“My dear Mr. Bennet,” said his lady to him one day, “have you heard that Netherfield Park is let(出租) at last ”
Mr. Bennet replied that he had not.
“But it is,” returned she, “for Mrs. Long has just been here, and she told me all about it.”
Mr. Bennet made no answer.
“Do not you want to know who has taken it ” cried his wife impatiently.
“You want to tell me, and I have no objection(反对) to hearing it.”
This was invitation enough.
“Why, my dear, you must know, Mrs. Long says that Netherfield is taken by a young man of large fortune from the north of England; that he came down on Monday to see the place, and was so satisfied with it that he agreed immediately with Mr. Morris, the owner of Netherfield, and some of his servants are to be in the house by the end of next week.”
“What is his name ”
“Bingley.”
“Is he married or single ”
“Oh! Single, my dear, to be sure! A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls! It is probable that he may fall in love with one of them, and so you must visit him as soon as he comes.”
“I see no chance for that. You and the girls may go, or you may send them by themselves, which perhaps will be still better; for, as you are as handsome as any of them, Mr. Bingley might like you the best of all.”
“But, my dear, you must indeed go and see Mr. Bingley when he comes into the neighbourhood.”
“It is more than what I should do, honestly speaking.”
“But consider your daughters. Sir William and Lady Lucas have decided to go, for in general, you know they visit no new comers. Indeed you must go, for it will be impossible for us to visit him, if you do not.”
But in fact Mr. Bennet was among the earliest of those who waited to visit Mr. Bingley. He had always planned to visit him, though to the last always lying to his wife that he would not go.

Maybe you often have arguments with your parents about clothes, homework, friends and many other things. But what’s going on when your parents fight with each other Most teenagers feel sad or afraid when their parents fight. They might think their parents don’t love each other any more and that their arguments will lead to a divorce (导致离婚).
In fact, it is normal for parents to disagree and argue sometimes. They might disagree about important things like jobs and family decisions. They might even disagree about little things that don’t seem important at all—like what’s for dinner. Maybe sometimes parents feel so strongly about their differences that it may lead to arguments. However, these arguments are often over quickly. Parents may say sorry and make up, and the family returns to normal.
As a family member, you should find out what it really means when your parents fight. When your parents get angry with each other, they might say things they don’t really mean. Most people may lose their cool, so if your parents are fighting, don’t worry too much about it. Try to find a good way to solve it.
If your parents’ fighting really bothers you, you might find it hard to sleep or go to school. If this happens, try talking to your parents about their behavior. They may not even realize it until you tell them how their arguments has affected you. You can also tell other relatives, a teacher or a close friend.
Just remember that no family is perfect and arguments are common in every family.

About ten years ago, a young and very successful man named Jack was traveling down a New York neighborhood street. He was going a bit too fast in his black car, which was only two months old.
He was watching for kids running out from between the cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no children out, but a brick (砖块) flew out and—WHUMP—it broke into the shiny black side door. Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair He’s hurt and he’s too heavy for me.”

Dear Disney,
Last weekend, my family spent an enjoyable holiday at the Magic Kingdom—Disneyland. And one event made our visit seem truly magical.
We got to the front of the line at Space Mountain, only to find out that our little daughter Gloria couldn’t take her ice-cream on the ride. We were so excited that we all forgot ice-cream was not allowed on the ride.
Gloria began to cry and we all had no idea what to do. Then Murphy, one of your staff (员工) came over. She told Gloria that she would hold the ice-cream for her and give it to her when she finished the ride. Gloria said, “Promise ” Then she gave Murphy her ice-cream, and she completely enjoyed the ride.
Sure enough, as we walked out the exit (出口), there was Gloria’s new friend with “her” ice-cream. Now you and I both know what happened, because we know that an ice-cream won’t last twenty minutes on a summer afternoon in Florida. Murphy knew what time we would get off the ride, she went to the nearest shop and bought a new ice-cream thirty seconds before we walked out the exit. Gloria said, “Thank you”, but I’m sure she thought it was the same ice-cream.
We know that someone tried hard to make our visit special. Thanks so much for going above and beyond!
Your fan,
Carmen Rivera

