When kids pretend (扮演) they’re princesses or super heroes, or create their own characters using dolls or Lego figures, it seems like they’re playing simple games. But what’s going on when kids use their imaginations and pretend when they play is actually very complex, and very good for kids’ development.
The power of kids’ imaginations is a fantastic thing. All they need is some time, space, and your encouragement, and they can be anything and go anywhere, just by pretending. They make up stories and adventures and create whole worlds without even thinking about it—this is creativity in its purest (纯粹的) form.
Pretend play allows kids to think about what they experience in the world around them and re-create social relationships through play. Kids make sense of the world and copy the social interactions they see around them through imaginative play with friends, siblings, parents, and even stuffed animals. Kids will share with a teddy bear, give them a check-up, praise them for sharing, or make them some tea at a tea party. It’s not only adorable, but it’s a great way for kids to put into practice the interpersonal skills.
It encourages cooperation (合作) and problem solving. If your children and their friends want to be the same princess when they play, they may decide to take turns. Or your children may learn to play a game their older brother wants to play in exchange for a promise that they’ll play their game the next time.
When putting the suggestions below into practice, it can help to encourage pretend play.
Let kids play alone. When kids play alone, they can create their own games and let their imaginations lead them.
Let them lead. When you pretend-play with kids, try not to guide them. If they ask you for help or for ideas, you can suggest prompts (提示). But as a general rule, let your child take the lead and figure out what and how you’ll play.
Encourage them when they don’t follow instructions and use toys in new and creative ways. Sure, it’s fun to build the truck or building according to the instruction manual that comes with the Lego. But it’s great when kids decide to mix and match parts from different sets to create their own designs. Let your child know you love their creations and ideas.

Two Words that Changed Many Lives
Often when we’re going through a hard time, we feel alone, and just having someone notice and understand is enough to make us feel loved and supported. Sherry was once upset and disappointed while working on a hard job. Then her boss gave her a card. The card with just two little words was what made her realize she wasn’t alone.
The two words
You Matter.
Sherry said she almost cried when she read the message. “I’ve fought at times with my own self-worth, and when I received the card, it felt like a question I carried around with me had been answered—I matter.”
Sherry was so touched that she ordered 100 of her own cards to give away.
“I met a woman who looked to be in her 60s. When I asked her how she was doing, the woman said, ‘Not so good. My husband just lost his job. The truth is, I don’t know how I’m going to get through the holidays.’ My heart ached, I wanted to help but didn’t know how. Then I remembered something in my hag that might help her.’ It sounds like you’re going through a really hard time. I’d like to give you something.” And I handed her a “You Matter” card. When she read it, she began to cry.” You have no idea how much this means to me, “she said thankfully.”
“Without that card, I wouldn’t have gone up to that woman and said anything,” she says. Sherry thought the experience was so powerful that she decided to send sets of 30 “You Matter” cards free to anyone who signed up online as long as the person promised to give the cards away. She called the event the “You Matter Marathon(马拉松)” because the cards can pass on people’s kindness and care about each other.
The idea was more successful than she’d expected and the cards have changed many people’s lives. Julie, a participant(参与者), says, “Having the ‘You Mater’ cards ready to hand out has allowed me to really look at people. This is making me a much more connected human.”

After school, it’s very difficult for Vishal Singh to make a choice. He knows he should really go on with his homework, but the Internet is so attractive that he can’t really pay much attention to his study.
“Students have always faced distractions(分心) and time-wasters,” writes Matt Richtel in the New York Times. He says that computers are a real challenge for students. They need to pay more attention to their learning.
Students say that their parents are worried about the distractions and try to control their computer time. But it is still difficult to manage the time of using computers.
Teachers at Woodside commonly think technology makes students difficult to concentrate(集中精力) in class, but they are divided over whether computer and the Internet are the solutions.
In Richtel’s article, English teacher Marcia Blondel feels disappointed with her students. She isn’t able to get them to read 30 pages of a book for homework. In order to solve this problem, she asks them to take part in a read-aloud of the book in class.
But as some teachers express their worries over students’ digital diets, seeing it as a way, they are trying to use technology in the classroom to draw the attention of these 21st-century students. The headmaster of Woodside High School, David Reilly, asks teachers to build websites to communicate with students. The students are allowed to use computers., smart phones or other new technology to interact(互动) with their teachers. It’s convenient for them to search for some useful materials that they need before class. With the help of the new technology, the students have more chances to share their ideas with each other and spend less time on video games. So, they pay more attention to their study and they don’t show up with bleary-eyes(睡眼朦胧的) any more. Mr. Reilly also spends a large amount of money building up a multimedia(多媒体) centre and introduce new courses like the digital audio recording(数码录像) class.
“We try our best to take back their attention and make them concentrate on their study,” he says. “To a degree, we’re using technology to do it.”
Some schools are looking to use the Internet to encourage students to study.

