Unit4 Body Language单元测试
第一部分:阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
The mysterious science of reading gestures is explained using practical explanations and clear images. Gestures are products of both genetic (and environmental influences. Understanding our gestures is not as difficult as some people would have you believe. All human beings use them and so actually have a “built-in” ability to recognise and read it.
Fingers crossed it.
Generally this means “wishing for good luck or fortune”. Another explanation could be seen as “here’s hoping”. The gesture probably has Christian origins where the gesture was believed to get away from evil. As such, people believe that crossing the fingers when telling a lie somehow gets away from the evil of the lie. Some historians believe that crossing your fingers is a hidden or secret way of making the Christian sign of the cross—a perfect way of defeating evils. As a gesture it has both good and bad meanings. Luck or lies.
Waving the first finger
Mothers and teachers are common users with this hand gesture. In general, it is used to warn a single person. It is a change of the “you” gesture. If translated into language it would say “Stop whatever you are doing and pay attention to me. I am your superior and I am warning you!” Classed as a “silent” parent to child gesture, it is not completely allowed in an formal occasion where it will be explained as rude. Some psychologists believe that it has a meaning of the whip.
1. What can we infer from the first paragraph
A. Reading gestures is secret.
B. Gestures are formed in daily life.
C. Some people make reading gestures difficult on purpose.
D. It is hard to explain gestures by images.
2. If a Christian crosses his fingers, he wants to___________.
A. show he isn’t lucky
B. wish to succeed
C. gets away from the evil of the lie
D. cross the street
3. If your mum waves her first finger, she wants to____________.
A. wish for good luck
B. stop you
C. praise you
D. help you
B
When people find themselves in difficult conflicts, they often turn to mediation (调解). Mediators are advised to listen attentively, avoid favoring the ideas of one party, and make both sides feel at ease. Surprisingly, new research that my colleagues and I conducted shows that, to effectively help people settle their conflicts, mediators should adopt a hostile (敌意的) attitude rather than a calming one. A hostile mediator, we find, brings better results than a nice one.
Why would adding more negativity (消极性)to an already hostile situation prove beneficial Consider how parents typically react when they can’t get their children to stop quarreling; “I don’t care who started it. Both of you go to your rooms!” At first sight, a calm mediator seems likely to be more effective. But as anyone with brothers or sisters knows, parents’ seemingly (看上去) unsympathetic treatment of the situation can have an unusual effect.
In our research, we created situations in which pairs of negotiators were part of a heated conflict. In some cases, the mediator had a “nice” approach—calm and polite. In others, he was hostile—aggressive and somewhat rude. Across different types of conflicts, we found that negotiators were more willing and able to reach an agreement in the presence (在场) of a hostile mediator than in the presence of a nice one.
The main result of the test is not that hostility pays off. In fact, recent research has documented the social costs of negative behavior. For example, being the target of rude behavior reduces people’s performance on a variety of tasks. Other research shows the social benefits of positive behavior. People are more likely to close deals and become future business partners.
Even with the widespread social benefits of positive behavior and costs of negative behavior, hostility can pay off in certain situations.
4. What is the parents’ settlement of conflicts like in Paragraph 2
A. It’s calming and wise.
B. It’s arbitrary but effective.
C. It’s commonly adopted.
D. It harms family relationship.
5. How does the author support his viewpoints
A. By giving examples and experimenting.
B. By analyzing causes and effects.
C. By presenting facts.
D. By making comparison.
6. Which best describes the author’s attitude in the text
A. Concerned.
B. Doubtful.
C. Objective
D. Positive.
7. What could be the best title of the text
A. The Significance of Effective Mediation
B. The Costs of Negative Behavior
C. The Benefits of Positive Behavior
D. The Surprising Power of Hostility

Body language plays a big role in communication as it gives us messages about the other person that we can understand nonverbally, just basing the understanding on our feelings. There are four types of body language to be aware of.
Eye contact is one of the most direct and powerful facial expressions. Eyes are always talking. The use of eye contact varies significantly from culture to culture. In some regions, direct eye contact is often considered a sign of trustworthiness. So, if you’re in America, you should know soft, attentive eye contact would convey honesty. However, a hard, unblinking stare will send a very different message, similar to the meaning of direct eye contact in some regions.
Gestures can be used to emphasize certain meanings. Pressing fingers together to form a steeple (尖塔) shows interest and determination. Touching the nose or rubbing eyes indicates discomfort. A hand on the back of the neck may indicate you are not interested in a conversation.
Body posture can be positive or negative. A firm handshake will give the impression of honesty. Folding arms across your chest is protective. People with arms folded, legs crossed and bodies turning away reject messages. A head held straight up signals a neutral(中立的)attitude. A head sidewards indicates interest. A head down is negative.
