Step I 学习理解
活动一:感知与注意
Brainstorm
1.Show some pictures about some famous scientists and ask students to recognize whom they are and what contributions they've made to society.
2. Ask students to answer the following questions:
·Who is your favourite scientist
·Can you use some adjectives to describe his/her personalities
【设计意图】通过图片和热身问题,引导学生对部分著名科学家进行识别并讨论其对社会的贡献,并用英语描述自已最喜欢的科学家,使学生提前进入话题,为接下来的文章阅读做好准备。
活动二:获取与梳理
Learn the texts
1.Let students read the two titles and try to predict what the texts are mainly about.
2.Read the texts and decide if the statements are true[T]or false[F].

Generalization
1.Find words that describe the personalities of the scientists.
Suggested answers:
Qian Xuesen:
a man with "great scientific thought and scientific spirit" who was patriotic and served his homeland with effort, achievement, and devotion; a pioneer; did not let that discourage him; determined; an outstanding and creative scientist; deep appreciation for art
Stephen Hawking:
brilliant; brave; sometimes careless in what he said or did; willing to say what others were afraid to say; dream of what others were afraid to dream about quite determined willing to admit his faults
2. How do the stories about the scientists help illustrate these personalities
Suggested answers:
In the case of Qian Xuesen, we see his determination illustrated by his struggles and how he overcame challenges. His story also shows he was patriotic and devoted to his career
In the case of Stephen Hawking, we also see his determination in the face of difficulty through the stories told about him We also see his audacity.
3.Conclusion:If you want to make people accept your description of somebody's personalities,you should give them details to support your idea,making it forceful.
【设计意图】通过找出文中描述两位科学家性格的词汇,让学生对两位科学家有进一步了解;通过讨论文中人物故事与性格描述之间有何联系,引导学生得出结论描述性格时须有例子作为支撑,为接下来的写作铺路。

Suggested answer:
Born in a poor family in Peking Union Medical College Hospital on September 7, 1930, Yuan Longping studied hard, showing great interest in agriculture.
As a matter of fact, since his graduation from university in 1953, Yuan had done research on rice for over half a century, devoting all his time and energy o the study of agriculture.
Because of his research, China's rice production is increasing rapidly, solving the problem of the lack of food for many countries. As a result, he was honoured as the" father of hybrid rice" and was rewarded with many prizes for his great contributions to the world Though he was famous, he lived a simple life and cared little about money and fame.