How to Spend Your Weekend Alone Without Losing It
There can be many, many stories behind weekends spent alone.
In the 4 years that I’ve been living on my own now, I’ve achieved the feat(壮举) of spending 208 weekends alone.
Based on(基于) this mind-blowing success, here’s a practical guide so that you, too, can spend your weekends, alone.
1.Go to a Free Gig(演出)
Coffee shops, libraries and local places often host free gigs, so see if there is anything going on in your area this weekend. Concerts can actually be much more rewarding(有意义的) when you go alone.
2.Go on a Long Walk
Going for a long walk and experiencing nature is often more enjoyable if you are alone, as it is peaceful, quiet, and relaxing.
You can stop to appreciate every beautiful flower you pass, and hear all of the quiet, busy sounds of nature.
3.Order Your Favourite Take Out Food
Get the menu and order your favourite take-away. As you don’t have to share it with anyone else, you can order as much food as you want.
4.Take a Shopping Trip Alone
Bring down any shopping stress by taking the trip alone. Other people can slow you down or make you hurry up, and you can end up missing out on the best clothes.
Take a relaxing trip alone and take your time trying everything on: you are likely to have a great day and find something you love.
5.Watch a TV Show You Love
The best part about watching television alone is that you can watch whatever you want. Put on your comfortable clothes, get some food and put your feet up for hours of watching.

Why do you feel encouraged when your teacher gives you a smile How do you know your mother is angry when she frowns(皱眉) In both cases, the person is telling us something not with words, but with facial expressions.
Facial expressions are one or more movements on a person’s face, such as frowning, raising one’s eyebrows(眉毛), and nose and lip(嘴唇)movements. They express people’s feelings.
Scientists at Oxford University have shown that humans have 80 muscles(肌肉)on their faces. These muscles can create more than 7,000 facial expressions. However, there are six main kinds of facial expressions that are common in all cultures: happiness, sadness, surprise, fear, anger and disgust(厌恶).
Facial expressions are very important to communication. One study at UCLA, in the US, showed that in most conversations, over 93 percent of the communicating is done without speaking.
If people can read facial expressions, they may be better at knowing what other people are feeling, so they can understand them better. Someone who does not enjoy a certain type of food usually will make a face when he/she sees or tastes it. A frown means worry or anger. Raised eyebrows and open eyes show surprise.
However, there are some taboos(禁忌)for reading people’s facial expressions.
For example, it is not a good idea to stare at someone for a long time while reading his or her facial expressions. They may think you are rude.

Today, many children spend a lot of their free time playing games on the Internet. In the UK, 99% of kids aged 8 to 15 play video games. They spend almost 14 hours gaming a week. This information tells us that the benefits and dangers of video games must be carefully considered.
For many people, video games are fun. They have bright lights, funny cartoons and exciting stories. Everywhere you look, you can see children playing these games. They play on buses and trains, in restaurants and even at school.
Video games are educational too. They make kids think in a creative way and they have to move their hands and eyes quickly. This can improve the way that a child’s brain works. What’s more, video games make children use their imagination. The player has to do many creative things, like drawing, telling stories and building things. Video games are also good for children to learn about technology because they can learn how computers and other devices work while they play.
However, a recent study suggests that video games can also be bad for children. First, children can download many games for free. This means that parents often don’t know if their children are playing violent(暴力的)or scary(恐怖的)games. Second, many children spend too much time playing games on computers and this can lead to health problems. Third, if children spend too much time playing games instead of doing homework, they can have problems at school and get bad grades. Finally, video games can affect children’s social skills. If children spend too much time playing video games by themselves, they might not learn how to play with their friends.
In conclusion, it seems clear that video games have some advantages and some disadvantages. It is up to parents to know what games their children are playing and how much time they spend on them. Parents should also make sure their children get enough exercise and spend time with other children.

Father of hybrid rice—Yuan Longping
Yuan Longping is China’s “Father of hybrid rice (杂交水稻之父)”. This November, he and his team set a new record. They grew a new kind of hybrid rice called “Sanyou No 1”. Its yield (产量) can reach 1,500 kg per mu. That means a 1-mu field can feed five people!
Yuan is 90 years old in 2020. When he was young, he saw lots of Chinese people starving (挨饿). He has tried hard to make sure everyone has enough to eat. To get closer to this goal, he grew hybrid rice.
Hybrid rice is very important for China. About one-fifth of the world’s people live in China. But China only has less than 9 percent of the world’s land. So the rice grown in China has to have a big yield. It has to have more grains (稻粒) in each plant. Its grains have to be bigger. It has to be strong so we can grow it in deserts, mountains, and snowy villages.
Hybrid rice can take in water and nutrition (营养) from the ground better than other rice. It can take in sunlight better as well. All of these things help it grow bigger and taller. Its annual yield (年产量) is about 20 percent higher than that of other rice.
“I had a dream. In my dream, rice plants grow as tall as sorghum (高粱), each ear of rice (稻穗) is as big as a broom, and each grain of rice is as huge as a peanut,” Yuan once said. Isn’t that wonderful Maybe the scientist’s dream will come true someday.
Rice in the desert
Hybrid rice can grow in different places and kinds of weather. Believe it or not, it can even grow in the desert.
In 2018, Yuan’s team brought some hybrid rice plants to Dubai (迪拜). Dubai is sandy and windy. The water there is salty. In daytime, the temperature (温度) can reach 50 ℃. But it falls to 20 ℃ at mon rice can’t grow there. But hybrid rice can. The Dubai hybrid rice had a yield of 500 kg per mu. The desert could be turned into a rice field!
Hybrid rice can grow in Tibet, too. It is the “roof of the world (世界屋脊)”. It’s high and cold.
“Father of hybrid rice” Yuan Longping passed away at 13:07 pm in Changsha of Hunan province. He has helped save not only China but also the world from starvation. When hundreds and thousands of people around the world were suffering from hunger, the hybrid rice was grown on a large scale in other countries, raising output and helping pull them out of hunger. He is a hero.

