They are not used to hear English at normal speed , with a heavy accent and many new idioms.
Try to immerse themselves in English before they go abroad; watch varieties of English programs and films without subtitles, listen to English songs and seize every opportunity to talk to native speakers.
Culture shock
The culture alien is quite different to their own.
Locals will be understanding the student is new to the country and will appreciate to learn and understand about their culture. It’s best to be kind, respectful and enthusiastic to try news things in a foreign country.
One possible version
Six months ago, Xie Lei went to England to learn about global business on a year-long exchange program. At first, she chose to live with a host family to adapt to a whole new life in a different country. She also found their academic requirements were quite different from that in China. With the help of her tutor, she got used to the study there. Now apart from learning about business, she has been involved in social activities, acting as a cultural messenger building a bridge between China and the UK.
