Recently the “China dream” has been the subject of a public topic. Although it is quite common for Chinese people to dream of a powerful or a prosperous (繁荣的)China, most people also have their own dreams. Throughout China’s thousands of years of history, these “China dreams” have always existed. Do you have a “China dream” I brought up this topic with several young Chinese students with higher US educational backgrounds. Unsurprisingly, they all had their own heartfelt hopes and dreams for their native country.
Fred Wang, an MBA candidate in the US said, “I dream of the equal chance for the young in China. Equality means all young people can compete fairly, based on the rule of law no matter whether they are rich or poor.”
Yujie Zhao, another MBA candidate in California said, “I dream of a happy family with an affordable house. I dream of having the best education for my children so they will not lose at the starting line, and I dream of being able to take good care of my parents after they retire.” She said, “It seems like all my dreams are about family, but it is so true for most Chinese young dreamers today.”
Yiqiong Zhang, an MBA graduate from the US shared her dreams. “I have a dream which I have been holding for many years. That is after working hard for about 20 to 25 years, I can have enough money to build and manage a small bookstore or a flower shop. Besides working hard, I am able to enjoy life; to play the piano, to hike and to enjoy a two-month-long vacation every year. This may be a common dream among young Chinese students.”
There is no doubt that all of these young students have their own “China dreams”. They all love China, they all love chasing their dreams. The beautiful “China Dream” requires hard work. Everyone should work hard to make their dreams come true.
1. Which is right about the three young Chinese students

“Eat local.” It’s one way to reduce human effect on the planet. Eating local means to try to buy and consume foods that are grown in places close to home. However, most of the food sold at supermarkets is not locally grown or produced. Trucks and planes deliver these foods from hundreds or thousands of miles away. During the transportation, greenhouse(温室) gases are produced, causing global warming. So the shorter distance your foods must travel, the less harm they may do to the environment.
But how do you get local food if you live in a large city, hundreds of miles away from farms Environmental health scientist Dickson Despommier and his students came up with the idea of a “vertical(垂直的) farm”.
A vertical farm is a glass-walled structure that could be built as tall as a skyscraper (摩天大楼) . Since the garden is built upwards, rather than outwards, it requires much less space than an ordinary farm. The world is quickly running out of room for ordinary farming.
Vertical farms could be a key to this situation. Despommier imagines a 30-storey building with a greenhouse on every floor. The walls of the building would be clear to allow crops to get as much sunlight as possible. Depending on a city’s water resources, Despommier thinks hydroponic(水栽的) farming is another method for the vertical farm which needs no soil to grow plants.
Despommier says the hydroponic greenhouses would use a system that would use a city’s waste water and fill it with nutrition to make the crops grow. If this method works, it would provide food to a city and save millions of tons of water.
The idea of a vertical farm has attracted the attention of government officials around the world. Scott Stringer, a government official from New York City, thinks the city is suitable for the vertical farming. “Obviously we don’t have much land left for us,” Stringer said. “But the sky is the limit in Manhattan.”
Despommier admits that there is still a lot of work to do to make vertical farms a reality. “But I think vertical farming is an idea that can work in a big way,” he says.

A. people can make full use of vertical space of Manhattan
B. there is a limit for using empty land in Manhattan

7. What can we learn about the vertical farming in the passage
A. No soil is needed to grow plants on a vertical farm.
B. It has solved the problem of the food shortage in a big way.
C. The walls of the building would be clear to let people see the plants clearly.
D. Crops are mainly grown in the rainwater on a vertical farm.

Big changes in agriculture are taking place in Singapore. The small, Southeast Asian nation is leading a farming revolution, according to the Reuters.
Singapore covers about 720 square kilometres of land and only one percent of that land is used for agriculture. Food production costs are higher there than those in the rest of Southeast Asia. As climate change and population growth threaten the food supply, the pressure is on new farmers to answer the government’s call to “grow more with less”.
“Whenever I talk about food security in Singapore, I tell people not to think land—think space, because you can go upwards and sideways,” said Paul Teng, an agriculture professor at Nanyang Technological University.
There are more than 30 vertical farms in Singapore. Sustenir Agriculture is one of these businesses. Its hydroponic farm grows non-native foods like cherry tomatoes and strawberries inside buildings under artificial lighting. Then it sells the produce to local supermarkets and online stores. Sustenir raised $ 16 million from investors (last year. The money will be used to expand operations in Singapore.
However, not everyone thinks the new technology is best. Egg farmer William Ho said the government should not depend so much on agriculture technology businesses. “Many of them have failed. That’s why I’m always asking the government why you don’t invest in us old-timers. We are more practical,” he said. Professor Paul Teng said an issue for urban farmers is that the high cost of the technology makes their products too pricey for many people.
8. What does the second paragraph mainly discuss
A. High food production costs.
B. Reasons for changes in agriculture.
C. Agricultural technology businesses.
D. Sales expansion of food markets.
9. What is the way to achieve food security according to Paul Teng
A. Exploring space for land.
B. Buying more food.
C. Enlarging farmland.
D. Investing more money.

The extreme need for blood donors (捐赠者) may soon be eased as two teams of researchers take one step closer to being able to produce artificial blood in the lab, creating a limitless supply of blood. The two studies, both published in the journal Nature, are the result of nearly 20 years of research and experiments. Having a limitless blood supply could greatly help patients suffering from different blood disorders that require regular transfusions.
“People have been trying to do this for 20 years unsuccessfully,” said Cambridge University’s Dr Caroline Guibentif. “This is the first time ... they have got cells that can be selfrenewed and give rise to all sorts of blood cells, so of course it’s a big step towards the goal, but we are not quite there yet.”
In the first study, the researchers were able to turn stem cells (干细胞) into blood stem cells that have the ability to produce different types of human blood. On the other hand, the second team of researchers successfully turned adult cells from mice and turned them into blood stem cells. The result of the first study could greatly help patients with genetic blood disorders. Doctors could soon take cells from the patients, genetically correct its defect and make functional blood cells. Scientists could also take cells from universal donors to develop a limitless supply of blood stem cells and blood. Meanwhile, the success of the second study is to be achieved in clinical trials, and it could provide a way to treat different immune disorders.
Due to the relatively short lifespan of mouse models, the researchers did not detect any disadvantageous side effects of the artificial blood nor find any traces of cancer. The next step now is to try both methods in clinical trials. Despite the great success of the two studies, experts noted that it could possibly take years before the dream of having the limitless blood supply comes true.
12. What can we know about artificial blood
A. It can be used in medical treatment.
B. It will be sold at a low price.
C. It is easy to produce artificial blood.
D. It can cure blood disorders.
13. What does the underlined word “defect” mean in Paragraph 3
A. Origin.
B. Effect.
C. Advantage.
D. Fault.
14. What will the researchers do next with artificial blood produced
A. They will make such blood on a large scale.
B. They will carry on with clinical trials next.
C. They will use it to save so many patients.
D. They will make a study of immune disorders.
15. Which of the following is the suitable title for the passage
A. Genetic Blood Disorders
B. Worries About the Limited Blood
C. Scientists Help Produce Limitless Artificial Blood
D. Scientists Encourage People to Donate More Blood