The Value of Labor
Can you cook If so, what are your special dishes
For middle and primary school students, being able to cook will become a must in the near future. They will also need to learn how to plant vegetables, repair home electric products, raise animals at home according to the new curriculum standard(课程标准)for labor(劳动)education.
Starting from this autumn term, students in primary and middle schools need to take courses on labor skills at least once a week. The labor courses have three types of labor tasks. The first type is everyday chores. It includes cleaning, organizing, cooking, and using or repairing home electric products. The second type is productive labor. It includes making traditional handicrafts(手工艺), and using new technologies such as 3D printing and laser(激光)cutting. The third type is service work. It includes volunteer work in the communities.
The new curriculum also calls for the build of a labor week every school year. Schools should arrange(安排)a week of off-campus activities. The labor education must be strengthened(加强)to help students develop an interest in labor and form a strong social responsibility(责任).
Recently, internet users have discussed the changes online. Many welcome such courses and say it is necessary to teach young students basic life skills. Some have regretted not learning such skills during their own school days.
Liu Fang, a mother of 6-year-old twins in Beijing, is a strong supporter of labor education. For the past year, she has trained her daughters to do house chores and make simple dishes for the family.
“The main idea is to let them share responsibilities as family members and become independent as early as they can.” said Liu, “Through doing housework, their hand-eye coordination(协调), time management and organization skills can be trained and it’s also good to help them relax. My twins have fun in doing chores and are more independent.”

The circle of life was on live display with the help of some children and young turtles (海龟) in the American state of New Jersey.
Last Sunday, some young children returned 17 young turtles to the wild in the coastal wetlands of a town called Stone Harbor. They set up a program to save the eggs and baby turtles. The program helps 150 to 200 turtles go back into the wild each year.
The turtles had been found as eggs and their mothers were killed by cars travelling through the road. People have saved thousands of turtles and returned them to the wild over the past 25 years. The turtles were either raised from eggs or were rescued from roads or other dangerous places over the years.
“It is a great community connection,” said Lisa Ferguson who is the director of the program. Local schools and many volunteers join this program. They start the program to save the baby turtles and they also want to show that everyone has a part to play, from adults down to kindergarten students.
The turtle release (放生) took place during a busy day of turtle activity. June is egg-laying season and turtles come out onto dry land to lay their eggs. The open area is far more dangerous for the turtles.
“We lose 550 turtles each year to road kills.” Ferguson said.
People in this program care for injured turtles. They also collect eggs from those killed on the road. Experts at the organization incubate (孵化) the eggs at 30 degrees Celsius. This ensures they will develop into turtles. They care for the turtles in the first year of their lives. When they have grown enough in the first year, they are set back into the wetlands nearby. Kindergarteners from Stone Harbor schools get to know the turtles from their start in their shells. The young students name the turtles and draw pictures of them. They raise money for turtle care through the sale of tasty treats.
Then it comes time to set the beloved turtles free to seek their future. Some children quickly and happily picked up the turtles and took them to the water. Every child seemed very pleased as the turtles made their away into the water.

Panda Life in the US
Pandas are not just a national treasure in China, but beloved around the world.
On March 16, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, DC, started a six-month celebration. This year is the 50th anniversary of the arrival of two giant pandas.
The first pandas from China in the US, Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing arrived at the zoo on April 16, 1972. In that year, China and the US established diplomatic (建立外交的) relations. China gifted the US these two pandas to show our goodwill. Over the past 50 years, eight pandas have lived at the zoo.
From meals to daily fun, the zoo teams have found ways to take care of the giant pandas. A food team grows the animals’ favorite food—bamboo—in the zoo. Working with local landowners, it also harvests (收割) bamboo from 20 stands across Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia. Sometimes, the team receives donations from the public. Besides bamboo, the pandas receive apples, sweet potatoes and honey water. Sweet potatoes are a favorite.
The team also sets up fun activities and toys, which help the pandas stay active and smart. For example, there are puzzle feeders. Pandas have to take food out of the feeders by spinning (旋转) or twisting (弯曲) them. Pandas can paint with the zookeepers, too.
Behind the protection work is a close partnership with panda experts (专家) in China. Usually, the zookeepers and Chinese panda experts visit each other several times a year to share knowledge about the animals. During the pandemic, they have communicated through emails and video calls. It has been an unbelievable experience for Brandie Smith, director of the z00, to work with Chinese experts.
“After 50 years, giant pandas remain an iconic species (标志性的物种) for our zoo,” said Smith. She hopes the program will continue at least 50 more years.
