Chinese painting
Chinese paper cutting, or Jianzhi, is a kind of folk art which uses scissors or knives to cut paper for decoration or other folk activities.
Having a wide mass base in China, paper cutting has been involved in the social life for different peoples and has presented multiple social values in cognition, amusement and communication etc.
1. What do you know about these art forms
Chinese embroidery is one of Chinese excellent folk traditional needle craftworks. Embroidery is closely connected with China’s sericulture (养蚕) and filature (纺丝). Hence embroidery is also called silk needlework (sixiu). As the using of silk, silk articles appeared and developed, and the embroidery gradually sprung up.
Chinese Seal Cutting is the combination of calligraphy (mainly Seal Character) and engraving (including chisel and cast). It is an art to make seal and it is a unique art form of Chinese characters. So far, seal cutting has gone through 3700 years of long history and more than ten dynasties.
Calligraphy is a visual art related to writing. It is the design and execution of lettering with a broad tip instrument, dip pen, or brush, among other writing instruments. It implies a sure knowledge of the correct form of letters and the skill to make them harmoniously. It requires the experienced, knowledgeable eye to recognize them.
Traditional Chinese painting is similar to calligraphy - which itself is considered to be the highest form of painting - and is executed (作成,完成) with a brush dipped in black ink or colored ink. The most popular type of media is paper or silk, but some paintings are done on walls or lacquer (漆) work.
Porcelain, also called ‘fine china’, featuring its delicate texture, pleasing color, and refined sculpture, has been one of the earliest artworks, in the form of all kinds of items, such as bowls, cups, tea sets, vases, jewel cases etc.
2. Have you tried any of these art forms Share your experience with the class.

Contemporary art
Since it began in the late 20th century, the Contemporary Art Movement has raised questions and doubts, with people asking, “Is it really art ” This was the case in 1999 with British artist Tracey Emin’s work, My bed- which was, quite literally, her unmade bed.
Then, in 2015, cleaners in an Italian gallery threw away an art piece after mistaking the pile of empty bottles, cigarette ends and pieces of coloured paper for rubbish! While some say contemporary art lacks skill, meaning and artistic value, others argue that its worth lies in its ability to stimulate new discussions and understanding of everyday objects.
Listen to the conversation and choose the main idea.
1 Everyone can create art, whatever their background.
2 We can use art to learn about the world.
3 Art means different things to different people.
4 Everyone should try to include art in their lives.
Listen again and complete the table.
