Step I 学习理解
活动一：识别主语从句（Part1，P53）
Look at the complex sentences below and state the functions of the noun clauses italicised. Then find similar complex sentences from the text.
·What Yuan Long ping really cared about was not money or celebrity.
·That Yuan Longping had realised his dream of seawater rice surprised the whole world.
·It surprised the whole world that Yuan Longping had realised his dream of developing seawater rice.

Match the sentence parts，and then translate the completed sentences into Chinese. Pay attention to how the subjects are introduced differently.

Read the passage and underline all the subject clauses. Then in pairs，discuss whether the sentences with subject clauses can be paraphrased.
Grandma has been complaining about the vegetables sold in the supermarket, which have been grown using chemical fertilisers. To her, that they look beautiful on the outside is obvious. However, what she is unhappy about is the lower nutritional value and reduced flavour. Now that both of my grandparents have retired from their jobs in the city, how they are going to spend their retirement is an important decision for them. Whether they can live a healthy life is the first thing they are considering. So they have made up their minds to move to the countryside, where they can live a green life.
Suggested answers：

2.It+be+名词十主语从句.（a pity，a fact，a mystery，a shame，an honour，a question，common knowledge…）
3.It+be+过去分词+主语从句.（announced，believed，expected，hoped，decided，reported，said，shown，well known，proved…）（此结构中的主语从句不可提前）
4.It十不及物动词十主语从句.（seem，appear，happened…）（此结构中的主语从句不可提前）
【设计意图】通过分析句子结构，判断出语篇中含有主语从句的句子，并让学生通过小组讨论的形式判断该主语从句是否可以转化为同义句。通过进一步练习，使学生明确主语从句的特征，了解为避免头重脚轻，常会以形式主语it引导从句，并灵活使用。

What impresses me most is that he refused his parents' suggestion to study science or medicine in a college and went to receive an education at Southwest Agricultural College in Chongqing. What makes him a great scientist is his determination to tackle the crisis of the poor harvests and starvation of farmers. It is important that he had a dream to develop high output rice—hybrid rice. Whether his dream would be accomplished depended on his intense effort to overcome all the difficulties during the research. It excited the whole world that he succeeded in finding the solution to boosting yield in the field. That his love and care for his people makes him beloved. That he is devoted to circulating his knowledge in Asia and many less developed countries to increase their harvests has been helping rid world hunger. That he never gives up and cares little about money and being famous are his most important qualities.