Google and Toyota have worked together to create a new smart car. It can run on the road without a driver. It drives itself. The self-driving car hasn’t been on sale to the public, so we don’t know how much it costs. Another thing most people want to know is whether it will be safe enough to run on the road.
The self-driving car uses electricity as its power, and it can’t drive very quickly-the top speed would be 25 miles per hour. It is actually controlled by a computer system on the car. The system keeps on collecting information by some video cameras inside the car and a LIDAR sensor(激光雷达传感器)on top of it. A computer processes the information and decides what to do. “The self-driving car has only buttons for go and stop, so it’s very easy to use, ”an engineer of Google says. “And what’s more , it will make car accidents less and make the world a safer place.” The self-driving car has driven hundreds of thousands of miles in California, and it has only gotten into two accidents by human mistake.
According to CNN, self-driving cars will also help to reduce the number of cars in big cities. “Self-driving cars would be able to send you to the workplace and then pick up another person instead of stopping in a parking lot.”
25.According to CNN, self-driving cars will ________.
A.send us more quickly to the workplace B.lead to heavier traffic
C.improve traffic condition in big cities D.carry more people than a normal car

① Many people believe that toys are mainly made for kids. When we grow up, we should put away such childish things.
②But now many grown-ups are getting them out again.
③ According to data from the market research firm NPD Group, toys bought by people over the age of 12 account for 23 percent of the European market. Among them, adults are still the main force. In 2019, Beijing’s Toy Show attracted tens of thousands of visitors, including many grown-ups.
④But why are adults interested in these seemingly “childish” things
⑤Toys can “bring back happy childhood memories”, noted website SWNS Digital. Many adults are under a lot of pressure at home and at work. Items that they were familiar with in childhood can remind them of easier times.
⑥Rob Willner, 25, is one such person who finds solace in items from the past. At his home in London, he keeps two boxes of loose childhood Lego tucked away under a bed, as well as various large “sentimental” models on shelves in his house.
⑦When he comes home after a hard day, he often plays with the toys. “It reminds me of the playful side of life, but also helps me to keep perspective. Lego isn’t great, but it’s fun, and helps you to think about what’s really important,” he told The Telegraph.
⑧ There is another reason for the rise in popularity of toys among adults. This pastime offers pressure-free creativity. Even hobbies such as baking and painting can be shadowed by the worry that the results will fail to please other people. Dressing up a doll or playing with a model train set doesn’t come with a lot of pressure to please others.
⑨ It seems that adults are no longer taking their childhood freedom for granted. After all, just as UK artist David Hockney said, “Play is serious.”
28.Why are toys popular among adults according to website SWNS Digital
A.They don’t want to grow up at all.
B.Playing helps develop and improve social sill.
C.They want to get along well with their kids.
D.Toys can bring back positive memories.
29.How does Rob Willner benefit from playing with toys after work
A.It makes him more creative at work.
B.It helps him realize important things in life.
C.It makes him think more about the past.
D.It helps him connect with other people.
30.What does Paragraph 8 mainly talk about
A.The rising pressure to please others that adults face.
B.How playing with toys can increase creativity at work.
C.Another reason why adults love to play with toys.
D.The reason why young people don’t cook nowadays.
31.The best title for the passage may be ________.
A.Remaining a Kid at Heart B.Let’s Put Away Childish Toys
C.How to Go Back to Childhood D.Adults Are Under Lots of Pressure
When I was a boy, my family would sometimes gather together at my great aunt’s tiny house over the summer. Relatives from all over the country would come to visit.
The adults would crowd together in the living room, around the kitchen table and on the front porch(门廊) to talk and catch up on each other’s lives. All of us kids would be sent out onto the front yard to play.
Those were the days before video games and smart phones, so we often ended up playing a good old-fashioned game of tag(捉人). I remember one of those times especially I was the youngest and smallest of all the kids there, so I got caught first and couldn’t catch anyone else. Although I tried my best to chase after my brothers and cousins, they were all too fast for me. I grew more and more frustrated.
I finally lunged(猛扑) at one of my brothers and fell face first into the dirt. I got up with tears in my eyes. Then I saw one of my cousins standing there. She started to run but ran much more slowly than before. I easily caught up and tagged her. Then she turned to me, smiled and said, “I’m it! You’d better run!” I ran off laughing with joy while she turned and started to chase one of my older brothers.
I see now how her act of kindness that day saved me from sadness and returned me to joy. It didn’t matter that we hardly ever saw each other. We were family and she loved me. We are all one, we all belong to each other and we are one big beautiful family.
32.The underlined word “Those” in Paragraph 3 refers to “________”.
A.the days when the writer was a boy B.the family members who got together
C.the topics adults talked about D.the places which the kids were sent to
33.Why did the cousin run much more slowly than before
A.To make fun of the writer. B.To let the writer catch her.
C.To lead the writer to fall over again. D.To help the writer catch others.