The position of speakers and listeners; face-to-face, side-by-side or back-to-back, can send powerful messages. In a group, when the leader faces the group and turns toward the one who is speaking, this conveys strong attention. When two people are communicating, competitors more possibly sit facing each other while partners sit side-by-side.
8. Which of the following body language can mean or express honesty
A. A head sidewards or touching the nose.
B. Attentive eye contact or a firm handshake.
C. A firm handshake or folded arms across one’s chest.
D. Attentive eye contact or folded arms across one’s chest.
9. Which kind of gestures shows your discomfort in the conversation
A. Touching the nose or rubbing eyes.
B. Folding arms across your chest.
C. Putting a hand on the back of the neck.
D. Pressing fingers together to form a steeple.
10. Which of the following best explains the underlined word “reject” in Paragraph 4
A. Feel down.
B. Care for.
C. Turn down.
D. Agree with.
11. Which type of body language do the examples in Paragraph 5 belong to
A. Facial expressions.
B. Gestures.
C. Body posture.
D. Space relationships.
D
As a young boy, I knew what people said was not always what they meant or were feeling. And I knew it was possible to get others to do what I wanted if I read their real feelings and responded suitably to their needs. At the age of eleven, I sold sponge rubber(海绵橡胶) door to door after school and quickly worked out how to tell if someone was likely to buy. When I knocked on a door, if someone told me to go away but his hands were open and he showed his palms (the inside surfaces of his hands) , I knew it was safe to continue with my presentation because he was not angry or threatening although he may have a negative attitude. If someone told me to go away in a soft voice but used a pointed finger or closed hand, I knew it was time to leave.
As a teenager, I became a pots and pans (炊具) salesperson, and my ability to read people earned me enough money to buy my first house. Selling gave me the chance to meet people and study them closely and to know whether they would buy or not simply by watching their body language.
I joined the life insurance business at the age of twenty. And I went on to break several sales records in my company, becoming the youngest person to sell over a million dollars’ worth of business in my first year. This achievement allowed me to become a member of the well-known Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT, which recognizes the world’s top achievers in life insurance). I was lucky that the skills I’d learned as a boy in watching body language while selling pots and pans could be used in this new area, and were directly related to the success I could have in any business closely connected with people.
12. Which of the following meant the author must go away
A. A customer’s soft voice.
B. A customer’s pointed finger.
C. A customer’s open palms.
D. A customer’s dismissive expression.
13. What does the underlined phrase “new area” in the last paragraph refer to
A. The study of selling products.
B. The life insurance business.
C. The pots and pans industry.
D. The work for the MDRT.
14. What was the key to the author’s success
A. Listening to customers’ words.
B. Understanding customers’ habits.
C. Trying to satisfy customers’ needs.
D. Reading customers’ body language.
15. How does the text mainly develop
A. By following the order of time.
B. By giving clear explanations.
C. By giving well-known examples.
D. By following the order of importance.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Healthy eating is becoming more important than ever. Teaching your kids healthy eating habits is one of the most important things you can do for them as a parent. But while there’s no miracle tip that will make the difference between healthy children and obese or overweight children, there are some things you can do to instil (逐步培养) healthier eating habits in your kids.
Most parents and children claim that breakfast is part of their everyday routines. Children who eat breakfast have higher math grades, make improvement in reading scores and basically perform better in school. They also tend to have healthier bodies in general, with better-controlled weight levels.
When you take them to the grocery store with you, there is no doubt that your children will request the most sugar-filled, fat-injected products on the shelf. But these are not the ones to have in your home—and if possible, you should avoid purchasing them. Be sure your kids have healthy snacks. Yes, kids like white bread. But any kid can get used to the taste of whole grains. It just takes a little practice. Look for white bread, and add other whole grains into their diet. Start toasting their sandwiches. When they are toasted, it’ll be that much harder for them to tell the difference in taste.
One of the best things you can do to establish healthy eating habits in your kids is to have them yourself. When your children see you reaching for an apple instead of a bag of chips, they tend to do the same. Involve your kids in shopping for and cooking food. This will give you the chance to teach your kids about healthy choices and why they should make them. In short, you can tell your kids every day to eat healthy foods ... but if you don’t do the same thing yourself, the lesson will never stick.

第三部分 写作
第一节
One possible version
People usually communicate with others by spoken words. However body language is widely used in our daily life.
Have you ever used body language to communicate with others?I think the answer is definitely sure. You must have smiled to your friend when you meet him again after a long time. Smile is body language. And it is obvious that through human beings history, people used body language to communicate with others frequently. Such as when you find your friend is depressed, you give him a smile to cheer him up and at that moment the smile is better than any words,I think. When you are surrounded by noises, and you cannot make yourself understood by word of mouth, then you use gestures which are body language to express your ideas.
As a conclusion, body language is as important as spoken language.
