一、阅读理解
第一节
阅读下列短文, 从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中, 选出最佳选项。
A
Polar bears may appear to be all soft and lovable, but they are the largest of their species, not to mention the world’s largest land meat-eating animals and therefore, they,re extremely dangerous. But don’t mention that to the Canadian animal trainer Mark Dumas, whose best pal happens to be a big snow-white polar bear Agee. Mark and Agee’s unusual friendship began when the bear was just six weeks old. He got her from a zoo and brought her home where she was bottle-fed and allowed to play with his other normal pets until she became an adolescent.
While Agee may not live at home anymore, the bond between her and Mark has never disappeared. Even as the baby has grown into a 16-year-old 800-pound adult, the two have continued to be wrestling together——something Mark realizes could be dangerous if Agee turns aggressive. However, the trainer who has been working with bears for over 40 years says he is able to read their body language and knows when to back off.
In addition to being Mark’s buddy(月月友),Agee is also the world’s first trained famous polar bear, appearing in films like Alaska and a number of television advertisements.
In the wild, polar bears can largely be found along the shores and on sea ice in the freezing Arctic region. They can weigh between 500 -- 1,500 pounds, feeding largely on seals.
Unfortunately,as is the case with many animal species, the melting ice caused by global warming is seriously affecting the population of these bears. That’s because during the summer months when they are most active, they rely on sea ice as their habitat for hunting. As the ice continues to melt, the mammals have to walk longer distances to find suitable homes, which takes away from their time to find a meal. The loss of ice is also affecting the population of their primary source of food—seals. Hopefully,we can find a way to prevent the bears from disappearing altogether.
1. What does the underlined word “that” refer to
A. Polar bears seem to be friendly.
B. Polar bears are in fact dangerous.
C. Polar bears are the largest bears.
D. Polar bears are human-eating animals.
2. How does Mark know Agee could be dangerous
A. By playing with her together.
B. By trying wrestling with her.
C. By observing her body language.
D. By taking her to swim.
3. What is mainly discussed in the last paragraph
A. The threat polar bears are facing.
B. The food polar bears live on.
C. The effect polar bears have on sea ice.
D. The place polar bears are living in.
B
The US Thanksgiving holiday is symbolised (象征)by its traditional food roast turkey. But the turkey is certainly not from Turkey. In fact, its English name is based on one big mistake. We could say it is a case of mistaken identity. The word “turkey” has meant “the land of the Turks” since ancient times. In the mid-1500s,the word “turkey” was first used to refer to the bird in the English language.
The misunderstanding over the word happened because of two similar-looking kinds of birds.
There is an African bird called the guinea fowl (珍珠鸡). It has dark feathers with white spots and a patch of brown on the back of its neck. Traders brought the guinea fowl to Europe through North Africa. This foreign bird came to Europe through Turkish lands. So, the English thought of the bird as a “Turkish chicken”.
When Europeans came to North America, they saw a bird that looked like the guinea fowl. This bird was native to the North American continent. But they thought that it was the guinea fowl, which, at that time, was called the “turkey cock”, so they gave it the same name.
Hundreds of years later, we continue to call this North American bird “turkey”,even though it has no connection at all with the country Turkey, or even with Europe.
But English is not the only language with interesting names for this North American bird.
The Turkish people call turkey “hindi” the Turkish name for India. The reference (涉及)to India probably comes from the old, wrong idea that the New World was in Eastern Asia.
The French call it “dinde”,a name that also connects the bird to India. “Dinde” means “from India” in the French language. “ Turkey ” has similar names in several other languages.
4. What can we know from Paragraph 1
A. The word “turkey” appeared in modern times.
B. Turkey’s English name is based on a correct identity.
C. Americans like eating turkey on Thanksgiving Day.
D. Both Turkey and “turkey,,have similar meanings in English.
5. Where did the guinea fowl come from
A. Europe.
B. Africa.
C. America.
D. Asia.
6. What does the underlined word “it” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Eastern Asia.
B. The French language.
C. The New World.
D. The bird turkey.
7. What would be the best title for the passage
A. How Did Thanksgiving “Turkey” Get Its Name
B. How Did Americans Spend Their Thanksgiving Holiday
C. Why Were Guinea Fowls So Popular with Americans
D. Why Were Guinea Fowls Different from American Turkeys
C
This week, at the Girls’ Schools Association annual conference,Professor Byron made a speech. She said,“Some families adopted a ‘ spreadsheet approach’ to raising children with their school life and career path mapped out for them from the start, and it’s really a problem. ”
A fortnight ago I was in Birmingham at the Skills Show, where the general idea was that parents have to be involved in their children’s educational lives. And it’s true: parents are, more often than not,the people that know young people the best as they are growing up. Sure, this doesn’t apply to every single child, but, for most, parents will be a yardstick(评判尺度)for their ambitions and those with whom they talk over dinner. Whatever kind of school you go to,parents make a big difference. The school and teaching do as well but I believe a lot is down to parenting.
Your son could attend any number of good independent boys’ schools but do badly in his A-levels. It’s not so much to do with the teaching as how much,as a parent, you care about your child’s education. A school could have the best teachers in the world, but if there is little in the way of parental support, the child will have a harder time. My most successful classmates are those with encouraging parents : parents that stood on football pitches on cold Saturday mornings, or those that gave up their time to help their children with homework.
When I explained to my parents, aged 13,that it wasn’t actually medicine that I wanted to study, but writing,my parents could have laughed at me,but they didn’t. They said,“ OK, what do you need us to do ” and they helped me when and where they could. That is the kind of “spreadsheet approach” that every child needs.

