式作主语和作状语、补语等的不同用法,初步认识和理解动词-ing形式作主语的特征。
Step Ⅱ 应用实践
活动二:改写句子(Part2,P29)
Rewrite each of the following sentences using the -ing form as the subject. How does the sentence focus change?
EXAMPLE
It is challenging yet really fascinating to hike through the mountains in the pathless Sarek.
→Hiking through the mountains in the pathless Sarek is challenging yet really fascinating.
①It is both challenging and rewarding to study abroad. ②It would hardly be possible to go on a hiking tour in Sarek in winter due to the extreme cold. ③Honestly, it can be both exciting and terrifying to explore a vast unknown land. ④It is good to adopt a positive attitude, even when things are difficult. ⑤It is strongly advised to hire local guides, because they can offer accurate knowledge of Sarek culture and history.
Suggested answers:
①Studying abroad is both challenging and rewarding.

【设计意图】通过分析句子结构,很容易辨析原句中为了保持句子的平衡,使用了含有it作形式主语的句子,其后不定式才是整个句子的逻辑主语,在改写句子的时候把逻辑主语部分提到主语的位置,省略it,不定式的to do改为doing。让学生在分析句子成分,改写句子的练习中感受、总结动词-ing形式作主语的特征,并正确使用。
活动三:强化训练

Choose a place in your city or town as a destination for a school trip. Use the passage above as an example and write about your choice.
Suggested answer:
Huoshizhai National Geopark, locating in the mountainous region in northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, is called the Colorado, the Grand Canyon in China. Huoshizhai is famous for its unique “Danxia” landform. Danxia, which means rosy cloud, is a kind of special landform formed from reddish sandstones during the past one hundred million years. With the unusual rock formations attracting your eyes, you will feel the power of the nature and learn more about the geologic development of the northwestern China. Seeing the reddish sandstone mountains surrounded by curvaceous cliffs makes you feel the special beauty presented to us by the nature. Enjoying the life far away from city gives t people a kind of relaxation and refreshment. Smelling the fragrance of lilac along the paths in spring and breathing the fresh air are great pleasure. At Huoshizhai,walking in the valleys,climbing the reddish t sandstone mountains,appreciating thousands of stone caves dating back to Beiwei Dynasty are at the top of choices of people visiting here. A series of sandstone mountains telling mysterious stories are in diverse shapes of stone castle,pyramids,tall buildings,a crawling monster on the ground,two lovers,the flying stone,etc. Being home to 391 kinds of insects,181 kinds of vertebrates(脊椎动物),and 442 kinds of vascular plants(维管植物)attracts a lot of geologists and biologists to do research here. Being attracted by Huoshizhai's unique“Danxia”landform,the Hollywood film Asura chose Huoshizhai as its film t base.