A. The type of school.

A. Making friends with children.
B. Laughing with children as much as possible.

Teens and younger children are reading a lot less for fun, according to a Common Sense Media report published on Monday.
While the decline over the past decade is steep for teen readers, some data in the report shows that reading remains a big part of many children’s lives, and indicates how parents might help encourage more reading.
According to the report’s key findings,“ the proportion (比 例)who say they ‘hardly ever’ read for fun has gone from 8 percent of 13-year-olds and 9 percent of 17-year-olds in 1984 to 22 percent and 27 percent respectively today. ”
The report data shows that pleasure reading levels for younger children, ages 2-8,remain largely the same. But the amount of time spent in reading each session has declined, from closer to an hour or more to closer to a half hour per session.
When it comes to technology and reading, the report does little to counsel (建议)parents looking for data about the effect of e-readers and tablets on reading. It does point out that many parents still limit electronic reading, mainly due to concerns about increased screen time.
The most hopeful data shared in the report shows clear evidence of parents serving as examples and important guides for their kids when it comes to reading. Data shows that kids and teens who do read frequently, compared to those who do not, have more books in the home, more books purchased for them, parents who read more often, and parents who set aside time for them to read. As the end of school approaches, and school vacation reading lists loom(逼近)ahead, parents might take this chance to step in and make their own summer reading list and plan a family trip to the library or bookstore.
12. What is the Common Sense Media report probably about
A. Children’s reading habits.
B. Quality of children’s books.
C. Children’s after-class activities.
D. Parent-child relationships.
13. Where can you find the data that best supports “children are reading a lot less for fun” ?
A. In Paragraph 2.
B. In Paragraph 3.
C. In Paragraph 4.
D. In Paragraph 5.
14. Why do many parents limit electronic reading
A. E-books are of poor quality.
B. It could be a waste of time.
C. It may harm children’s health.
D. E-readers are expensive.
15. How should parents encourage their children to read more
A. Act as role models for them.
B. Ask them to write book reports.
C. Set up reading groups for them.
D. Talk with their reading class teachers.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两 段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
We have a pit bull(比特犬).We found him a few weeks ago, walking along the road in a rural area. He jumping on cars, we thought maybe his family was camping somewhere nearby,so we passed him by. A few hours later, on our return trip,he was still in the same place, again, trying to get folks to stop for him. When he saw us, he laid down in the middle of the road, so we were unable to get around him.
We stopped the car and looked around for a few minutes, trying to figure out if anyone was around from whom he was separated. It didn’t appear so. Then, we took a good look at the dog. He had no collar and he was really thin. We decided he was abandoned.
My husband said,“If he doesn’t bite me when I try to pick him up to put him in the car, then we have a new dog.” The dog happily joined us with no fight at all. The only thing we were in danger of was getting licked to death. He kept sticking his head between the two front seats and thanking us for picking him up.
The dog was clearly on the road for some time. He was extremely underweight. He was covered in scars and new wounds. We have guessed that some of the scars were from when he was on the road. We thought of possible fights with coyotes, but he also looked as though he was used to fighting other dogs. We figured his incredibly sweet personality was the reason he was abandoned. He can’t have been a good fighting dog.
Therefore,we fed him a lot over the course of the next two weeks and he gained over twenty pounds.

第一节
One possible version:
Dear Tom,
Glad to hear from you. The activity launched by my school is “ Give up junk food, adopt a healthy diet”. Yd like to introduce it in details.
The activity started last week and will last for a month, aiming to reduce the extra calories we take in and develop a healthy eating habit, which is fundamental and crucial to our health. The activity consists of several aspects. Students are encouraged to eat in the canteen and eat more healthy food like onions, cabbages, bean curd, pork and so on. Besides, our school calls on us to give up junk food like dessert because it
provides too many calories.
Personally, I can’t agree more with it. Without a healthy diet, we can’t have a healthy body.
Looking forward to your reply.

One possible version:
Paragraph 1
We took him to the vet, who said the dog appears to be in good health, despite his having been abandoned. He figured out the dog is about two or three years of age from the condition of his teeth. Then the vet gave him all the required shots and applied some medicine to the scars and new wounds. About a month later, the dog changed into a strong and lovely one. He is both sweet and gentle.
Paragraph 2
Now we all love the dog very much. He once helped save me from trouble. One day my husband went to work in a hurry, forgetting to turn off the gas. I was sleeping soundly when I heard the dog barking like crazy. I was woken up, realising something unusual must have happened in our house. It turned out that the house was filled with gas, which made me in danger. I owed it to the dog that I avoided a disaster. The pit bull has become a member of our family.
